Feliz Cumpleaños A Mí, And All That Jazz

Sunday was my birthday (mi cumpleaños). And a fine birthday it turned out to be.

BIRTHDAY DESSERT #1.

The day started off sunny but the fog rolled in with a vengeance while we were enjoying our morning coffee at Cafe Manila. Very unusual. By mid-afternoon, the sun had returned.

11 A.M.
4 P.M.

I received lots of attention throughout the day — because wherever I went, San Geraldo said, “It’s his birthday!” I heard lots of singing — some of it good. I received emails and text messages. And birthday kisses (more, please). We had sandwiches at home for lunch with a special birthday dessert of pastries filled with chocolate cream (and garnished with fresh cherries).

We went to dinner at “The Sandpiper,” a wonderful restaurant along the beach with a very eclectic and international menu (and staff). Slushie’s husband is a chef there (click for a refresher course on Slushie). When San Geraldo told the hostess/server it was my birthday, she gave me four kisses — two on each cheek. She said it was the French way. After dinner, they surprised me with a piece of chocolate cake with a candle. And just about everyone at the restaurant sang “happy birthday.” To make things even better, musicians were setting up on the street just as we got seated. We recognized one as Javi Rosso, the great guitar player we had met at Cafe Manila some months ago (click here for that post). His sax-playing partner was with him this time. I’m sure they (the Rosso – Tomaselli Duo) were back in town because they knew it was my birthday. What a gift! Then, when we got home, San Geraldo served up two helpings of his delicious freshly baked apricot cobbler. Now it’s time for a tapas lunch at Bar Pepe, after which we’ll come home for more apricot cobbler. (Then maybe I should go for a loooooong walk.)

AT THE SANDPIPER. SAN GERALDO (WITH A LARGE GIN & TONIC!!!) BEFORE WE MOVED OUTSIDE.
¡SALUD Y GRACIAS!
BIRTHDAY DESSERT #2.
BIRTHDAY DESSERT #3. AND THERE’S LOTS MORE WHERE THAT CAME FROM!

ROSSO – TOMASELLI DUO.
I MADE A VIDEO ON THE STREET LAST NIGHT, BUT IT DOESN’T DO THEM JUSTICE.

  1. You sure know how to celebrate your birthday properly! I always enjoy your photos but LOVE seeing you and Jerry again! Happy Birtdhay (one day late) and mucho abrazos y besos

    1. Sharon:
Abrazos y besos atras! I thought it was about time to include a couple of photos of us. It might be time to update my profile pic; the facial hair has "lightened."

  2. p.s. Did they sing Happy Birthday to you in English, or was it some HB song that is sung in Spanish? In France, they tend to use the English-language 'apppy birrrsssday dooo yooooo" 🙂

    1. Judeet:
I added another dessert to the extended birthday celebration, so they would equal those kisses. Happy birthday was sung in American, English (British), and Spanglish and there was also a special Spanish birthday song. It's all been covered.

  3. OMG, that apricot cobbler made my mouth water! I must say that you are looking wonderful. Maybe having that "upper" of a day was just what you needed!

    1. Ms. Sparrow:
The apricot cobbler WAS wonderful. San Geraldo is a magician. He started with fresh apricots, flour, and things, and that's what resulted. And thanks for the compliment!

  4. If I had your phone number, I would have called you and sung to you "Las mañanitas" well, here it goes: Estas son las mañanitas que cantaba el rey David y por ser dia de tu santo, te las canamos a tí…despierta niño despierta, mira que ya amaneció, ya los pajarillos cantan, la luna ya se perdió
    Feliz cumpleaños atrasado

    saludos,
    raulito

  5. Feliz Cumpleaños from me too!
It looks as though you had a fab day which is what a birthday should be!
The apricot cobbler looks delicious. Did it have almonds with it?
