Feliz Cumpleaños A Mí, And All That Jazz
Sunday was my birthday (mi cumpleaños). And a fine birthday it turned out to be.
BIRTHDAY DESSERT #1.
The day started off sunny but the fog rolled in with a vengeance while we were enjoying our morning coffee at Cafe Manila. Very unusual. By mid-afternoon, the sun had returned.
11 A.M.
4 P.M.
I received lots of attention throughout the day — because wherever I went, San Geraldo said, “It’s his birthday!” I heard lots of singing — some of it good. I received emails and text messages. And birthday kisses (more, please). We had sandwiches at home for lunch with a special birthday dessert of pastries filled with chocolate cream (and garnished with fresh cherries).

We went to dinner at “The Sandpiper,” a wonderful restaurant along the beach with a very eclectic and international menu (and staff). Slushie’s husband is a chef there (click for a refresher course on Slushie). When San Geraldo told the hostess/server it was my birthday, she gave me four kisses — two on each cheek. She said it was the French way. After dinner, they surprised me with a piece of chocolate cake with a candle. And just about everyone at the restaurant sang “happy birthday.” To make things even better, musicians were setting up on the street just as we got seated. We recognized one as Javi Rosso, the great guitar player we had met at Cafe Manila some months ago (click here for that post). His sax-playing partner was with him this time. I’m sure they (the Rosso – Tomaselli Duo) were back in town because they knew it was my birthday. What a gift! Then, when we got home, San Geraldo served up two helpings of his delicious freshly baked apricot cobbler. Now it’s time for a tapas lunch at Bar Pepe, after which we’ll come home for more apricot cobbler. (Then maybe I should go for a loooooong walk.)
AT THE SANDPIPER. SAN GERALDO (WITH A LARGE GIN & TONIC!!!) BEFORE WE MOVED OUTSIDE.
¡SALUD Y GRACIAS!
BIRTHDAY DESSERT #2.
BIRTHDAY DESSERT #3. AND THERE’S LOTS MORE WHERE THAT CAME FROM!
ROSSO – TOMASELLI DUO.
I MADE A VIDEO ON THE STREET LAST NIGHT, BUT IT DOESN’T DO THEM JUSTICE.
From Brooklyn, New York; to North Massapequa; back to Brooklyn; Brockport, New York; back to Brooklyn... To Boston, Massachusetts, where I met Jerry... To Marina del Rey, California; Washington, DC; New Haven and Guilford, Connecticut; San Diego, San Francisco, Palm Springs, and Santa Barbara, California; Las Vegas, Nevada; Irvine, California; Sevilla, Spain. Sounds like a fabulous day, full of music and food and good wishes! Feliz Cumpleaños!
You sure know how to celebrate your birthday properly! I always enjoy your photos but LOVE seeing you and Jerry again! Happy Birtdhay (one day late) and mucho abrazos y besos
Sharon: Abrazos y besos atras! I thought it was about time to include a couple of photos of us. It might be time to update my profile pic; the facial hair has "lightened."
Oh– that's GREAT! Sounds like you had a (well-deserved) great birthday day. And-so many birthday desserts! almost as many as the French bises the hostess gave you 🙂
p.s. Did they sing Happy Birthday to you in English, or was it some HB song that is sung in Spanish? In France, they tend to use the English-language 'apppy birrrsssday dooo yooooo" 🙂
Judeet: I added another dessert to the extended birthday celebration, so they would equal those kisses. Happy birthday was sung in American, English (British), and Spanglish and there was also a special Spanish birthday song. It's all been covered.
Ms. Sparrow: The apricot cobbler WAS wonderful. San Geraldo is a magician. He started with fresh apricots, flour, and things, and that's what resulted. And thanks for the compliment!
If I had your phone number, I would have called you and sung to you "Las mañanitas" well, here it goes: Estas son las mañanitas que cantaba el rey David y por ser dia de tu santo, te las canamos a tí…despierta niño despierta, mira que ya amaneció, ya los pajarillos cantan, la luna ya se perdió Feliz cumpleaños atrasado
Feliz Cumpleaños from me too! It looks as though you had a fab day which is what a birthday should be! The apricot cobbler looks delicious. Did it have almonds with it?

Bob:
Gracias. And the celebration continues…
Oh, Happy Belated Birthday! Obviously you had a wonderful time enjoying your special day!
Kristi:
Thanks. And more to come during the week!

Happy Birthday Mitchell!!! Love that photo of you. Looks like you had a wonderful day. Cheers to many more.
Cindy:
Thanks a million, Cindy. And to think you're still only 20!
I'm so glad that you were feted so well on your birthday. Thirty-nine again like Jack Benny?
Stephen:
I figured it out. This was my 21st 39th birthday.
OMG, that apricot cobbler made my mouth water! I must say that you are looking wonderful. Maybe having that "upper" of a day was just what you needed!

Raulito:
Thanks for the written rendition. I will imagine you singing… until you make a recording and upload it!
Feliz Cumpleaños from me too!

The apricot cobbler looks delicious. Did it have almonds with it?
Kirk:
Thanks! San Geraldo is not a huge fan of most nuts, so the cobbler had no almonds. (It's a sacrifice I'm willing to make.)
Happy Birthday! I hope you have a fabulous week!
kisatrtle:
Thanks. So far, so good.
Belated birthday greetings from a dull Wales x
John:
It couldn't possibly be dull with you there! Thanks.
And a joyeux anniversaire from up north!
Walt the Fourth:
Muchas merci!
Si. Es dos dias demasiado tarde, pero 'Happy Birthday' del corazon.
Raybeard:
You could never be too late. And in Spanish, no less! Thanks!
Fabulous birthday. I love the multiple dessert concept.
Knatolee:
I'm starting to OD on desserts. It may be time to stop… at the end of the week.
