The Bodybuilder / El Culturista

Here I am above in the Pocono Mountains of Pennsylvania in 1963 at the age of 9 demonstrating bodybuilding’s side chest pose. Although it might have been the side relaxed pose — or more likely I was simply adjusting my bathing suit.

Two years earlier, Oyster Bay, Long Island. Before I bulked up.

Dos años ántes, en Oyster Bay, Long Island. Antes de que me abultara.
(Oyster Bay, Long Island significa Bahia de Ostras, en Isla Grande.)

And in 1969, the back relaxed pose. Back in Pennsylvania,
at Lancaster Host Resort.

Y en 1969, la espalda relajada posa.
De vuelta en Pennsylvania,
en Lancaster Host Resort.

I’m grateful now, but I was miserable as a kid. All I ever heard was that I was too skinny. I had an aunt who we saw, unfortunately, every week. And, every week, she would talk incessantly about how skinny and unhealthy I was and that my parents should send me to her house to fatten me up, thereby insulting me and my mother (her sister) at the same time.

And you know it’s a statue of me because, if you look at it from the side, you don’t see it!

Years back i was mortified by these photos. Now I find them entertaining… and even cute.

  1. You were (still are) so totally adorable that I can’t think of anything snarky to say 🙂 I have to give props to Bob for being able to spell Ahnold’ s last name. Ooh, just thought of something. That first picture? It looks like you were pulling the leg down on your swim suit. If you had left it alone, you would’ve been years ahead of that one leg shorter than the other trend in shorts!

    1. Deedles:
You are SO kind to me. And, yes, in that first photo I was clearly pulling the leg down. Had I only known!

  2. I never had much “confidence” back during those days of my youth. Only a few pictures of me in swim-trunks exist.

We have so many and I’m regularly going through them. Kind of obsessed right now for some reason.

I don’t know what’s so funny. I was serious. You mean you can’t see the difference?!? I’m unrecognizable in that photo 2 years later.

Well, at least not on the lawn or at the pool. (But, no, thankfully no one ever DID kick sand in my face.)

    1. Kirk:
I spent most of my life with a “nice” tan. Now, my skin only looks good if it’s tan. Otherwise, you see all the damage that was done!
