WYNN HOTEL AND Casino is where the show “Le Reve” (click here) is housed and performed. It’s another of the over-the-top Las Vegas venues, filled with glitz, and cheesiness, and beauty. My aunt and uncle stayed there — once. The colors and glitz work a bit better in the public spaces. My aunt said their room was so garish it gave her nightmares.

I rather liked the few times I went to Las Vegas at the start of the Big Show inside and outside. That is when Treasure Island was the start of things to come. We went to The Blue Man Group and what fun. Now it seems to be too too much.
I would love to go to the Bellagio and see The Dale Chihuly glass work!

I have never seen Blue Man Group but heard they’re great. The Chihuly ceiling is incredible and Bellagio is worth a visit. The Strip itself is much classier than it used to be but it’s still a bit much and the public behavior of visitors (and locals) is often very unpleasant and inappropriate.
Oooh, I think I kind of like garish glitz and cheesy beauty 🙂 So much color revs my motor and lifts my spirits.

Wynn’s public space ARE energizing and impressive; even my aunt agreed. But she said the room should have been a place to escape and unwind and it was far from it.
Always loved the OTT spaces in Las Vegas. It’s been more years than I care to think since I was there last. Back in those days Elvis was headlining, the tits and tassels shows were playing at the Stardust, Tropicana, Dunes and MGM Grand. That was many years ago and much has changed but your wonderful photos say it’s still gloriously OTT.

You wouldn’t recognize Vegas now. The only place left is MGM Grand and it’s dwarfed by what surrounds it But, Elvis is STILL performing.

If you and sweetcheeks ever hit Philly again…you guys MUST take in Longwood Gardens. I think you two would enjoy that.

I have NEVER been to Philly, I’m ashamed to say. And I have heard about Longwood Gardens for years. You’re so right that we would love it. Hmmm… maybe a side trip the next time we’re in NYC?

I had written an entire paragraph about the misogynistic, Drumpf-loving, temporary Republican party leader, crooked Steve Wynn. Then I deleted it because the post went really depressing and ugly. What an awful human being. And now as punishment for his misdeeds and legal woes, he has agreed to sell off his shares. So he’ll walk away with billions. It’s infuriating. And that’s why, if I do ever go to Vegas again (which is unlikely), I will never set foot in Wynn or Encore. Ditto Venetian and Palazzo .. Asshat Adelson properties.

Agreed. If it’s not garish and over the top, it’s completely lost.
Vegas is a bit much, but if it wasn’t it wouldn’t be Vegas.

Yep, it’s exactly how it’s supposed to be. When we lived there the top floor of Caesar’s Palace caught fire. Not a lot of damage but it was then I learned that all the fancy exterior “stone” detail work up there was actually styrofoam!
Hmm…I’ve never quite associated Las Vegas with flowers. It actually looks like something out of the Tournament of Roses parade.

Over the top, in a town that specializes in over the top. It is a fun place to visit, but I don’t know if I could live there.

We lived there for 2 years. My company had major offices there and a huge block of my accounts were the corporate casinos. So now I don’t even find it fun to visit anymore. I really hated living there and hated the kind of culture it encouraged — status, money, power, surface.
My family moved there in 1969, when I was half-way through my senior year of HS. Even though the population then was only around 100,00, what a culture shock for this (then) little Oregon farm girl.

Wow, 1969! You’re not kidding, culture shock. What a time (and age) to move there, and the population is more than 6 times that now. I didn’t like living there 10 years ago but I can’t imagine what it was like in 1969. Not much community life I would think at the time.
My younger brother stayed, married and raised his family there. His two kids are in their 30’s now, one with children. They go to PTA-type stuff, the kids play soccer & little league not unlike anywhere else. Me, I left in May 1970, the day after graduation and returned to Oregon.

It was definitely much more family friendly when we lived there than it would have been in the ‘70s. Like you, I would have made my escape. But I’m glad your brother created a good life in Vegas. It’s a dirty job but someone’s got to do it.
