BOLIVIA HAS A population of 11.5 million people. Half those marched in the parade Wednesday at Fuengirola World People’s Fair. OK, I exaggerate just a bit. But Bolivia had a huge contingent. Other countries had groups of varying sizes and costumes. Some were easily identifiable. The United States had I think two people… in business clothes. Oh, please! Hawaii had its own contingent (and its own pavilion). But then, many continental Americans still don’t know Hawaii is part of the United States. See if you can figure out where in the world these individuals are from. I remember only a few.

Pero Bolivia tenía un gran contingente. Otros países tenían grupos de diferentes tamaños y trajes. Algunos eran fácilmente identificables. Los Estados Unidos tenían dos personas … en ropa de negocios. Oye, ¡por favor! Hawai tenía su propio contingente (y su propia caseta). Actually I think I remember that there WAS a Canadian contingent last year. I didn’t stay for the entire parade, so may have missed them this year.
Being geographically challenged myself, I’m not going to even try to guess. Everybody is so cheerfully colorful!

I stood next to a Spanish family. The man was incredible. He immediately knew every single flag from all over the world. not just Europe. I knew a few but was in awe of him.

Wait,Hawaii is part of the US? I live in “one of those places.” I’ve told people that i once lived in Hawaii and more than one person asked me how it was to live abroad.
Maybe they meant “as a broad”? Hmmmmmmmmmmm

Maybe the business suits were meant to be satirical? After all, capitalism may be considered the United States’ “local custom”.

Yeah, I think they were being ironic, but I still didn’t like it.
I could pick out several countries amongst the costumes. and many americans are ignorant of the rest of the world, as well as their own country.

Last year, there were a few of those American businesspeople plus a bunch of flower children. Ugh!

I have a Smurf with a special commemorative book ! I loved the cartoon and watched it with (or without) my kids.

The white “Smurfs” are from Belgium, in traditional costume — although I’ve only ever seen that exact look here at the parade!

Reportedly a TSA (airport security) officer here in DC, refused a New Mexico drivers license, saying foreigners needed a passport to clear airport security.

Oh. Dear. God. In the ’70s, a woman from New Mexico called into a radio show and told her story. She had phoned a catalog company to order something (remember catalog companies and phone orders?). She gave her address as Albuquerque, New Mexico. The sales rep said: “I’m sorry Ma’am, we only deliver to the United States.” “No. I’m in NEW Mexico.” “I don’t care if it’s new Mexico or old Mexico, we still only deliver to the United States.” But a TSA officer in 2019?!? As I said… Oh. Dear. God.
Back in the late 90s (1990s that is) I was in Miami training a group of airline agents for new US stations we were opening. One of the tests involved geography – sadly at least half of the class of 12 couldn’t place Miami on a map or Washington DC. And when it came to Europe…

Some places should be obvious, I suppose. Most Americans can’t place anything country/city outside the continental United States. Actually most can’t even locate major states and cities WITHIN the continental United States. I knew someone recently who couldn’t locate South Africa on a map of Africa… not even close. But, I’ve learned since living here, that it’s not uncommon for many people to have no clue about geography.
I’m one of those clueless people, probably because it doesn’t interest me. I only know that Helena is the capitol of Montana because Gary (gorgeous when young) Cooper was born there. I am one of the handful of people I’ve talked to who knows that Africa is not a country. I’m proud of that 🙂

In the first year Jerry and I were together, I heard my best friend, Brian (a Bostonian) tell someone that Jerry, being from the South, had a Southern accent. I said, “Brian, Jerry’s from South DAKOTA.” Brain said, “So?” When we were moving to San Diego, another friend (from Westchester County, NY) asked what ocean that was on. I’m SURE they both thought Africa was a country.
Oh the pain. This looks worse than the banditos walking around today for Cinco de Mayo.
