I Want Your Ice Cream / Quiero Tu Helado

La versión español está después de la versión inglés.

I’M HAVING A bit of an ice cream fixation lately. It started when San Geraldo brought home pints of Häagen-Dazs chocolate frappe, which really was like eating a chocolate frappe. SO good. Restaurante Primavera makes their own ice cream, however, and even Häagen-Dazs chocolate frappe, which really is like eating a chocolate frappe, can’t compete with that. Kathleen, Pedro, and Luke shared three scoops last week. Turrón, dulce de leche, and strawberry. They made fast work of it but when Luke and Pedro were distracted Kathleen finished it off. “I’m pregnant!” she said. (She’s been using that line for more than 9 months.) She’s STILL pregnant — although we’re waiting for word that the baby has arrived. Soon she’ll be saying, “I just had a baby!”

My Mother the Dowager Duchess had a fondness for ice cream. It was her favorite food group. Every so often, she would serve us waffles and ice cream for lunch. Once when I was in high school, she decided to diet and lose 5 pounds. The first day, she did so well until lunch time that she rewarded herself with a large bowl of ice cream.

Anyway, Pedro and Kathleen reminded me how good Primavera’s ice cream is, so I’m hooked again. On a recent night I had dulce de leche and turrón. Last night, with new friends we recently met, I had chocolate and turrón. (I love anything turrón.) But, knowing I was going to have two scoops of ice cream for dessert, I had a light and healthy dinner — chicken skewers and vegetables. Everyone else at the table had pizza, and pasta, and cheese, and garlic-cheese bread. They didn’t have room for dessert! I’m waiting for the chef to make up another batch of pistachio. Then I’ll have pistachio and turrón. Or maybe I’ll have three scoops. I missed that dulce de leche last night. Come to think of it, the chocolate was perfection. Four scoops. Maybe that will be my dinner.

.

Cuatro bolas. Quizás esa sea mi cena.

It’s obvious Kathleen was plotting her strategy.
Es obvio que Kathleen estaba tramando su estrategia.
Turrón y chocolate.
Turrón y Dulce de Leche.

¿Crees que CAMP LONG HORN

  1. Not being much of a foodie, I admit I had to look up “frappe”. In some locations it’s merely considered a milkshake, whereas in other places it’s frozen coffee (hence “Frappucinno” which is actually a trademarked drink from Starbucks) Since all it would take for ice cream to become a frozen drink would be for it to melt a bit, I’m assuming you’re referring to frozen coffee. I don’t like coffee, but that picture does make me want some chocolate ice cream, melted or not.

    1. Kirk:
I used to love Starbucks Mocha Frappucinos, although they leave a chemical after-feeling! And, no, I was not referring to a plain old milkshake. But there IS a certain flavor I associate with frappes — kind of like a malted. The ice cream, by the way, has not suggestion of coffee, but it’s got the frothy texture of a Frappucino.

  2. Turron ~ nougat with mucho almonds etc!?
    Hope I got that correct.
Ice cream with espresso chips does it for me.
    Just saying!
Winks all kinds of smiles for ICE CREAM!!!

    1. Ron:
Turrón is very traditional (and popular) in Spain and dates back to the Moorish Conquests, which made me very happy when we moved to Spain. I try to only buy it on special occasions, however. And there are SO many different flavors and ingredients. The basic is honey, eggs, sugar, and nuts — traditionally almonds. (But oh when it’s with pistachios!)

  3. I would like to thank Kirk for looking up “frappe”, now I won’t have to. BH loves his coffee ice cream. It’s right up there with *shudder* rum raisin. I can tolerate it when it has fudge hunks, swirls and almonds (jamocha almond fudge, anyone?). I may have missed something, but what is turron? One other thing, SHARING ICE CREAM? NOOOOOO! I’m not worried about germs, I’m just greedy.
As for Pedro’s shirt, yep, my mind went dirty too. Surprise, huh? Kathleen is kool!

    1. Deedles:
Rum raisin! I could never appreciate that flavor. I knew turrón as “nougat” when I was growing up. Here’s a link so you can get an idea: https://theculturetrip.com/europe/spain/articles/a-brief-history-of-spanish-turron/ And, nope, Jerry and I don’t share ice cream either. And my mother never shared ice cream. Once pints were available in the supermarket, we each had our own individual pint in the freezer (with our names on them). If you finished yours, you were shit out of luck. And thank you for your dirty mind. I immediately went there and KNEW I was meant to. No one else got it!

      1. If rum raisin was the only ice cream in the freezer and I was craving like a hormone disrupted pregnant woman (been there, done that) I would chew off my own foot before eating that crap! I am now reduced to eating No Sugar Added fudgecicles if I want to live. Goodbye Chunky Monkey, Cherry Garcia, Orange Blossom Special etc… I have no self control, and it’s not your fault that to me a pint is one serving, not four, DAMMIT!
Breathe, girl! Okay, I now remember that you had a post about turron. I thought the word looked familiar. This stuff will kill me just looking at the pictures.
Sharing a dirty mind is kind of “special” don’t you think?

      2. Deedles:
I’ve never been a hormone disrupted pregnant woman, but I’m with you about rum raisin. As for those no sugar added fudgesicles, we tried those because they were low in calories. We ate four at a time! My diabetes is completely under control with one pill a day (knock wood), but I do try to behave myself. I’ve always been a fairly healthy eater, but I do go on binges every now and again (chocolate especially). Since the diagnosis, my huge binge is two scoops of ice cream along with a super healthy meal. And no problem for me: I haven’t had Cherry Garcia or Chunky Monkey in more than 8 years… although that’s only because it’s not sold in Spain. As for turrón, i have always loved it. So to have access to all these locally produced options could have been disastrous for me. But even before the diabetes diagnosis I knew I needed to watch my step. I could inhale it… and I do whenever I get some. And, thanks again for your juvenile sense of humor (like mine). EVERYTHING goes over Jerry’s head. English is Pedro’s second language. And Kathleen just doesn’t think that way.

  4. Yum, I can see why Kathleen is using the pregnancy to her advantage. Nothing better in the world than in-house homemade icecream (except maybe Gelato and Sorbet which all tie about equally)

    1. Cheapchick:
Well, gelato is really just ice cream in Italian (like helado in Spanish), so I’ll agree. I DO enjoy sorbet, too, but ice cream is my real love.

  5. This is a wonderful tasty and delicious looking post!
And yes, you are the only one here with a dirty mind!! lol

    1. Jim:
Oh, no I’m not the only one. Deedles and David (Travel Penguin) both went there as well. There’s safety in numbers!

  6. I’m the odd-ball who does not like ice cream.
I enjoy getting frappe’d every now and again though.

    1. Bob:
Aren’t you also not a big fan of chocolate? You might want to be tested. For what, i don’t know. But there’s something seriously wrong.

  7. ummmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm, ice cream! B&J’s chunky monkey is my fave. bit I also like strawberry, and peach, and butter krunch, and black raspberry, and and and…

pedro is SO handsome! c’mon, kathleen, drop that baby! and that homemade ice cream looks fabu!

    1. anne marie:
Not a fan of strawberry ice cream usually (although Primavera’s is out of this world). And Chunky Monkey!!! Oh, so good. Haven’t had that in years. Another favorite is New York Super Fudge Chunk.

  8. Ice cream makes an outstanding meal. I haven’t made ice cream in a long time. I keep telling myself that I want to make cinnamon ice cream, but if I get started making ice cream, I won’t stop and I’ll weigh 300 pounds.

    Love,
    Janie

    1. Janie:
I once had homemade cinnamon ice cream. SO good. We never made ice cream at home. Jerry’s family did.

    1. Judy:
Oh, I’m still dreaming of ice cream! We’re leaving town for 10 days on Tuesday. Have to get back to Primavera before we go!

  9. I get the little cups from the freezer section because I often let a whole half gallon go bad when I forget about it.

    1. Adam:
I’d eat four of those little cups at one sitting. I’ve never heard of ice cream going bad. Besides, if I don’t finish mine soon enough, Jerry has at it.

  10. Pistachio is Ken’s favorite ice cream flavor (and I like it too, but coconut and vanilla tie for my favorites). Now I have a craving.

    1. Walt the Fourth:
Pistachio is one of my all-time favorites… as long as it’s natural. I hate that green pistachio ice cream. Not a fan of coconut. But good vanilla (on a crepe with some kind of fruit and sauce) will do.
