AT 9:15 THIS morning I phoned The Kid Brother. We planned to meet for lunch at the original Nathan’s in Coney Island, which is diagonally across the street from the subway station. “Let’s make it 10,” he ordered.
“Chuck,” I said, “I can’t get there that fast from here. I can get there by 10:30.”
“Not 10?” “No, not 10. At 10:30.” “OK. OK,” he muttered, “See you at 10:30.”
Meeting The Kid Brother somewhere can be stressful. Sometimes he changes his mind and doesn’t show up. It isn’t uncommon for him to have “stepped out” when he knows I’m coming to pick him up.
I hustled to the subway and arrived at Nathan’s at 10:20 — where I waited for The Kid Brother. Until 10:48!
“You’re late,” I joked (something he loves telling ME).
“I know!”
“Did something happen?” I asked.
“No.”
Case closed.

A LAS 9:15 de la mañana llamé a El Hermanito. Planeamos reunirnos para almorzar en Nathan’s original en Coney Island, que está en diagonal al otro lado de la calle desde la estación de metro.. “Hagámoslo 10”, ordenó.

“Llegas tarde”, bromeé (algo que le encanta decirME).

“¿Paso algo?” Yo pregunté.
“¡No!”

Your endless patience with El Hermanito remains an inspiration to me as I struggle to summon similar patience with my DH with Alzheimer’s. And BTW, I think this is the first video of you speaking that I’ve watched, and you have a lovely voice. Do you do choral singing, or have you ever considered same?

I can’t imagine what you’re going through. That requires so much more strength. As for patience, I think that comes with not having expectations and just being able to flow. And that’s not easy to do. Regarding my voice: thanks! I do love character-type singing. My natural voice is actually very different from my Ed Norton voice. I’ll have to share something.

Nathan’s only at the original in Coney Island. I don’t know why. But I do love Sabrett’s and haven’t had one since I worked my first job in Manhattan in the ‘79s!

I loved it!!!!!!!!! You handsome devil! I am not a huge hot dog fan…now why did I just hear everybody clutch their pearls in shock? But Yes…I have to really want and be hungry for a hot dog to eat one and enjoy. Chill and onions are always good accompaniments.

Handsome Devil? You’re very kind. I think I look bizarre in that. Chili and onions is not a NYC thing. I usually just use mustard. This is the one time a year I have hot dogs… although I used to at 7 at a sitting at a barbecue.
