AS THE SONG says, I love to go a-wandering, although not always along a mountain track. Here’s just a bit of the beauty I’ve recently seen around town. Coming soon are photos of what’s blooming and budding at our place.
The first video at the end is Myron Floren performing the song “The Happy Wanderer.” He is best known as the accordionist on The Lawrence Welk Show — a television program San Geraldo grew up loving and I grew up laughing at. Lawrence Welk was from Strasburg, a German-speaking community in North Dakota. Floren performed at SG’s Sunday School in the 1950s. One of the highlight’s of his life (SG’s, not Myron Floren’s — well maybe for both).

My sister would do Norman Zimmer while I sang along as the guy she sometimes sang with. I never remembered his name, so I just looked it up. Jimmy Roberts!

The trees filled with pink balls are i think commonly know as Pink Ball Trees (Dombeya wallichii, also known as tropical hydrangea). The first and last pics are of flame vine. Prolific a round here but never did anything on our terrace. And then there’s a yellow rose poking out from bougainvillea.
I was one of the laughers as well….no disrespect, SG!

Question: The first photo at top……is that a ‘Trumpet Vine’? How wonderful it is.

Lawrence Welk? UGH! He always gave me the creeps for some reason… I was fascinated by the Lennon Sisters’ hair, though 🙂 This made me suddenly realize that 1920 was one hundred years ago! Wow!

I did like the Lennon Sisters. I remember when Kathy turned Sweet 16. But I really loved Leslie Uggams. And he didn’t make her tap dance! Can’t imagine what it was like to work on that show. Saw her in Anything Goes in the ‘80s. She was perfect. Then there was Bob McGrath, who ended up on Sesame Street!

I so totally forgot about Mitch Miller! My grandmother used to watch that show all the time. I still remember his face, but nothing else about his show. Side note (aren’t they all?), I recently watched Deadpool 2 (never saw the first one) and I kept wracking my brain trying to figure out who was playing the blind woman. She was so very familiar to me. I thought, Nichelle Nichols, no….who is it! Then the one of her voice hit me, Kizzy, from Roots! Leslie Uggams, wow! She was really good in that. I used to love to hear her sing.
That’s tone of her voice. Sheesh! Fat finger fail.

I have skinny fingers and they fail all the time, too! I do love Leslie Uggams. The best part of Mitch Miller when I was a kid (other than his name) was “Follow the bouncing ball” sing-alongs!
We used to watch Lawrence Welk every week when I was growing up. I don’t think I laughed at it, exactly, but I also knew it was kind of over-the-top. (Which made me like it even more!) And I used to have a record as a kid with that song on it. I love that orange vine and the whale mural.

Flame vine is very common and spectacular all over town. We planted it in pots on our terrace but it never took off.
My Mom and I used to laugh at the Lawrence Welk Show all the time! Years later, when she was in the nursing home, I knew dementia had her in its grips when she suddenly became a fan of the Lawrence Welk reruns on PBS. It was her favourite show.

I watched because I watched everything as a kid, but it was never my favorite variety show for reasons having nothing to do with the musical selections. There were no comedy skits! Even Andy Williams had comedy skits!

I think it’s a Dombeya wallichii, also known as tropical hydrangea… although more commonly known as Pink Ball Tree. That entire park area in front of the block-long building is lined with them.
I absolutely love the flower pictures – amazing what color can do for your mood.

So uplifting. We’ve decided to plant hibiscus on the terrace again. Damn the bugs.
Bobby-um and a Sissy-um. Valdera-a-a-a-a-a-a-a. That’s all I got. Oh, I ate at Welk’s restaurant in Escondido once. Drinks were served by the Champagne Lady. Ok, I made up that last part.

We drove right by Welk’s in Escondido, regularly. My sister used to sing along with Norma Zimmer.
