Lockdown Day 33: About My Balls / Encierro Día 33: Sobre Mis Pelotas

La versión español está después de la versión inglés.

SORRY ABOUT THE TITLE. I’M just being juvenile. Nothing new. Besides, this isn’t really about MY balls. It’s about ANNE MARIE’S balls. And they’re superb!

Anne Marie [in Philly] is the enlightened, funny, interesting, entertaining, bawdy blogger (with great taste in music) of “From My Brain to My Mouth.” I love that what comes out of Anne Marie’s mouth first passes through her brain. I wish that were standard practice. But back to her balls. (Sorry, Anne Marie.)

Anne Marie, herself, never called them balls. She called them “Energy Bites.” Fine. Anne Marie shared the recipe a while back. Of course, my eyes rolled up into my head and that was the end of that. But then my wonderful friend Susan sent the recipe to me a second time, knowing that sometimes I need a little push. And also knowing the recipe might even be simple enough for me to take on. And she was right.

OK, again this was cooking without heat (which is why Susan suggested the recipe). However, this is more “processing” than I’ve done in ages. And I had a really good time. I didn’t add nuts to my balls because San Geraldo doesn’t like nuts. He does, however, love my balls! He sampled one Wednesday afternoon and immediately asked for another.

Although the instructions said to roll into 25 balls, I ended up with 21. Yes, I prefer bigger balls.

Thanks, Anne Marie, for the recipe. Thanks, Susan, for the gentle shove. I’ve had two successful forays into the kitchen in the past week. Are you as surprised as I am?

Oh, and don’t you worry about the sharp knives in the photo above. San Geraldo chopped up a chocolate bar for my chocolate chips. I didn’t touch anything sharp. Click on the images below and you’ll finally see my balls in all their glory.

ANNE MARIE’S ENERGY BITES

Ingredients
• 1 cup old-fashioned oatmeal
• 1/2 cup Creamy Peanut Butter
• 1/2 cup ground flaxseed
• 1/3 cup honey or agave nectar
• 1 tsp Pure vanilla extract
Stir in up to any 3 of these
• 1/2 cup dried cherries, raisins, blueberries or cranberries
• 1/2 cup unsalted chopped almonds, pecans, walnuts, pistachios or peanuts
• 1/2 cup crushed whole-grain pretzels or cereal
• 1/2 cup dark chocolate chips
Directions
1. Place all ingredients in a large bowl and stir until well combined.
2. Cover and refrigerate for 30 minutes so the mixture is easier to shape.
3. Using your hands or a cookie scoop, roll mixture into 25 (1-inch) balls.
4. Refrigerate in an airtight container for up to 1 week.

NOTE:
Where I had options, I used honey, dried blueberries, muesli (cereal), and chocolate chips.

LO SIENTO POR EL TÍTULO. Solo estoy siendo juvenil. Nada nuevo.

No toqué nada afilado. Haz clic en las imágenes a continuación y finalmente verá mis pelotas en todo su esplendor.

Si desea la receta en español, avíseme y la traduciré lo mejor que pueda.

    1. But flaxseed is good for nursing mothers. Anyway, I would expect adding 1/2 cup of one of the other optional ingredients would do the trick.

  1. reminds me of this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bPpcfH_HHH8

oooooh, mitchell, your balls are divine, you get a dozen for a dime, it’s maaaaaaaaagic. (old song)

GREAT job “cooking”! I use oatmeal, honey, peanut butter, vanilla, chocolate chips for mine.

and for a moment, I thought you were going to talk about my balls of yarn.

(sings to the tune “I love trash”) oh oh I love balls, anything hairy and roundy and sweety.

and OF COURSE SG loves your balls; that’s why he married you, amirite?

    BESOS, MI AMIGO!

      1. Mistress Maddie:
I worried I was taking things too far but I remembered all the stories you’ve told about Anne Marie. THEN she wrote her comment and I knew for certain I had nothing to worry about. No limits!

    1. anne marie:
That SNL routine is a classic, and that was at a time when I didn’t like it much. Molly Shannon and Ana Gasteyer really aced NPR. Susan actually just sent me a recipe for “Schweddy” balls. Too much cooking involved. I don’t know the Divine Balls song. You should perform it on your blog (I haven’t found it on youtube). Thanks again for the recipe. I am loving my balls! Um, your balls? Ah. Balls!

  2. Now that was a ballsy post. 🙂 I was relieved to read that no knives were handled by you in the making of the balls.

    1. David:
Although I love peanut butter I don’t tend to like it in baked goods because it overpowers the other flavors and I don’t find it refreshing (it makes me thirsty). But this is the perfect amount. Even SG, who doesn’t like peanut butter, loves this.

  3. I’ve always known that Anne Marie (my darling Carebear) had major balls! I prefer male balls so I’d add nuts. I’m not a big fan of peanut butter or honey, but I’d try it. I just don’t have the patience to wait a week to eat them. So I went to bed laughing (your last post) and now I woke up to laughter. Thanks, Scoot 🙂

    1. Deedles:
I love nuts! But I was surprised at how much I loved Anne Marie’s balls nutless. SG isn’t a big fan of peanut butter either, but he loved these. The peanut butter doesn’t overwhelm and the honey just adds more sweetness and holds them together. Not too much of any one flavor. Hope today’s post makes you chuckle a little, too.

      1. Deedles:
Guffawed? Pshaw! (It just sounded good.) Anyway, I have no clue what I’ll talk about on Saturday!

  4. I love everything about this post!!!!!! From the eye catching title to the awesome AC/DC song at the end (which I always, always, sing along to at the top of my lungs! Ha!) this was a good one. You win the blogroll for today, okay? 🙂

Those energy bites look dee-lish. I may just have to try some of Anne Marie’s (and your) balls! Hahahhaahaha!!!

    1. Jennifer:
As you can probably tell, I had really good time writing it. I wish I could have found the original AC/DC version with Spanish subtitles. Anne Marie’s balls are SO good. I will make them again and vary the ingredients.

  5. The picture really looks like blood on that cutting board, as I am sure you included it for that reason 🙂 Once again, well done! SG might take a backseat in the kitchen to you soon!

    1. Cheapchick:
I know. I thought the photo and the title would really make you wonder. And, trust me, SG will never take a backseat to me in the kitchen. I may be more entertaining… sometimes… but he is more nourishing.

  6. The blog post title and that first photo were VERY foreboding, LOL! But Anne Marie’s Energy Bites look delicious — I’m going to copy the recipe and give them a try myself.

    1. Debra:
The recipe was a resounding success. And if it went so well for me, I guarantee you’ll like the results. And, yeah, i knew what I was doing with the title and featured photo.

  7. Listen…”I love that what comes out of Anne Marie’s mouth” is probably better than what we see what’s going it it!!!!!!!!!!!! And I still think they should be called Anne Marie’s Energy balls!!!!!!! She like her balls, Ill say that.

And I am thankful your balls weren’t injured in the making of this post. At first all I saw was a bloodly board, and a knife, the title of balls, and thought about your history with knives. I can rest now.

    1. Mistress Maddie:
When i started writing I really did think they were Energy Balls. Was disappointed that the actual name was so much more respectable. So I did what I had to do. Yeah, I thought I was clever with the title and knives photo. I really enjoyed myself with this one. My balls are always at risk in the kitchen. They’re right at the height of the countertop. Ironing, too. I learned [the hard way] to never iron naked.

    1. Wilma:
They are SO good. And have some very healthy ingredients. I love snacks like these. Susan sent me the recipe for Schweddy balls that sound really good. But pure dessert. Nothing truly nutritional about them. Plus, I’d have to MELT chocolate (although she did tell me I could do that in the microwave, so still no heat needed.)

  8. Since I’m always late to the party, all the good (or bad) lines have been taken. Balls! They do look tasty…

    1. Walt the Fourth:
And you could have had such a good time. But, yes, thank you. My balls ARE tasty.
