Lockdown Day 50: Put a Fork in It / Encierro Día 50: Ponle un Tenedor

La versión español está después de la versión inglés.

SAN GERALDO BAKED ANOTHER DELICIOUS apple cake Friday afternoon. After dinner, he cut us a couple of slices while I started to get the dishes organized for washing.

“Do we take a fork with that?” I heard him ask from across the kitchen.

“Yes,” I replied.

He cut our two slices and said, “I don’t think we take a fork but it looks good.”

“We always use forks,” I insisted.

“Really? I don’t think so.”

And then I looked over to discover he had cut the cake in half and then split one of those halves for our dessert. “Oh, wait,” I said, “Did you say ‘Do we take a fourth of that?’ I thought you said a fork!”

“Is this too much?” (Of course not.)

We ate half the cake. We split the other half into the usual four servings Saturday (and, no, we did not eat them all at once).

Speaking of clarity, we look forward to more when it comes to the rules regarding easing of restrictions. I won’t go into all the details of who can go out and when and for how long and with whom and what we can do when we’re out there. I’m sure points that need clarification will soon be clarified.

One peculiar point: Walks are limited to a kilometer from home, while sport (running, bicycling, skating, etc.) is limited to the municipality. My walk is my sport and some have interpreted that to mean we can go longer distances. But that’s an assumption. People have asked, “If we wear tracksuits, can we go further than a kilometer?” Since I’m not yet clear on the rules, I walked hither and yon within a kilometer of home.

My final stop before coming back home (because it was nearly 10:00) was the park a few minutes away that contains Roman ruins (fish salting plant, tile factory, baths). I was pleased to find the park re-opened. It’s a great place for a quiet walk and exploration away from the beach. More of that coming soon. No more apple cake, however, until SG bakes again.

  1. Finally you can go a little further from home. May put yourself on ‘repeat mode’ a few times so that you can get in your mileage.
Interesting how the local government is getting everyone back to ‘normal’ activities……very slowly. We are trying that here as well. We’ll see how it all goes.
    That cake looks very edible.
    Stay safe.

    1. Jim:
I walked for 45 minutes on the beach last night. THAT was a pleasure. And, yes, we’re taking it VERY slowly here. It’s not easy, but I’ll be patient. I would hate to see this start all over.

  2. ummmmmmmm, apple cake…

friday our gov opened the golf courses/state parks. masks/social distancing mandatory to use these facilities. our lockdown ends this friday. spouse goes back into his physical office 5/13 instead of working from home.

it’s nice to see pix of people outside your location again. empty streets are sad streets.

    1. anne marie:
The phasing out of our lockdown is going to be a very slow process. We’re in Phase 0 of 4. Phase 1 starts on the 11th. That might allow us to travel within the province, small shops will open under strict guidelines, restaurants at 30 percent capacity on outdoor terraces, and more.

  3. So pretty there, being able to amble about will be nice. We ran an errand yesterday, I was shocked by the crowded businesses. Too much too fast. I just arranged for my summer student interns to start in June as telecommutes.

    1. David:
I don’t know how busy it now gets in the big cities here, but there are still very strict controls for numbers of people allowed in supermarkets. Only necessary businesses are open. People I’ve seen have been for the most part very responsible and respectful. It sure is nice to get out for no reason other than to be out!

  4. Today’s banner photo for me, was from the Metropolitain Museum of Art in NYC 🙂 I remember when you posted photos from that room, last time you were there, because I had just been, too 🙂

Funny question about wearing a track suit–ha! SG’s apple cake looks just so so so good. I’ll take a fork with that 😉

    1. Judy:
The truth is I think a lot of people wouldn’t even use silverware for the apple cake. I really enjoyed getting back to the Metropolitan last year. Was thinking of Natural History next time… whenever that might be; it sure doesn’t look like it will be in September as planned.

  5. Now, did you indeed fork? That piece looks like a hand job to me. I would like to see almost every photo you take turned into a jigsaw puzzle! Stay safe and sane (too late?).

    1. Deedles:
I’ve thought of having puzzles made from some of these photos. I’ve added a lot of photos to jigsawplanet.com, but it’s not the same. Definitely too late for sane… loopy and happy would be nice.

  6. People here are flooding the streets like mad so, clearly, the virus is going nowhere any time soon.

And yes, you and SC, Carlos and me, same.

    1. Bob:
I’m grateful for the strict control taken here. People have been great but not everyone can be relied upon to do the right thing without proper guidance, as we well know (and have seen).

    1. larrymuffin:
For me, there’s something very healthy feeling about that apple cake. Anyway, it’s not like eating a quarter of one of SG’s chocolate cakes in one sitting.

  7. Mmmm, that apple cake looks good! I would just pick it up and eat it with my bare hands, like an animal.

    1. Debra:
It’s tempted. That specific cake could easily be eaten without utensils. SG and I still try to be polite in front of each other (well, at least I do).

  8. I am sure the rules will become clearer, strange you can cycle long distance but not walk, not very well thought out. Still, so glad you can finally walk somewhere other than the grocery store, pharmacy or recycle bin. And that apple cake!

    1. Cheapchick:
Hasn’t been made any more clear. I don’t get the running more than 1 km and not walking more. But I’m doing what I’m told. I can still get a great walk in looping around town. And an hour walk on the beach is excellent. It was odd to go out yesterday for the first time and not have to clearly have a goal other than pleasure. I kept think I was going to be stopped.

  9. This is a word play in English; I suppose there are similar in Spanish. Do you two every speak Spanish at home?

    1. Urspo:
Some Spanish phrases have become standard for us, so we automatically use those. We speak English almost exclusively but will every so often have an exchange in Spanish. I would probably do it most of the time if SG wanted to.

  10. You each ate a quarter of the cake? I can see why you need to walk! 🙂 Seriously, how would anyone know how far you’re walking from home? Are police checking papers with your address or anything like that?

    1. Steve:
The cake is filled with apples, so VERY healthy! It’s like having three fruit courses at once. As for going out, we have to have ID with us at all times and the police can stop and check. I have friends, however, who insist we can WALK as far as we want. But the rules clearly state walking/1 km and running and sports/within municipality. Doesn’t make much sense to me but those are the rules that are written.

    1. Parsnip:
And actually for 4 hours in the morning and 3 in the evening if we want, plus the usual errands. So we can be out and about a lot now.

  11. I haven’t been out of the house since April 8 when I drove my husband to his dentist for a root canal. I’ll do the same tomorrow when he goes back for the finish of the procedure. I miss eating out and being with family.

    1. bethbfromindiana:
Wow. So kind of your husband to create excitement and adventure this past month. Hope he can come up with something better this month. We really miss eating out!

    1. Walt the Fourth:
And it’s become your word. I can’t write it or say without thinking of you. Is it actually (is THERE actually a) Star Wars Day!
