IN THE OFF SEASON, MANY chiringuitos remove the tops from their thatched beach umbrellas (if they have the upscale ones with separate tops) for easier storage. Others don’t because they don’t shut down long enough to make the extra work worthwhile.
Lately, whenever I’ve walked by one particular chiringuito, I’ve been singing (usually silently but sometimes not) “You Can Leave Your Hat On” — because that’s how my brain works. So, the other morning when I saw a guy putting “hats” on the previously hatless umbrellas, the song started all over again. I watched at first but the step ladder was tall, it wasn’t anchored very well in the sand, and he tipped several times in the few minutes I was there. I thought, “How am I going to maintain my social distance and catch him when he falls?” I decided to simply move on. Nice, huh?
AS I HEADED TOWARD HOME, I turned back and noticed he had made himself more comfortable. But he kept his hat on — and his Crocs.
The first four photos below are of the man at work — before and after he stripped. The photo above is last night’s surf. The rest of the photos are from my walk on the beach this morning. First, all those beach umbrellas with their hats; then, another spot on the beach with brand-new, elegant umbrellas; and, finally, sunrise was too good to keep to myself. EN LA TEMPORADA BAJA, MUCHOS chiringuitos quitan la parte superior de sus sombrillas de playa con tapas de paja (si tienen las de lujo con tapas separadas) para facilitar el almacenamiento. Otros no lo hacen porque no cierran el tiempo suficiente para que valga la pena el trabajo.
Últimamente, cada vez que he pasado por un chiringuito en particular, he estado cantando (por lo general en silencio, pero a veces no) “You Can Leave Your Hat On” [Puedes Dejar tu Sombrero Puesto], porque así es como funciona mi cerebro. I hear on the news that Spain will soon be open for tourists. Hmmm.

Your Crocs? Only if you want to be smacked by Mistress Maddie (but, you know, they really ARE comfortable and easy; I had a pair once).
Crocs should be on permanent lockdown.

I’ll bet you wouldn’t say that if they started producing them in plaids.
European beaches are so regimented…everything in neat rows and uniform. But there are days when I’d give anything to be on a beach anywhere. Our lake here has been shut down since March 13.
Our beaches were closed until just a few weeks ago. To be steps away and not be able to cross the police tape wasn’t easy. Not all European beaches are so regimented. Some are natural. But we’re in a tourist town.
time to get the beach ready for summer; social distancing in place of course while there. and I KNEW maddie would have something to say about crocs. that guy’s ladder doesn’t look too sturdy.

That was a very tall ladder and very unstable footing. He was up and down several times for each umbrella. I wonder how it makes Maddie feel to know that any time anyone mentions Crocs, we all think of him!
A bit of rough surf the night before–love the sound of surf pounding the beach. Gorgeous sunrise photos–especially the blue-green colors of the first one. Definitely wowed.

I have some recordings of the surf I plan to share. I could listen to it all day. Amazing to be able to hear it at home.
I be wowed! I didn’t know a person could climb a ladder while wearing crocs!

I think the warning on the Crocs box specifically says DO NOT CLIMB LADDERS. But you know how people listen.
One of my all time favorite songs! Some time back now, Dennis and I went to a Tina Turner concert that was opened by Joe Cocker. They were both fantastic.
That surf looks rough, but exciting. Another day of calm seas here. It promises to be sunny and hot.

Joe Cocker and Tina Turner in one night would be amazing. What energy. We entered on the Red Carpet at Grauman’s Chinese Theater (we knew someone) for the opening of the film “Tootsie” right behind Tina Turner. (That’s almost as good, I suppose, as my uncle ramming Barry Manilow’s limo at Kennedy Airport.)
He looks buck naked in the 4th picture….at first I thought you were going to show us another picture of a man-god…not so much 🙂 Lovely sunrise shots

It was so funny to catch him at that angle. He really kept his shorts on, too. Maybe today’s photos will be less disappointing.
I honestly didn’t know the tops of those umbrellas were detachable. Learn something new.
As for Joe Cocker, just why did he want her (assuming it was a her) to leave her hat on? She hadn’t washed her hair? Or maybe it was in curlers? The mind boggles.

I never knew that either until we moved here. I always thought that song was so sexy; now I can’t stop thinking about WHY!
Love those ‘hats! Are these rented? I bet they are very popular.

Yes, there are chaise lounges and umbrellas for rent all along the beach. It’s usually €4.50 for a chair for the day (the umbrella, obviously comes with). Some places are directly connected with a chiringuito and have bar service. Others are close enough.
Wait, did that guy get NAKED? Is this a clothing-optional beach?! I can’t imagine how difficult it must be to try to balance a ladder on sand.

Maybe I should fix that; it’s a bit misleading. He took his shirt off. But my position was perfect for making it look like he was naked … except for hat and Crocs. We have two nude beaches nearby, but their 10 minutes by car in either direction, not in town.
Has it been really 72 days? Time flies and frankly it’s like there is no end to this. Will you have tourists this Summer? I doubt we will and despite the fact we have no cases here for more than a month now, we are re-opening slowly but every one is cautious.

Even when it officially ends, you’re right, it really won’t be over. They just announced tourists will be allowed beginning in July. But it looks like there will be special agreements with different European countries and it’s not going to be easy. If we DO have lots of tourists, we’ll probably be back to staying home for meals.
I think this is what I am most afraid of, never ending and now climate change with soaring temperature in May which is abnormal by it intensity. Many people are starting to understand the peril we face.
