Lockdown Day 73: Good Bait / Encierro Día 73: Buen Cebo

SWIMMING IS PERMITTED ON OUR beaches as long as you swim for “sport” as opposed, I guess, to simply wading in and splashing around. I know. I know. It’s not always easy to make sense of things, but we do the best we can.

We are supposedly not permitted to sit on the beach (until Phase 2 next week). We can, however, walk — and stop briefly to rest. And we can sit on the beach if we’re fishing. So, that pastime has become even more popular here in recent days. I told SG I was going to [pretend to] take up fishing (no I’m not) so I could lounge on the beach. I even saw someone reel in a decent-sized meal Monday morning (sea bream, I think).

But some of the a-fish-ionados (GROAN) don’t fit the part. Like the two men and two women who hung out in the sun all day Saturday. I noticed them even from the distance of our terrace because one of the guys was wearing a large red dangling earring that momentarily flashed brightly in the sun.

When I zoomed in, I saw that he was worth a second look with or without a dangling earring. And maybe he was actually serious about fishing. He certainly had the equipment (and so did the woman he was with).

He and his friend were wearing their shorts Fuengirola Style. The guy with the “earring,” which wasn’t an earring after all, was doing the one-shorts-leg-shorter-than-the-other thing (although it kept sliding down, as that style tends to do), while his friend was going for the diaper look. There was even a bit of plumber’s crack on display.

If you weren’t interested before in sitting on the beach and fishing, maybe these photos will help. You never know what you might catch. Click the images and decide.

  1. That ‘fisherman’ had a great day…..he ‘lured’ you in!!
Our soft opening up is full of contradictions as well it appears.
Guess it will all be figured out through trial and error.
Did Spain have a 2nd wave?

    1. Jim:
We haven’t had a second wave, and half the country is already at Phase 2. Here’s hoping. It’s not a stress-free time, is it?!?

  2. fishies! mister green shorts doesn’t look too bad. mister black shorts needs to cover his crack.

    1. anne marie:
I always want to walk up behind people and pull up their pants, but I don’t think they’d understand. (I also always want to tuck in people’s labels, and sometimes they stick out above their cracks, which would definitely NOT be appreciated.)

  3. When you dangle that bait, you never know what you are going to catch, Mr. Green shorts, or Mr Florescent Yellow in the second picture.

    1. Bob:
That’s where he keeps his bobber… Or is it his sinker? I can never remember. I’d be happy to check for you.

  4. All that ink on the woman. Can’t help thinking what it will look like in 30 years…on aging, crepier skin. Reminds me of a distant family member who has spent so much time in the sun (or tanning bed) that she is referred to as Aunt Leather.

Wonder how anyone can swim when so many people are throwing hooks out into the water.

    1. Mary:
I wonder about the swimming, too. They sure do cast far out. Normally, you wouldn’t see people swimming and fishing at the same time, but these are not normal times.

Lots of that leathery tattooed skin when tourist season is high. Makes me think twice about getting a tattoo. My father’s best friend was in the Navy during WWII. He had a mermaid on one upper arm, an anchor on the other forearm, and a battleship on his chest. It was SO cool when we were kids. The last time I saw the tattoos, he was in his 50s. They had all faded and gone muddy. The mermaid looked kind of like a walrus; the anchor was a mushy fleur du lis; and the battleship… Well, the battleship had sunk.

  5. They were well-equipped, for sure. And seemed to be having a fine day. Even in phase 1 you are getting some interesting views on your walks.

It was oppressively hot and humid here yesterday. Today is cloudy with a little bit of drizzle that won’t amount to much, but at least it is a tiny bit cooler.

    1. Wilma:
I probably shouldn’t say (type) this out loud, but we have been having perfect weather. Sunny, clear, high 70s, slight breeze. Even the sea water is inviting (normally way too cold for me).

The City seems to be loosening up a little despite the fact that we’re still in Phase 1. But people are less stressed about getting out, so the views are getting more interesting. Those I’ve seen around town are mostly following the rules (and I haven’t seen anyone being belligerent). Hoping it stays that way. We haven’t yet gone to a restaurant terrace for dinner, and next week they’ll be opening indoors. Then the out-of-towners (only Spaniards) will be allowed back in, and that makes me REALLY nervous. Not as easy to control the larger crowds.

  6. Well at least one of them was a real fisherman (the one that caught the fish)….but opening beaches is a bit scary. Maybe not as long as tourists stay away for now. They opened a park in Toronto (one of our Canadian hotspots with increasing cases, not decreasing) and people flocked there, so many they may keep the lockdown even longer on there. Ours has eased thankfully but people in general are STUPID!

    1. Cheapchick:
Honestly, most of the guys fishing there were very happy to be able to do so. The guy who caught the fish was with two friends who were clearly serious about it. There’s still no lying on the beach permitted (and those places along the beach that rent chaises are not yet open. I think that will come next week, with additional regulations. Everything is an adjustment. I’m appalled by the behavior of so many people (and leaders in places like the USA). We’ve been very grateful to be here, in Southern Spain, in this small city. My learning-disabled brother is a lot smarter, more responsible and respectful, and less selfish than so many others. I’m really proud of him.

  7. Nothing in the world could induce me to take up fishing — not even quasi-hunky guys in form-fitting swim trunks. (Well, OK, maybe.) I do not get the tattoo thing.

    1. Steve:
I think tattoos can be so sexy, like the green-shorted fisherman’s. I wouldn’t mind sitting on the beach, enjoying the day while my fishing rod sat planted in the sand. Sitting on a boat holding that in my hands for hours on end was, I found, the most boring occupation.

  8. Yes, looks like you are relaxing more than now. And yes the guy in the green is worth 30 good looks tootes! I think people hear relax or phase one and all hell breaks loose and rules out the window right quick. Many places were a complete disaster here, in mostly idiot states you’d expect. I still don’t know I’ll do the beach this year or not yet. I could still go and just stay at the house my friend owns there, and I can lay on a beach all day, I just worry about other people getting near me. we go to the private part of the beach since his house is considered a part of it, but people still wonder down when they see prime real-estate to spread out. But I did hear Rehoboth Beach, the closest to me and my beach home away from home, did a superb job with social distancing and crowd control, on and off the boardwalk,,,, so that made me feel better. But I don’t think the world has seen the second coming of this yet. Two of the first people I know now caught covid and both in New York. New York is starting to even get relaxed much to fast in my opinion, considering they were a very hot spot.

    1. Mistress Maddie:
Things are getting better around here, although every new bit of exposure to the outside world can be stressful. So strange to live with so many unknowns. I’m glad you got to enjoy glamping and I hope you can soon enjoy Rehoboth.

  9. I don’t know about the rest of those losers, but MY tattoos will still look MAGNIFICENT when I’m 80.

    1. Debra:
If you have them in the right places, although some may need a bit of touch-up maintenance, they can always look good. Had my father’s friend had the mermaid and anchor touched up over the years, they wouldn’t have been so weird. But there really was no hope for that sinking ship.

  10. Got a whale of a tale to tell ya, lads
A whale of a tale or two
‘Bout the flappin’ fish and the girls I’ve loved
On nights like this with the moon above
A whale of a tale, and it’s all true
    I swear by my tattoo.

    1. Walt the Fourth:
Now why do I have Kirk Douglas prancing around in my head?!?

  11. Look how strategically placed are those white lines on the green shorts. To say any more might be in violation of the spirit of social distancing.

    1. Kirk:
I hadn’t thought about the fact that by not tying the drawstring, he not only made “himself” more easily accessible, but he also framed things perfectly.
