I WAS BACK AT THE orthodontist yesterday afternoon. I’m attempting to get my retainers. It’s not going well. Personally, I like my orthodontist. Professionally? Well, I’ll tell you all about it another day.
Meanwhile, after only a week in Phase 2, we’ve moved onto Phase 3 along with 52 percent of the country. We’ll see how things go with more freedom of movement and with more people coming to town.
The one good thing that came out of my visit to the orthodontist yesterday was my 4-km (2.5-mile) walk home along the beach. The day was glorious. The wind was gusting at times but not like the day of my microdermabrasion (yesterday).
The directional arrows are already beginning to wear away on the Paseo. But, I have a feeling that, with Phase 3, they’re no longer being enforced (not that they were ever really enforced).
I saw fresh fish along the way (ugly fresh fish); some guys doing a balancing act on an elastic band strung between two palm trees; and a masked dummy with a cigar sitting at a café table. But he was a real dummy (well, a fiberglass statue). He sits inside that café year-round not smoking his cigar. He’s been moved up front now and I thought the mask was a nice addition. You’ll notice the cafe patron in the yellow tank top watching him peevishly, just waiting for him to light up that stinky cigar.
Another interesting sight was the set of beach umbrellas alongside one of the chiringuitos. Unlike the different levels of elegance of the thatch umbrellas, these were really nothing more than hula skirts (modest hula skirts, with fabric liners). Hulabrellas!

ESTABA DE VUELTA EN LA oficina de la ortodoncista ayer por la tarde. Estoy intentando conseguir mis retenedores. No va bien. Personalmente, me gusta mi ortodoncista. Profesionalmente? Bueno, te contaré todo sobre eso otro día.
Mientras tanto, después de solo una semana en la Fase 2, pasamos a la Fase 3 junto con el 52 por ciento del país. Veremos cómo van las cosas con más libertad de movimiento y con más personas que vienen a la ciudad.
Lo único bueno que salió de mi visita al ortodoncista ayer fue mi caminata de 4 km (2.5 millas) a casa a lo largo de la playa. El día fue glorioso. El viento soplaba a veces pero no como el día de mi microdermoabrasión (ayer).
Las flechas direccionales ya comienzan a desgastarse en el Paseo. Pero, tengo la sensación de que, con la Fase 3, ya no se aplican (no es que realmente se apliquen).
Vi pescado fresco en el camino (pescado fresco feo); algunos chicos haciendo un acto de equilibrio en una banda elástica colgada entre dos palmeras; y un muñeco enmascarado con un puro, sentado en una mesa de café. Pero él era un verdadero muñeco (bueno, una estatua de fibra de vidrio). Se sienta dentro de ese café durante todo el año sin fumar su puro. Lo han movido al frente ahora y pensé que la mascarilla era una buena adición. Notarás que el patrón de la cafetería en la camiseta amarilla lo mira malhumorado, solo esperando que encienda ese puro apestoso.
Otra vista interesante fue el conjunto de sombrillas junto a uno de los chiringuitos. A diferencia de los niveles de elegancia de las sombrillas de paja, en realidad no eran más que faldas de hula (modestas, con forros de tela). ¡Hulabrillas!

Honing their skills on the tightrope…….could watch and learn and join in someday….maybe?
The dancers are all so solid looking……yet so flexible! What a workout routine this would be!

I really enjoyed that hula video. The last time we were in Maui, we attended an end-of-year concert by a local hula school (man, it went on for hours, LOL!). Like all dance schools everywhere, there were a gazillion girl students but only a handful of boy students learning the art. The young buff guys in this video obviously persevered into adulthood with their training.

I wonder how these traditional dances are perceived by teenagers. Most of these brilliant dancers/athletes didn’t suddenly take it on as adults.

Oh, the heat. My brother complained yesterday about the heat in NYC. It was 89. And as if that’s not hot enough 89 in NY feels a lot worse than it is. Today is pure sun, 80F, glorious. (Somehow I don’t think hula is good for sciatica, although maybe I never would have gotten it had a hula’d all my life.)
Yuck, those fish look creepy!!!!!!!! I only do shell fish and salmon.
Meanwhile, only one week in phase 2?!?!?! That was quick. Here the infection rate in the 26 states that opened with reopening phases a couple weeks ago, are already rising…and in some case the rates are the highest they have had yet throughout the whole pandemic. Last week it was only 6 or 7 states now this week it’s 26 states. And now it starts…….
Mistress Maddie:
I used to only do shellfish, but my tastes have grown. However, I don’t do whole fish, nor fish heads. If the eyes are looking at me, I can’t eat! I’m also turned off when I find bones… so I guess I’m still kind of picky.
The pandemic news from the States is a nightmare. We’ve had the heaviest restrictions and I’m grateful. I hope the easing of restrictions continues to go well here and I hope you stay well and safe. Not a proud time for the USA.
FISH HEADS?!?!?!?!?!?!?
Oh, Maddie: Yes, fish heads. I was thinking in general of how I have to see the head when they serve the fish whole (which I almost never do). But you’ll find fish heads in soup (well YOU and I won’t) and in other dishes.
We’re gonna head back to phase one probably because the numbers of cases are on the rise again.
America is stupid.

Yes, America looks very stupid from here. Unbelievable. At least your state is willing to reverse course. My concern is that everyone will just continue to plow forward and… “if they die, they die.” I think I’m going to head back out and enjoy this beautiful place again this afternoon. Still quiet around town. The Spanish vacationers haven’t yet arrived in droves. I wonder if many are waiting for July and August… I wonder what affect the lockdown has had on their work and spending money. A number of local places have already shuttered for good.
William and I should move to Spain. We love beaches, and it feels good on our old bodies. I have to agree with Bob and the Mistress B. The rates are rising again. We tried to venture out with phase 1 this weekend, but we are going to continue staying put, and do like we were doing. We enjoy our home and garden and can keep doing our walks, and doing take out and the grocery shopping, although they have gotten rid of the senior hour, so this will be interesting.

Well, from my personal experience of Andalucía, I couldn’t recommend it more.The news from the States is so frightening (and shameful). Although we’re getting out more now that we’re in our Phase 3 here, we do find ourselves preferring to just stay home. When I walk, I choose the quietest times in town and the least busy places. The beach has been a safe space and today it’s perfect. I might, however, hit the shopping center by train. It will be my first time on the train since lockdown. The shopping center is open-air (except, obviously, for the individual stores), so doesn’t sound too overwhelming.

That’s what we’d all look like if only we did the hula. Spoke with my brother yesterday afternoon NY time when Accuweather said it was 89 in NYC. He said it felt a lot hotter… and it probably was. You all really deserve a break!
That IS an ugly fish. What the heck is that thing? Love the guy (mannequin) smoking the cigar. I bet it does annoy people. LOL

I think it might be monkfish (rape in Spanish). However, if it is, it’s actually the prettiest one I’ve ever seen. It IS delicious, as long as they don’t serve it to me so it’s recognizable. I don’t know how many times I’ve done a double-take when I’ve seen that “guy” sitting at that cafe, but he looks even more realistic with the mask. I d
