Lockdown Day 94: On Route 66 / Encierro Día 94: En Ruta 66

La versión español está después de la versión inglés.

SINCE MOVING TO SPAIN NEARLY nine years ago, we’ve been surprised to discover how many people from around the world know about the American highway called Route 66, which “… winds from Chicago to L.A., almost 2,000 miles along the way.”

San Geraldo and I have crossed or traveled on many parts of Route 66, which really didn’t have much to say for itself other than a great song and a whole lot of history. But a dream many Europeans have is to visit the United States and ride a motorcycle along Route 66. So, of course, when my birthday rolled around today, I thought of the song and getting my kicks. Because… I’m 66!

It’s amazing what can happen when you’re not looking. And when you are.

.

.

Exactly 3 months shy of 66 years ago.
Exactamente 3 meses menos que hace 66 años.

    1. In norwegian we have a song called “Når man blir 66 da gjør man som man vil”
In english :When we reach 66 we do just what we want and nothing else ” 😊 😊 Wish I could be there and selebrate you 🥰🥰

      1. Elin:
I love that song. Will look it up on YouTube today AND will follow the advice. I’m only doing what I want today. I WISH WISH WISH we could celebrate together!

    2. Kathleen:
I’ve noticed that cafe. Of course, have never gone in. Wonder what the food is like.

  1. Oh my God. Also, HAPPY BIRTHDAY! (Also texted you). That has to count for something! Have a wonderful day!!! I wish we could celebrate with you!!! Huge hugs and kisses.

    1. Kathleen:
Such strange times. Hope we can celebrate everything again soon. We missed Pedro’s birthday, didn’t we?!?

  2. HAPPY BIRTHDAY! May you year be as joyful and smooth as the version in Spanish – LOVE IT!

  3. Looks like you are singing along with the Spanish group in the first video!!
    Have a wonderful day, Mitch!

      1. Mistress Maddie:
Well, that depends entirely on how he gets his kicks.

    1. Steve:
We’ve been through a number of towns on Route 66. Never thought much of it, although some were restored to cash in on the tourist trade. And, no, I would never take a motorcycle either.

  4. Very many HAPPY returns, Mitch. Clickety-click sure is one to celebrate in grand style. And you’ve changed by only the teeniest bit from photos up top.
Btw – Maybe you’re planning on great [and appropriate?] festivities for your 69th? I’ll check nearer the time. 🙂

    1. Raybeard:
I DO have some ideas for the 69th. Will keep you posted. I’ve now got the same hairline I had at 3 months.

      1. we’ll want to see all your photos on that day, Mitch – and I really do mean ALL!

  5. A very happy Birthday. Yes I too have driven the length of “66” not to do that but because from one time or the other it was the best way to go. I didn’t get any, “special,” kicks however.
    🙂
Thanks for sharing Spain with me. I feel like I live just down the beach from you.
    What’s on for birthday dinner?

    Tom and Dimi

    1. Tom:
I’ve only driven parts of Route 66, usually accidentally, and all in the western part of the country. Thank YOU for allowing me to share Spain with you. Heading out shortly to our favorite (unbelievably good) Italian restaurant. It’s less than 5 minutes away and opposite the beach like us. One of our homes away from home. I’m sure there will be stories and pictures tomorrow!

  6. Look at that fabulous face! I’ve said it before, you’ve always been cute but you get better looking as you season. I hope you enjoy(ed) your day. I have yet to hear a lousy version of this song. It’s one of my favorites. I am, however, quite partial to The Manhattan Transfer’s version.

  7. I too wish you a very Happy Birthday!🎂🌹🍦🎈🎉

And I hope you enjoy some earthly delights whatever they may be. I’m glad I got to see this before i leave tomorrow. My gifts of strippers should be their by tomorrow.!!!!!!

    1. Mistress Maddie:
No one has EVER sent me strippers… unless you’re sending me paint strippers! I will wait in the lobby for the arrival, so you’d better not be making this up. And they’d better keep their masks on.

  8. Happy 66th Birthday, Mitchell! I can recognize the “style” of baby photos from the 1950s a mile away! Funny how certain eras just all had their own ways of showcasing babies.

    1. Debra:
And now the baby photos always include a shot of the kid in a tin tub made up to look like its filled with bubble bath!

    1. Judith:
Thank you for sharing so many birthdays with me! Los 3 de la Habana are new for me. I’m hooked.

    1. Cheapchick:
We’re heading out shortly… and I’m looking forward to some chocolate!

  9. HBD and many happy returns of the day, Mitchell! Your hairline may be the same now, but I do believe you have a few more teeth these days. Great song, I’ll have to remember to listen to it for my 66th (in 8 months). Wonder what the world will be like then?

    1. Wilma:
So glad the teeth didn’t follow the hair. So strange to wonder about the world just a few months away. I hope it’s a place to celebrate.

    1. John:
Thanks so much. Just got home from a wonderful dinner with friends. Looking forward to sleeping peacefully. Wishing you the same.

  10. eeeeeee! you’re only 3 months older than I am! FELIZ CUMPLEANOS, AMIGO! hope SG and the cats did something nice for you today!

    1. anne marie:
And the way I figure things (usually in MY favor) that makes you an entire year younger than me right now.

    1. “from Perth”:
Thanks so much. Always a pleasure to see your smiling face!

    1. Walt the Fourth:
That’s the way to do it, each one better than the one before. Thanks!

  11. Happy Birthday!

My DH’s favorite place on Route 66 is the Cadillac Ranch. I remember the Route 66 TV show with Marty MIlner and George Maharis. Interesting to go to imbd website and scroll down the cast list to see just how many actors were in that show over the four year run. Ed Asner, Jack Warden, Robert Duvall, Patrick O’Neill, Suzanne Pleshette and on and on,..a veritable who’s who of actors of the day.

    1. Mary:
Now the Cadillac Ranch would be something worth seeing. I’ve never been there! I had a major crush on George Maharis as a result of Route 66. Maybe I’ll watch some episodes and see if I remember anything. I know I loved the show, although I was too young to understand it. It was all about George Maharis — and I was too young to understand that at the time, either.

  12. Happy birthday!

Route 66’a heyday was in the years prior to the Interstate Highway system. Blame Eisenhower if it’s no longer a big deal.

  13. OH NO!!! I missed your birthday yesterday! I’m sorry. Mitchell, I hope you had the best day ever! Many happy returns, my friend!
