SINCE MOVING TO SPAIN NEARLY nine years ago, we’ve been surprised to discover how many people from around the world know about the American highway called Route 66, which “… winds from Chicago to L.A., almost 2,000 miles along the way.”
San Geraldo and I have crossed or traveled on many parts of Route 66, which really didn’t have much to say for itself other than a great song and a whole lot of history. But a dream many Europeans have is to visit the United States and ride a motorcycle along Route 66. So, of course, when my birthday rolled around today, I thought of the song and getting my kicks. Because… I’m 66!
It’s amazing what can happen when you’re not looking. And when you are.

We’ve been through a number of towns on Route 66. Never thought much of it, although some were restored to cash in on the tourist trade. And, no, I would never take a motorcycle either.

I’ve only driven parts of Route 66, usually accidentally, and all in the western part of the country. Thank YOU for allowing me to share Spain with you. Heading out shortly to our favorite (unbelievably good) Italian restaurant. It’s less than 5 minutes away and opposite the beach like us. One of our homes away from home. I’m sure there will be stories and pictures tomorrow!

Happy 66th Birthday, Mitchell! I can recognize the “style” of baby photos from the 1950s a mile away! Funny how certain eras just all had their own ways of showcasing babies.

My DH’s favorite place on Route 66 is the Cadillac Ranch. I remember the Route 66 TV show with Marty MIlner and George Maharis. Interesting to go to imbd website and scroll down the cast list to see just how many actors were in that show over the four year run. Ed Asner, Jack Warden, Robert Duvall, Patrick O’Neill, Suzanne Pleshette and on and on,..a veritable who’s who of actors of the day.

Now the Cadillac Ranch would be something worth seeing. I’ve never been there! I had a major crush on George Maharis as a result of Route 66. Maybe I’ll watch some episodes and see if I remember anything. I know I loved the show, although I was too young to understand it. It was all about George Maharis — and I was too young to understand that at the time, either.
