I KNEW WHEN I WOKE up and decided to go back to sleep at 7 this morning that I’d regret it. The next time would be late and to the sounds of the cats. Moose doesn’t like when I sleep in. For Dudo, it’s simply getting close to his treat time (you know, the treats they’re supposed to be served at 2 in the afternoon).
So around 9:40 I awoke to Moose’s yowls from the foot of the bed. Dudo sat at the door giving me the death stare. I also knew if I went back to sleep I’d wake up too late to go for my morning walk on the beach. First, the day trippers (or as a childhood friend who lived on the beach used to call them, “the down-for-the-dayers”) would be arriving making it less pleasant for a quiet walk. Second, the sun would be fully up. It’s been hot in recent days. Yesterday hit about 36C (96F).
So, at 10:30 — after giving the cats their treats so Moose would shut up and Dudo would stop staring — instead of walking on the beach, I stood on the terrace in my shadow world.
I love what I discover in the shadows.

SABÍA CUANDO DESPERTÉ Y DECIDÍ a dormir a las 7 de esta mañana que me arrepentiría. La próxima vez sería tarde y al sonido de los gatos. A Moose no le gusta cuando duermo. Para Dudo, simplemente se está acercando a su tiempo de golosinas (ya sabes, los dulces que se supone que deben servirse a las 2 de la tarde).

Ooh, those cats. I love them but they really got on my nerves this morning. I didn’t cave. I DID, however, pop my cork. I so enjoy the shadow shots. I was excited to take more today, but it’s completely overcast. Not a shadow in sight… And now the suns too high for good shots anyway.

Yeah, I noticed when I snapped that picture that he actually had pretty great everything… but, yes, those thighs.
Your artistry creates something very special from typical, candid street scenes. It draws us in to look at details that we might otherwise skip over. Like how the wheels of the skateboard contact the pavement just so and the beautiful geometry of walking sticks and their shadows. Not to mention those thighs that David pointed out (although I probably would have noticed those in any event). The shadow minion is perfect. I am going to check today to see if I have one.

Thanks! At first, I simply liked the shadows. Then I thought they would be even more interesting (and confusing) if they were turned. And THEN I decided black and white would really enhance the effect. I love doing these. Was in the mood to snap more photos today, but it’s so overcast there are no shadows.
Like very much your idea of giving shadows the main emphasis, something we rarely give attention to.
One week from today marks the third anniversary of the demise of my very, very dear and most affectionate Blackso [the First] who’d try to wake me most mornings – and did – by licking my sleeping eyes as if trying to force my eyelids up. Now when I sleep too long for his liking, Blackso II comes up and keeps rubbng against me anywhere to distraction until I there’s no alternative but to give in.

Blackso was such a sweetheart. Can’t believe it’s already been three years. Time flies when you’re no longer 7 years old. I’m grateful our cats don’t lick me. (I know where those tongues have been!) They can sometimes lick SG for 20 minutes. None of our cats have ever found me very tasty. Dudo DOES head butt me. But they mostly just meow at me until they’re yowling — although Dudo is much more subtle. Moose could meow and yowl for hours at a time. We’ve tried to let him just get bored but he doesn’t. Dudo does — after 30 minutes or so.
See, I see something different than everybody else. These are creepy, though artistic, like old science fiction movies. Some alien lifeforms have taken over the bodies of the Earthling fashionistas, while searching for the suddenly missing plaid and crocs crowd. You can tell the possessed people by their strange shadows, if you look closely enough. It’s the perfect black & white B movie from the fifties! My eyes are very fuzzy today, but did I see a minion? He must’ve wandered into the wrong movie 🙂
You have a nice artistic bent, Scoot, and a wonderful touch with a camera.

Thank you! They CAN be very creepy I think. You can see so many different things in them. The banner is my first photo of a shadow dog. That’s going to be a new theme. I love the way that came out.

It’s pretty great when you can take interesting pictures without even having to leave your terrace. I love the one with the bench and the skateboarder. It’s intriguing — there’s a lot to notice in that photo.
I wish to God I could sleep until 7 a.m. But no! The dog has me up at 5:20 every freakin’ day!

Yes, it’s great to be able to stand right here on the terrace. Couldn’t even get these photos from down below. I also love the bench and skateboarder. I’m going to start doing more scenes. I love how it looks like the shadow trees are actually planted.
