FRIDAY AFTERNOON, SAN GERALDO SAID he was going to the market for a few things. “Should I pick up some ice cream for dessert?” Now, admittedly, I do at times decline an ice cream out, which really annoys SG. But, some Ben & Jerry’s at home? How could I say ‘no’ to that?
SG knows my taste, so choosing is up to him. After he left, I began fantasizing about two of my favorite Ben & Jerry’s flavors that I haven’t seen here in town, New York Super Fudge Chunk and Chunky Monkey. I love textures. San Geraldo returned home with Chunky Monkey for me. He really is the answer to my prayers. I had Chunky Monkey Friday and Saturday night.
Sunday afternoon, SG told me he was thinking of baking a chocolate cake. He asked, “Does that sound like a good idea?” Isn’t that a rhetorical question? He thought he had all the ingredients. It turned out he lacked one. The cake would have to wait until Monday.
For dessert that night we had wedges of Santa Claus melon, known here as piel de sapo (toadskin) topped by two greengage plums (commonly known here as Claudias). He didn’t get around to baking the cake Monday either. We had more melon and plums. I’m not suffering. Although I do still have a stiff neck, sore hand, and an achy body that feels well over … ahem… 40.
I think today will finally be chocolate cake day. Meanwhile, here are the desserts and some backstreet sights from my walk Saturday — before I jumped.

VIERNES POR LA TARDE, SAN Geraldo dijo que iba al mercado por algunas cosas. “¿Debo recoger un helado para el postre?” Ahora, lo admito, a veces rechazo un helado, lo que realmente molesta a SG. Pero, ¿Ben y Jerry en casa? ¿Cómo podría decir ‘no’ a eso?
Él conoce mi gusto, así que elegir depende de él. Después de que se fue, comencé a fantasear con dos de mis sabores favoritos de Ben y Jerry que no he visto aquí en la ciudad, New York Super Fudge Chunk y Chunky Monkey. Amo las texturas. San Geraldo regresó a casa con Chunky Monkey para mí. Él realmente es la respuesta a mis oraciones. Tuve Chunky Monkey el viernes y el sábado por la noche.
El domingo por la tarde, SG me dijo que estaba pensando en hornear una tarta de chocolate. Él preguntó: “¿Suena como una buena idea?” ¿No es una pregunta retórica? Pensó que tenía todos los ingredientes. Resultó que le faltaba uno. La tarta tendría que esperar hasta el lunes.
Para el postre esa noche tuvimos trozos de melón piel de sapo coronado por dos ciruelas Claudias. Tampoco llegó a hornear el pastel el lunes. Teníamos más melón y ciruelas. No estoy sufriendo. Aunque todavía tengo rigidez en el cuello, dolor en las manos, y un cuerpo adolorido que se siente bien … ejem … 40.
Creo que hoy finalmente será el día de la tarta de chocolate. Mientras tanto, aquí están los postres y algunas vistas callejeras de mi caminata el sábado, antes de saltar.

It was SO good. I’ve tried to cut back to making the pint last for three sittings. No way with this. Half one day. Half the next. Now, if only New York Super Fudge Chunk or Rocky Road would appear. Of course, I can probably find Rocky Road at one of our artisan ice cream shops. There’s at least one on every corner. Dangerous.
nope, the pint is gone in ONE sitting at my house.

The ‘back streets’ remind me of parts of Venezuela. Must have been high noon as not many people around?

It was towards the end of siesta. The back streets are always fairly quiet, though. SG is about to head into the kitchen to bake that cake!
I do believe B & J’s (LOL) are available north of the border (49th pararallell ~ as we sometimes refer to it) !

Locally I like “Grapenut” (yes, grapenuts ~ this flavour was invented 100 years ago in the Town of Wolfville by a lady who owned Young’s Restaurant ~ she mixed grapenuts with vanilla ice cream and there you have! 100 years later I have a smile on my face!
If not available I choose “Hoof Prints” with chocolate cup chunks etc!

Yeah, it’s good they included that ampersand! Grapenuts ice cream sounds so good. I love crunch in ice cream. Ben & Jerry favorites other than Chunky Monkey: New York Super Fudge Chunk, Chocolate Fudge Brownie, Phish Food, Cherry Garcia… I’m sure I have others, but I can’t think of them right now.
Chunky Monkey is one of my favorites too, Cherry Garcia being the other. Balder Half limits me to three spoons a sitting. This is to prevent me from eating the whole pint in fifteen minutes, thus sky rocketing my glucose levels. It’s so worth it though!
That is one creepy looking melon! It looks like a watermelon that’s been antiqued like some furniture 🙂

Ooh, how could I forget Cherry Garcia?!? That was my favorite for a long time. And, yep, I could eat the whole pint, as well. We try to spread our pints over three servings. This most recent only made it for two. The toadskin melon is delicious. It originated here and keeps something like 6 weeks longer than the usual melon. And it’s so sweet and mild, similar to honeydews… only better.
Glad you are on the mend. Ben and Jerry’s is such a great treat! And you can get it in Spain! I actually looked on a map where Malaga is…you are way down there in the south. I thought it would be hotter than from what you’ve described..

In Sevilla, there was even a Ben & Jerry’s ice cream kiosk. We never stopped there because we had an incredible gourmet, artesan ice cream shop we went to many times a week. All freshly made on premises. Amazing unusual flavors. We chose this are to live because the climate is … well, Mediterranean. Rarely too hot and rarely too cold. Similar to San Diego. Just a half hour north and the temps rise. Sevilla (an hour and half north) could be very unpleasant in summer and came close to shutting down for the month of August.
Sounds like a perfect place to live!

I remember years ago visiting the B&J headquarters in Vermont…then standing in line for ages trying to decide what to sample at the end of the tour. Decisions!

Visiting their headquarters would be fun. We’ve actually got a little ice cream maker in a pueblo just above us (10 minute drive) where you can make your own ice cream. One of these days, I’ll try that. Still sore, but not bad. More stiff than anything else. Thanks

Actually, for me, melons and plums CAN compete… They just can’t replace. SG is finally in the kitchen baking that cake!
I am THAT person. I don’t care for ice cream and don’t really enjoy chocolate.
Your fruit desserts looks good, though. I have been having Georgia Peaches and Washington Cherries for dessert lately and I love it!

Although I’m stunned that someone I respect and admire so much doesn’t like ice cream or chocolate, I’ll get over it. Sometimes those fruit desserts are better than anything else. Georgia peaches!!!

Never heard of ‘Chunky Monkey’ but now I’m aware of it it’s gone straight to my #2. Would have to be something really exceptional to oust my fave, VANILLA [yes, really] at the very top. Actually I’ve never ever had ANY Ben & Jerry. (Didn’t they used to feature in cartoons?) 😉

You’re thinking of the cartoon, Tom & Jerry (a Tom cat and a mouse). I wonder if you’d like Chunky Monkey given that your fave is currently vanilla. This is a bit out there: banana ice cream with fudge chunks and walnuts.
Yes, I’m well aware of the T&J cartoon. My ‘winkie’ wasn’t strong enough and thus the ‘joke’ fell flat.
Of course I still would try the Chunky Monkey – nothing ventured……etc.

My hat is off to you. I have yet like one flavor of ice cream I’ve had from Ben and Jerry’s. I prefer a small ice cream joint or certain other brands first. B&J’s I think it’s too hard. Wait did I just say that.? But I did however enjoy the pictures of the street scene. You know that isn’t in the US. Just look at how clean everything is and the street is immaculate.

We do have to give lots of credit to the city workers (and the city) for keeping the streets so clean. It’s always a pleasure.

Ah yes, the Santa Claus aka toadskin melon. I prefer the toadskin name, I must say. Much more colorful and interesting.
For some reason the only kinds of Ben & Jerry’s I can ever find here in the UK are Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough, Chocolate Fudge Brownie and Phish Food. Which I like, but what about all the other B&J flavors?!

It sounds like we have more Ben & Jerry’s options here. I’m not a fan of cookie dough ice creams of any kind; Chocolate Fudge Brownie is OK by me. I DO like Phish Food. But I really love the crunchy, mixed-up flavors.

I had never noticed the dripping chocolate sauce (or even the spoons) before. I loved it, too. There are a lot of ice cream shops around town. More and more all the time. I don’t know how they all survive. The ones on the paseo (across from the beach) certainly have an edge on these others.
I don’t think the new owners of Ben and Jerry, they retired, are using monkeys anymore to make the ice cream. They were getting too fat eating the product. LOL!

I’m appreciating the back streets more right now. They’re always quiet and I can enjoy a walk without a lot of people. Of course, at that time of day if anyone is out they’re probably at the beach.
I don’t believe I’ve ever experienced Chunky Monkey. I’m a rather boring ice cream-ist. Vanilla is my favorite flavor, followed by coconut. I don’t like chocolate ice cream at all. I hope we can still be friends.

No problem. You stick to vanilla; that leaves more textured mixtures for me. I like vanilla… but with something else… like chocolate!
