Jack Sprat

La versión en español está después de la versión en inglés.

SAN GERALDO AND I ARE a study in contrasts, although those contrasts are not quite as extreme as they used to be. Still, he sleeps in a T-shirt under a comforter; I sleep in nothing and under nothing. He enjoys food he can eat with his fingers, like fried chicken and corn on the cob; I use a knife and fork for the chicken and little holders for my corn. I love all nuts; he loathes most of them. He likes his bread darkly toasted (nearly burnt); I prefer mine barely warmed.

We went to El Corte Inglés, the department store, yesterday to pick up some things. We love having lunch at their upstairs restaurant. We both had their “Sandwich Cortty,” which they’ve been serving since 1970 — three layers of bread, chicken, bacon, tomato, lettuce, and fried egg — and they did them perfectly — more toasted for SG and less toasted for me. For some reason, I always think of the nursery rhyme, Jack Sprat, when we order toast.

I learned the reason that loggerhead turtle laid her 73 eggs on our beach (click here). These turtles traditionally nest on Cape Verde, in the central Atlantic off the west coast of Africa, but have been nesting further north thanks to global warming. Sea turtles tend to return to nest where they themselves were born.

I slept until 9 this morning (when Moose started yowling for me to get up), so I missed my walk/run on the beach. I also missed the little rain we had overnight after a dramatic lightning storm before we went to bed.

So, here are our Cortty sandwiches plus some shots of the hibiscus on our terrace, a view of Dudo from the street the other day, and a fishing boat I saw before I went back to bed at 5:45 this morning (which is why I then slept until 9). The photo above is the fishing boat with a great big zoom and shake (the zoom was intentional, the shake was not).

.

Of course, I put the lid back on the egg before I ate it — with a knife and fork.
Por supuesto, volví a poner la tapa al huevo antes de comerlo, con cuchillo y tenedor.

.

NOTE:
I always assumed from the nursery rhyme that Jack Sprat’s wife, who could eat no lean, survived on scones with clotted cream, cakes, sweets, and fried foods. This “contemporary child-friendly” version has her preferring vegetables. Oh, please! (And then there’s Jack eating fried chicken.)
NOTA:

  1. I was all ready with Beckett to walk this morning at 715 and there was a thunderstorm! Lightning, thunder and a little rain! So you did the right thing sleeping! Wish I could have gone back to bed! Love sleeping with thunderstorms. The sandwich looks great! I forgot they had a restaurant Up there. Was it empty?

    1. Kathleen:
I would have loved to have been out in that thunderstorm! The restaurant had customers but it’s managed better than anyplace we’ve seen. They didn’t remove tables, but they’ve blocked every other one from seating. One of the sides of our 4-seater was blocked because it would otherwise have required people to pass within a few feet of us. So there is no one anywhere near you. They also have individually packaged condiments that they bring to the table once you’ve ordered, and even the silverware and napkins are now packaged (and sealed) individually. VERY impressive and very reassuring. If you do want to enjoy a meal out, this is the place.

    1. David:
I thought about that for a moment and the answer is “usually” in both cases. A McDonalds or Burker King burger is done with the hands and so are the fries. But in restaurants, yeah, except for a random fry grab, it’s with a fork.

    1. Frank:
I had never even heard of these until we moved down to Fuengirola. A nearby hotel used to have them, too. I do loving being able to see the sea, but desert views can be pretty spectacular, too… in summer as long as you’re soaking in the pool!

  2. It appears that a lot of different species are venturing north due to climate change. We (Nova Scotia that is) has two great white sharks that have been visiting our shores for the summers the last fews years. Our waters are warmer and they are hunting grey seals.
    Good morning you beautiful hibiscuses!
Your shaking fishing boat is very interesting.
Oh….I would LOVE to try one of those sandwiches. I like my eggs well done and toast medium. Thanks. lol

    1. Jim:
We just read about a Great White attack off the coast of Maine and were stunned. When we decide to go there for lunch, my mouth starts watering at the thought of that sandwich. I rarely have a sandwich and rarely have chips or crisps (oh, those British), so it’s major treat. I tried other things on the menu because I hate being predictable, but I finally gave in to myself and now stick with the Cortty.

  3. I wondered what was the object in the first pix. dudo sure has a great life. lightly toasted, eaten with fingers, scrambled eggs only. unless it’s a really messy/drippy concoction, then it’s knife and fork.

    1. anne marie:
I have never been a finger-food person. It’s funny how early that shows up. Apparently Luke will change his shirt if he gets a drop of water on it. Beckett bathes in his food (it’s disgusting) and is perfectly happy (Luke finds it disgusting, too). I used to only eat eggs that were scrambled or hard boiled. Now, I love them every way but soft-boiled. I actually thought yesterday of buying the cats a tall condo for my office. I mean, they only have two… and a sofa and wing chairs, and four dining room chairs, and our bed, and storage containers lined with blankets (for them), and special rugs… SO, given that I’ve been trying to clear more space in my office so I can more comfortably work out in here, I decided the cats have enough… for now.

  4. Yeah, what’s the point of a HEALTHY version of Jack Sprat?!

It’s good to have minor differences so you can introduce your partner to new things. Don’t you think? I usually sleep under a sheet, at least, but not this week because it’s been so bloody hot.

    1. Steve:
When I watched the video, I thought, “Well, they’ve missed the entire point.” Of course, when I was a kid, Jack was always pictured as a skinny little guy and his wife, Joan (yeah, that’s really her name), was a big round woman. And that wasn’t very kind. Still, they didn’t have to make her fat; they simply could have made the food make more sense. We have all the windows open and there’s a glorious breeze blowing through the apartment. But it’s getting hot and humid again when you walk outside. I’ve had enough of summer (for so many reasons) and I love summer.

  5. Carlos sleeps in shirt, shorts socks, under a sheet, and comforter, with a pillow and a folded blanket across his feet ….in the summertime.
I sleep in shorts with nothing on top of me except Tuxedo, who likes to sleep on me.
Carlos likes bread barely toasted, I like mine looking like toast.
Carlos eats pizza with his hands :::gasp::::while I use a fork and knife.
Carlos likes food lukewarm, even soup, and I like my food hot … unless it’s a salad.

    Ah differences.

I’d have the SG Sandwich Cortty, while he’d have the Mitchell version!

    1. Bob:
I would sweat just looking at Carlos. Dudo lately wants a daily siesta (sometimes I accommodate) and to go to bed with me at night. THAT requires a folded up comforter on my lap. I melt for a half hour to an hour and then I push him to my side.

    1. Debra:
The hibiscus are so uplifting. They’re worth all the trouble (to me) SG has to maintain them. Bugs, etc. And, yeah, Dudo has a beautiful face. (Our niece-in-law described it as Kate Moss.)

  6. I’m like you, I sleep in very little, and in the summer, I might put a light sheet over me, but that’s it. The food looks so good, and I love the flower pictures. You truly do have a great view!

    1. mcpersonalspace54:
The view and location really are amazing. We often take it for granted but not especially not in recent months.

  7. There is a certain magic to that first zoomed and shaky image. I like to eat things that I can pick up with my hands without making a mess and I like my toast very toasty and crisp. Not sure if I could eat that sandwich with my hands, but it would get eaten one way or another!

    1. Wilma:
I love that first shot. When I downloaded the photos, I started to delete the blurry ones, but I stopped on that. It would make a great painting I think. I don’t know if that sandwich is even intended to be eaten with one’s hands, but I’d never even attempt it. The toast SG got that day was OK for him but he prefers it charred.

  8. That sandwich is so cute! I’ve never seen one with a cut out. Toast should be toast, not warmed up bread or charcoal, but to each their own. Love the hibiscuses. As far as sleeping, I’m with you Scoot. Balder is a hot house plant like SG. He also tried to get me to eat a grilled cheese sammich with a knife and fork the first time he took me out. I’m quiet and shy (shut up!) but I had to put my foot down there!
Side bar to Bobulah, eating pizza with a fork should be considered a mortal sin!

      1. Mistress Maddie:
Well, if I think about it, it’s no surprise… except for that blanket statement “I hate being dirty.”

    1. Deedles
We had never seen that sandwich until we moved to Fuengirola. It’s SO good. I used to like club sandwiches; I prefer this. So, if the three of us went out for lunch there would be a sandwich for each of us no matter how the kitchen screwed up. Even I eat grilled cheese with my fingers… well, usually. Eating pizza with a fork in the City of New York IS a mortal sin. I don’t know if you saw Covidiot-45 (before he was Covidiot-45) and Sarah Palin dot just that. Oh the shit they got.

      1. The thing with BH is he eats with his fingers most of the time. It was my first time being at a restaurant (well Denny’s) and I think, looking back, he didn’t want to be embarrassed by me eating with my toes or something. We were young.
As a general rule, I try not to pay attention to idiots of any kind, no matter their number. I figure, if you’re going to have a grating voice, at least have some intelligence to offset it! I think I’m going to hibernate for awhile.

      2. Deedles,
You always make my days brighter, dear Deedles. BH is a lucky man! I think I might hibernate this afternoon.

  9. Al my I love all the pretty flowers!!!!! So color!!!! And I can see why you love that sandwich!!!

I have not been in a store since march of any kind, except for a market or grocery., and the one trip to the vintage marketplace. That’s got to be a record for me.

    1. Mistress Maddie:
I’ve been shopping a few times. This was my first time in the department store. That was the most pleasant and relaxing experience. They have really managed everything beautifully.

    1. John:
One of these days, this will all be a memory and you’ll be back to enjoying Spanish colors.

    1. Walt the Fourth:
It DOES get too hot. We could entirely open the glass curtain to get better circulation, but then Dudo would sneak up on the wall and go visit the neighbors. So we usually just have one panel open and then space out the rest. It helps but in these recently hot and humid weeks, not many people are sitting for long on their terraces. There’s a nice breeze today through the entire apartment, so it’s all been really pleasant.
