Mitch in Kitchen / Mitch en Cocina

IT’S CALLED THE FIT CHOCOLATE Protein Muffin and it’s from Nutriandfitness in Buenos Aires, Argentina. According to the recipe, only two ingredients are required: protein powder and egg. It says to add sweetener to taste. In my book, that’s three ingredients. But if you read further, you’ll find that it’s one scoop of protein, one egg and one egg white — and sweeten to taste. I don’t know about you, but I’m up to four ingredients. However, the recipe looked so simple and healthy that I thought I’d give it a try.

Per the instructions, I stirred up the egg and the egg white for 30 seconds. (Yes, I actually know how to separate eggs and I do so quite artfully.) Then I slowly added the protein powder, stirring for a minute. It was lumpy but I did what I could. Chocolate protein powder was recommended. I have cocoa. And although my protein powder is not brown, I figured the flavour would be fine. Once it was all mixed together, I put it in the microwave for a minute.

As you can see from the photos, it didn’t look anything like the sample, nor did it look like anything anyone would eat. I tried it. It was like chewing a 100-year-old gummy bear, only worse and with less flavour. I tossed it. I have no idea what I could have possibly done wrong, but I figure it has to be me and not the recipe.

Buenos Aires is in the Southern Hemisphere. Maybe I was supposed to stir in the opposite direction.

  1. Oh boy! The packaged photo looks like it would move on its own……like a ‘live’ sponge.
Hey, good try! And you’re correct it was all the fault of the recipe!!
But don’t give up…..there is one recipe just for you!……somewhere.

    1. Jim:
I’m really in the mood to bake. Will look for REAL muffin recipes with protein. That original pic looked bore no resemblance to a muffin. I’ll also look for Northern Hemisphere recipes… just in case.

    2. That’s so funny. Reminds me of my first attempt at making “healthy bagels” from Greek-style fat free plain yogurt, flour and baking powder/soda. They were vile.

      1. Carole:
A friend of mine once made traditional bagels. They were so hard, he hammered one on his plate and the plate broke.

  2. Hmm, it looks like you did your part, maybe this is like the grandmother who leaves out the key ingredient when sharing a recipe. Would the cats eat it?

    1. David:
Hah! The cats would run as fast as they could if I offered it to them. They’re no dummies. Interestingly, they have absolutely no interest anymore in people food. Well, maybe a little interest. We’re regularly finding paw prints on the stove.

  3. ewwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww! looks disgusting! you are better off with making/eating my balls!

    1. anne marie:
I’ve still got your balls in the fridge, but I’m running low. Maybe I’ll just mix up another batch and forget “baking.”

    1. Debra:
I thought theirs looked like, come to think of it, Cocoa Krispys. Don’t know how that could happen with those ingredients.

  4. What you did wrong, Scoot honey, was to walk into the kitchen with a purpose other than cleaning. I’m with Debra on the unappetizing muffin.

    1. Deedles:
You hit the nail right on the head. But, I am oddly in the mood to bake. Of course, I had a Coca Cola craving for two days. It passed. And an Oreo craving for two days. It passed. OK, I satisfied both cravings. But, maybe this will have satisfied my baking craving. And, yeah, their pic looked nothing like a muffin.

      1. No, sweetie, no! There’s a cabinet door with your forehead’s or shin’s name on it! Back away from the kitchen! No muffin is worth risking an injury, especially a “healthy” muffin! The weather has been in the triple digits for days now. Baking anything is the farthest/furthest thing from my mind.

      2. Deedles:
Well, I DO have to make another batch of anne marie’s balls. SG loves them and we’re running low.

  5. The photo with the recipe doesn’t look at all appetizing to me. Yours looks more like a crepe. A crepe waiting to be filled with sweet goodness. On second thought, just eat the filling and forget the “crepe”!

    1. Wilma:
Their photo looked to me like an odd Rice Krispy square. I should have just squirted the agave nectar right into my mouth.

  6. Hmmmm… If I had to hazard a guess – and what do I know – I’d say adding the cocoa messed up the chemistry with the protein powder. Protein can be a very fussy substance, and since the recipe is just the powder and eggs, even the agave might have thrown things off.

    1. wicked hamster:
I wasn’t very clear. The cocoa was cocoa flavoured protein powder. You may be right about the agave nectar, though. They were probably talking about Equal or Splenda or something like that. Still, I don’t know how this could have been anything like a muffin.

      1. anonymous wickedhamster:
When I first saw the picture, I thought so. I should have known better.

  7. You made me laugh out loud with your “100-year-old gummy bear” description. I gotta say, though, that even the sample picture doesn’t look all that appetizing.

    1. Steve:
I couldn’t think of how to describe it. Even that was complimentary. I thought the sample picture look like an odd rice crispy square, but definitely not like a muffin.

    1. TexasTrailerParkTrash:
For some reason, I’m in the mood to bake. Signs of dementia?

  8. I would have sealed that thing in a plastic bag, driven 70 miles outside of town, and buried in the dirt six feet down.
    It’s kind of alien-esque.
And that’s what you get for trying to “cook.”

    1. Bob:
Well, I still haven’t learned my lesson. I’m looking for other protein muffin recipes. I should check our recipe box. I used to make them in San Diego (YES I DID) and was very successful…. except for the time I forgot to add the protein powder.

  9. I don’t think either photo looks appetizing. And you’re correct in thinking that you’re supposed to stir in the opposite direction.

    Love,
    Janie

    1. janiejunebug:
I’m sure you’re supposed to adjust cooking times, too. Maybe I was supposed to microwave for MINUS one minute.

    1. Walt the Fourth:
I just tried rolling my eyes in both directions (not simultaneously) and was surprised I could do it. Now I feel sick.

    1. mcpersonalspace54:
OK, more balls today. But I’m not done cooking. THIS has inspired me… to see what disasters I can create.
