With sea buckthorn / Con espino marino

I HAD THE GREATEST WALK Thursday afternoon and evening. I decided to go out for a random roam around town. I walked for three hours, more than 9 km (6 miles). And that doesn’t include the amount of walking I did through the several shops I stopped at along the way, including the ground floor of El Corte Ingles; Kiabi Pet Supplies; Akí — like Home Depot in the USA or B and Q in the UK; JYSK, Danish furniture and home furnishings; and Decathlon Sporting Goods, where I got myself some gym socks and a couple of pieces of pilates exercise equipment. I don’t do pilates, but I can still use the equipment.

I found new toys for the cats. I even stopped and made an appointment with the podiatrist to have the pep in my step, or maybe it’s the dip in my hip, evaluated (click here). I returned home feeling great, elated, energised. Happy. San Geraldo cooked another delicious and healthy dinner, with toad skin melon and Claudia (greengage) plums for dessert. I knew I would sleep well.

I was wrong. I slept fitfully. My mood, though, was fine Friday morning although I didn’t go for another walk; I figured I would work out in the afternoon. But then I crashed before lunch. I never left the house. I spent four hours in bed, sleeping for only one of those hours.

At 7:00 in the evening I felt suddenly revitalised. I played with the cats. I made up another batch of Anne Marie’s balls (click here). While I “cooked” Dudo again sat outside the kitchen door staring incredulously at me. Moose had decided to nap. I finally gave Dudo one of the new chewy fish-shaped, duck-flavored (with sea buckthorn) treats I had purchased. That woke Moose up, but it didn’t turn him on, so Dudo got two. I was going to make up another batch of Susan’s overnight oats (click here), but that would require me to go to the market for more yogurt.

Oh, and just now, I shook out a couple of Liquorice Allsorts from a small bag I picked up the other day. Only I opened the wrong bag and shook out several fish-shaped, duck-flavored (with sea buckthorn) cat treats. They made it almost to my lips before I realized my mistake.

I looked up sea buckthorn. It’s thought by some to have a variety of health benefits, including fighting depression. Still, I’ll save the treats for Dudo.

One more thing: Sea Buckthorn in Spanish is Espino Marino. The beginnings of a drag name, I think, or maybe a lounge act.

And still another thing (so I lied): Licorice Allsorts burps are not pleasant.

The agaves are almost dead (well new ones have started) and the flowers are long gone.
A common look of homes in Fuengirola.

El Corte Inglés. The ground and upper floors are the department store itself. Basement level is Hipercor, a hyped up supermarket, discount department store, appliances, computing, furniture. You name it.
Tu dilo.
Dudo breaks in a new pad. I put these in the bottom of their hammocks.
Slightly higher end fuzzy toys are of passing interest.
But the cheap faux fur mouse is still the best. And Dudo loves to share it with me.
I’m holding this one back for now. Don’t tell the cats.
Estoy reteniendo este por ahora. No se lo digas a los gatos.
Yes, Dudo. Even though I’m not washing dishes, I’m still allowed to be in here by myself.
Sí, Dudo. Aunque no estoy lavando platos, todavía se me permite estar aquí solo.

  1. That sounded like a great excursion! A mini Christmas spree!
We have a Decathlon opening up very soon here…….looking forward to it. Some competition is always good, I say.

    1. Jim:
I’ve found some great clothes at Decathlon, in addition to supplies. I love sporting goods stores as much as I love hardware stores. I could spend hours.

  2. I imagine your mind was racing from an over-stimulated walk.

    Or the kitchen time.

    Or the Dudo Treat.

Or the near miss of eating a Cat Treat!

    It’s too much!

  3. Sounds like a delightful walk, so many fun places within walking distance. Let us know how the cat treats taste if you ever make that slip.

    1. David:
The treats actually don’t smell so bad. Dudo loves them. It WAS a delightful walk. Saturday was a good day and I was able to rediscover that feeling.

  4. I LOVE LICORICE ALLSORTS! it’s the brit in me.
I also love seeing pix of your village and reading the signs to figure out what is sold in the shops.
don’t eat the cat treats. and my girls like those cheap furry mice the best.

    1. anne marie:
I love Licorice Allsorts, too. I’ve been having odd cravings lately and I’m SURE I’m not pregnant. Pizza, Oreos, cola, licorice, your balls! Normally, it’s chocolate. The other treats the cats love are those mice made of cord wrapped around a plastic core. I have a couple more stashed as a surprise one day. Right now, they probably have 2 dozen toys out and about. Maybe time to toss or store some.

    1. Wilma:
I need to get out earlier and walk up to the castle (and to the ramparts). These walks are a life saver! So far, these cats haven’t been thrilled with the fishing toys. I’ve had to cut them from the “rods.” I’m hoping this one will be different, especially since they prefer when I play WITH them.

  5. HRH was crazy for those little faux-fur mice too. She’d beat up on them for hours.

    1. Debra:
It’s odd to hear Dudo and Moose chewing into the plastic. It sounds like they’re crunching bones. And I’m glad that has NEVER happened in our house.

  6. Coming to a theater near you! Pussies Treat! Starring Sea Buckthorn and Espino Marino! I really don’t know why my mind went there, Scoot. Too much heat, smoke and lack of sleep. Yeah, that’s the ticket!

    1. Deedles:
      C. Buckthorn. or Cee Cee Buckthorn. I love it! And, oh please, you KNOW why your mind went there. Your mind ALWAYS goes there. Sending smoke-free hugs your way!

  7. It’s amazing how much good a walk can do. I always feel a million times better on days when I walk. I remember El Corte Ingles from my visit to Madrid in 1994 — I bought some clothes there, in fact. You would have had quite a surprise if you’d put that cat treat in your mouth!

    1. Steve:
I love the walks you take. I’d be doing the same thing if I lived where you do. And, yes, I WOULD have had quite a surprise!

  8. Dudo’s little curled up paws in the picture of him on the rug….too cute!

As to Licorice….no, no, no, just say NO! Ugh!! I do NOT like the stuff. The cat treats were probably better. 🙂

    1. Jennifer:
Dudo gets into the sweetest (coyest) poses. Moose just rolls over on his back and spreads.

No worries about the licorice. I’ll eat yours. I LOVE it… and actually had a craving. I bought the Allsorts because I couldn’t find the traditional kind I wanted that day and there were too many risky “gourmet” versions.

    1. mcpersonalspace54:
Licorice is something that sets off strong reactions. I LOVE it. But I know a lot of people that shiver at the mention of it. I have always been a walker. I used to solitary walks through Manhattan for entire days. I’m thinking of taking the train into Málaga this week and wandering the streets.

      1. mcpersonalspace54:
I agree. Just had another great one this afternoon. I’m still feeling the affects.

    1. Urspo:
When we lived in Palm Springs, temps above 110F usually meant some work and then regular dips in the pool. At 100F, I would go for a long walk. Couldn’t do that now. I’ve been in kinder climates for too long.

  9. Boy, would I like to get Bert interested in cheap little fuzzy fake mice. I’m tired of the live ones he brings home every day. He plays with them a little before eating them. Head first. Sometimes one gets away, but eventually he gets it. Often, he leaves one of the internal organs on the floor. I’m betting it doesn’t taste anything like sea buckthorn.

    1. Walt the Fourth:
If Dudo and Moose were outdoor cats, we would have constant gifts. Especially from Dudo. I am so glad all they get are the fake ones. Dudo caught a bird one day on the terrace. I got it from him (he shared it with me, I think) before he bit into it (although it WAS dead). I would look at him and find him really creepy for days after.
