I FORGOT TO MENTION YESTERDAY that I was fitted for custom orthotics (shoe inserts), which I’ll have in 10 to 14 days. Those are intended to alleviate the shock waves when my heel hits the ground. The physiotherapist next week is intended to help with the current sciatica, which hasn’t been too bad lately.
The possibility of rain in recent days has been between 1 and 3 percent. It spit for half a minute yesterday morning. We missed it but the spots in the dust on the glass curtain are proof. I keep hoping for a downpour that I can go for a walk in.
Today’s photos are from recent afternoon walks around town in the sunshine. A little bit of this and that. Homes, garages, meat markets, ham markets, skewered and smoking sardines. Along the Paseo, paralleling the port and fronting the parking lot, are a string of international bars and restaurants. Two always catch my attention. I was too lazy to walk down the stairs and view them from the front. But the signs will do.
Next to Der Wiener is Area 51, which I assume is named for the place in the United States where some believe aliens are buried in the Nevada desert. Please! If there really were aliens, they’d be in cold storage in a government bunker, not buried under the hot desert sand. The sign over our Area 51 says “Walk In, Dance Out.” Shouldn’t it also read, “Never Walk Out”?
I don’t know if Das Original Der Wiener is supposed to translate to “The Original of Wiener” (like what San Geraldo calls a hot dog) or “The Original of Vienna.” There’s a difference.
.
El letrero sobre nuestra Área 51 dice “Walk In, Dance Out”. ¿No debería leer también, “Nunca Salgas”?
No sé si se supone que Das Original Der Wiener se traduce como “El Original Wiener” (como lo que San Geraldo llama un hot dog) o “El Vienés Original”. Hay una diferencia.
Something for everybody it seems.
Pretty soon you will be ‘floating’ down the streets…..with your new orthotics.
Jim:
Oh, I hope so. And jumping off walls?
I think you ‘walk in’ and then ‘dance out’ on a rocket ship to their home planet where you become an appetizer for aliens.
Bob:
I wonder if the owners know where the giants are buried. (I, sadly, met someone an expat here who asked if I knew!)
spouse has worn custom orthotics for years. they DO help.
that ham DOES look good.
have you ever tried “der wiener” for food/drink?
anne marie:
SG has had them and they unfortunately do him any good. I have never tried any of the places along that stretch near the port. Sitting at a cafe below the Paseo alongside the parking lot doesn’t seem very appealing. But I’m guessing there are some decent places.
Those orthotics should make a big difference! Mine certainly have for the past 10 years or so.
Debra:
I hope so. SG didn’t have much success with his.
Are you certain you’re not actually from Seattle? Hoping for a downpour that you can go for a walk in….?
Area 51 is also right field at Safeco Field. Where Ichiro played….wearing number 51…
Jssw:
And just give me two months in Seattle and I’ll be complaining that I miss the sun! Ichiro, who didn’t sign Chuck’s baseball!
I bet the cushioning in the orthotics will be a big help. Am loving the street scenes!
Wilma:
Looking forward to getting the orthotics. Hope they make the difference. I want to wander more and share more street scenes, but this humidity has gotten to me.
You may have two alien conspiracy theories mixed up. Area 51 is supposedly where they test alien technology resulting from a crash in New Mexico more than 70 years ago. The dead aliens themselves are supposed to be in storage in a Dayton Air Force Base. Perhaps you saw Independence Day where the dead aliens were indeed at Area 51, but that movie was just taking poetic license.
Kirk:
No wonder I couldn’t find the buried aliens when I was there. I was looking in the wrong place.
I am always impressed by just how clean it is in the city and surroundings.
Mary:
It IS a very clean city. The cleanest place we’ve lived. Sevilla was also surprisingly well maintained, as is Málaga.
Oh those pictures of the empty town ….makes me happy! I had insert made once….in the long run they killed my feet even more. You’ll find I go to the doctor for nothing, except a yearly check up.
Mistress Maddie:
I used to only go to the doctor for a yearly check-up. Would love to get back to that routine! August is our busiest month and, although it’s not the usual mob scene this year, it’s still plenty busy. I somehow have managed to learn where to walk, and at what time of day, to escape just about everyone. And things WILL quiet down completely in the next few weeks.
What caught my attention (fishes on sticks notwithstanding) was the fact that Lucifer has a garage in such a pristine neighborhood 🙂
Oh by the way, I read the title and thought we were going to get a tutorial in manscaping! Oh, well.
Deedles:
It could also have been a tutorial on burying the bone.
Deedles:
Thank you for noticing that! That’s what caught my attention and why I took the picture. I was going to write a caption and then I thought, ‘Nah, I’ll just see if anyone else finds that funny.’
I see you, Mr. Green.
Anon?
I had to look through the photos to see what you were talking about. Nope, that’s not me in neon reflected in the ham shop window. Definitely not me!
The ham, the devils garage, what a wonderful place.
David,
I’m glad you like this. I’ve been taking for granted where we live and haven’t appreciated the novelty.
I think you’re probably right on the name origin for the Area 51 bar. Dave and I watched a documentary about Area 51 not too long ago. My issue with the whole aliens thing is that by now, SOMEONE would have leaked a photo. There’s no way aliens or flying saucers are being held there and we still don’t have any visual evidence. Makes a fun story, though.
Steve,
Won’t we be surprised when those giants buried in the desert are retrieved for reburial on their home planet. (The giants are aliens, aren’t they?)
You sure live in a marvelous area
Urspo:
I like it a lot more after I share it with you.
Area 51 or Rosewell of course they are they are there. You jut need to look !
it is me having computer problems….
parsnip
Parsnip:
Oh, I hope the computer problems get worked out. But blogger and wordpress can be very temperamental. So, did you move to where you are so you could be closer to the aliens?
Wow, the skewered, smoking sardines image is pretty wild. Not something I see everyday!
Here’s hoping the orthotic will give you great relief, and that you’ll have a nice downpour to walk in, soon!
Judy C:
Those sardines can be seen all along the beach. On good days, they’re cooking a lot more than sardines out there. Cuttlefish and more. I don’t know which i want more the downpour or the relief. OK, I DO know… both! Thanks!
