WE DROVE TO Granada Wednesday with Judy for a private tour of the Alhambra (the palace and fortress complex) and the Generalife (architect’s gardens). The Alhambra is a walled city within a walled city, which was built beginning in the 8th century atop old Roman fortifications. It was forgotten and then restored and expanded in the 14th century by the Nasrid emir. In 1492, after “reconquest,” it became the royal court of Ferdinand and Isabella. San Geraldo found a private guide, Federico, who met us with tickets in hand and took us on the best tour I’ve ever experienced. Federico is a historian, a charming and exceptional guide who pointed out so many fascinating details we never would have caught on our own. Our first (and only) test during our private tour of the Alhambra in Granada was to say what the Spanish word was for “pomegranate.” After a little hesitation, I remembered. Granada!

La Alhambra es una ciudad amurallada dentro de una ciudad amurallada, que se construyó a partir del siglo VIII sobre antiguas fortificaciones romanas.
