I WALKED YESTERDAY AFTERNOON FOR three hours. I took pictures, did some browsing in a couple of shops, and bought a bottle of water along the way. So, now I have a lot of photos to share that I’ll try to break into bite-sized chunks.

I walked to the Fuengirola River because Kathleen told me about the piles of mud they saw. What a mess after Storm Filomena, but it hasn’t stopped anyone from having fun. The weather since the storm has been perfect, although San Geraldo would tell you it’s been cold. Yesterday during my walk, for example it was only around 60°F/16°C. I wore a long-sleeved shirt!

Jesica and I haven’t had an English class together since November, when our municipal borders were closed. The borders had reopened but tomorrow they close again, so we decided to take our classes online. We met today for two hours and had a blast. She worked hard on her English this entire time, despite having a million (more or less) other things to deal with. And, since we speak both English and Spanish together (I’m not a purist when it comes to lessons), she helps me improve my Spanish.

My biggest problem now (in my mind) is vocabulary. I don’t use many words often enough to remember them. The best compliment I’ve ever gotten about my Spanish, however, came today when I was being self-critical and Jesica told me when I speak Spanish I sound like someone who grew up speaking the language. AND… she said my Spanish is cultured! Jesica is extremely generous — and very wise.

ANDUVE AYER POR LA TARDE durante tres horas. Tomé fotografías, hojeé un par de tiendas y compré una botella de agua en el camino. Entonces, ahora tengo muchas fotos para compartir que intentaré dividir en pedazos pequeños.

Caminé hasta el río Fuengirola porque Kathleen me habló de los montones de barro que vieron. Qué lío después de Storm Filomena, pero no ha impedido que nadie se divierta; el clima desde la tormenta ha sido perfecto, aunque San Geraldo te diría que hace frío. Ayer, durante mi caminata, por ejemplo, solo fue alrededor de 16°C/60°F. ¡Llevaba una camisa de manga larga!

Jesica y yo no hemos tenido una clase de inglés juntas desde noviembre, cuando se cerraron nuestras fronteras municipales. Las fronteras se habían vuelto a abrir pero mañana se vuelven a cerrar, así que decidimos tomar nuestras clases en línea. Nos reunimos hoy durante dos horas y lo pasamos de maravilla. Trabajó duro en su inglés todo este tiempo, a pesar de tener un millón (más o menos) de otras cosas con las que lidiar. Y, dado que hablamos inglés y español juntos (no soy un purista cuando se trata de lecciones), ella me ayuda a mejorar mi español.

Mi mayor problema ahora, en mi mente, es el vocabulario. No uso muchas palabras con suficiente frecuencia para recordarlas. Sin embargo, el mejor cumplido que he recibido sobre mi español llegó hoy, cuando estaba siendo autocrítico y Jesica me dijo que cuando hablo español sueno como alguien que creció hablando el idioma. Y … ¡dijo que mi español es culto! Jesica es extremadamente generosa — y muy sabia.
