Just a number / Solo un numero

La versión en español está después de la versión en inglés.

For our 1st anniversary, we hosted a huge catered party in Boston. We had an apartment on Beacon Hill, on the 2nd floor of a house. Our landlord had the two floors below. He generously invited us to use his den and garden for the party. We were both so impressed we had made it a year. We took no photos.

For our 10th anniversary (we were amazed we had been together so long), we hosted a huge catered party at our home in Guilford, Connecticut. The four guest bedrooms were filled with friends who had been there for our 1st anniversary. Some people even went skinny dipping in our pool (it was dark and no one could see). We took no photos.

We have celebrated every year, sometimes big dinner parties at a restaurant, sometimes just the two of us. For our 25th anniversary, we were living in Las Vegas and flew back to Boston to celebrate with our friends Tom and Jim. Tom was at our 1st anniversary. Jim was with him at our 10th.

Yesterday, 16 August, was our 43rd anniversary. The evening before, we had a casual dinner out at one of the very busy restaurants down the street. Last night, we had dinner (cooked by San Geraldo) at home and watched two episodes of Season 3 of The Bear. I guess we’re not so impressed with ourselves anymore. Here’s our story in short form if you’re interested.

Tonight, we’re going out with Cristina, Alfonso, and María (who now has a gold star — Thursday’s post). The photos range from the Atlantic to the Pacific to the Mediterranean, 1982 to 2023. I hope to get a 43rd anniversary photo of the two of us to share tomorrow.

No tomamos fotos.

No tomamos fotos.

  1. How utterly adorable! 10,000 blessings upon you on your anniversary ❤️❤️❤️. (I will admit with embarrassment I didn’t recognize who that was in the pic at the top; but of course we didn’t know you back then…)

    1. wickedhamster:
The cowboy hats and the Gay Rodeo were a very brief sojourn for us. It was fun until we saw how the animals were treated.

  2. Great pictures of the years together, so very nice. Happy Anniversary to you both and many more.
We are the same as the years go by we do less party and more dinners together of quiet celebration.

  3. Boud here to say awwwwww, how lovely. It looks as if it’s permanent now, no? Best to both of you!

    1. Boud:
Yes, I think I may stay with San Geraldo. I’d venture to say he might even be “the one.”

    1. Ron:
I had initially intended to write about the meaning of 43 in numerology, but I got lost in it all!

  4. Well, I just read your short-version story and now I have tears in my eyes. Yes! You did get carried away and how wonderful that you did!
Congratulations to you both. And although it’s just a feeling I have- I think y’all are going to make it. And by the way- you are both as handsome as you ever were. To my seventy year old eyes, more handsome, in fact.

    1. Ms. Moonsigh:
I think you may be right about us making it. We were both recently looking at our reflections in the elevator mirrors and groaning (and not in a good way). But each of us told the other how good he looked.

  5. Happy anniversary to you both!! Absolutely loved all the historic photos although it was hard for me to tell you apart in the older ones. You look so much alike! And, 43 years ago on 8/8 I was in a wedding and they’re still together too. Love it!

  6. Happy Anniversary, Mitchell. I love seeing the photos over the years and I think my favorite might be the B&W photo. That, or the one on the bottom left. Good looking guys, but I think you’ve both grown ever better with age.
We’ll celebrate 39 years in about a week.

    1. Kelly:
You chose two of my favorites. The top photo was done by a photographer associate of mine in San Diego. He took hundreds, gave us 36 proofs. We only found 2 we liked! Happy almost anniversary to you!

  7. Hugs and kisses and all good wishes. Drat, my punchline button is still broken! I’m stuck in Sapville.
Our 49th was on the second. I don’t remember much since I’ve been stuck between sick and dying since July1st. Meanwhile Balder is growing a beard (looks distinguished until he opens his mouth) and he’s excited planning something extravagant for our 50th. A cruise or a family party in San Diego. I’m hoping for Gatorade and bed. I really don’t know what the compromise should be.
Anyway, I didn’t mean to make this about me, my fingers have a life of their own.
Scoot and SG, have a good one and many more.

    1. Deedles:
You‘re a poet! I’ve seen one photo of Balder Half. I’ll bet he is a major hunk with his beard. I’ve never heard what happens when he opens his mouth. The compromise should be — whatever Balder Half says! I am sending you the most enormous hugs.

      1. I do love me some enormous hugs. Thank you. BH is indeed quite a hunk (notice I didn’t mention a hunk of what). He looks like an old school professor. After one beer, he becomes Beavis and Butthead with a rambunctious St. Bernard puppy thrown into the mix. So, there’s that.

        1. Deedles:
Sounds kind of like SG, except he probably wouldn’t know who Beavis and Butthead are. An enormous cyberhug from SG, too!

  8. Happy anniversary to you and San Geraldo.

Whether or not you smoke, you two make a great pair of Marlboro Men in that top picture.

  9. (And, still, no cupcakes!)

“Mom, how will I know when I’m in love?”
“When you don’t have to ask, honey.”
    Yup!

  10. Congrats to you both on your 43rd Anniversary — what a milestone! Didn’t recognize you guys in cowboy hats either, LOL!

    1. Tundra:
The cowboy hats (and the gay rodeo) were a brief sidetrack for us. I did like the hats.

    1. Walt the Fourth:
Thanks. The photos together made me appreciate how many smiles and laughs we’ve shared.

  11. Oh happy anniversary! I also didn’t recognize you two under the hats, but man you guys continue to look great through the years! 43 years is something. All the best as you continue on….Olivia

  12. Congratulations to you both on your anniversary! May you have many more happy years together!

    Jennifer xx

    1. Adam:
It’s supposed to be a good number in numerology… whatever that means. Thanks!

  13. 43 years! Congratulations! I also read the short version of how you met and it’s lovely. Together forever.

    Love,
    Janie
