What a day I had today! / ¡Qué día he tenido hoy!

La versión en español está después de la versión en inglés.

Ask me how my day went yesterday. Go ahead, ask! “How was your day yesterday, Mitch?” Oy! Don’t ask! But, really, although the day was exhausting all is well. We got out of bed early (for us) because San Geraldo had made an appointment with a new veterinarian for both cats. I scheduled a cat-transporting taxi and we headed over. Moose yowled the entire 7 minutes. Without the cats, we would have walked. It’s only 19 minutes from home.

I had a phone call with my GP to renew my medications while I was giving the address to the driver and we were getting the cats into the hatch back. We were there for 2-1/2 hours. I translated between the vet and Jerry and was pleased with how well I did. The vet and the entire staff were phenomenal. She did blood work, scans, and a complete exam. The lab there was able to quickly provide results, but a couple of things needed to be sent out and we’ll have them in a couple of days. Amazingly, Moose’s immediate results couldn’t have been better. Besides that, he was a sweetheart. He wasn’t happy about things but he was so cooperative.

Dudo was less calm but manageable until the thermometer went up his butt. Then he went berserk. He tried to fly into the air. He tried to bite me. He scratched me. So, we let him go and he jumped off the examining table and under a cabinet. The vet had to use a broom to coax him back into his carrier. She said Moose was unusual; about 80% of the cats they see are as cooperative as or worse than Dudo. She ended up giving him a mild sedative to do the rest of the exam. She then gave both cats shots for the vomiting. Moose didn’t even flinch. Dudo was asleep. She said it’s likely all Dudo needs is a different thyroid medication or an increased dosage. Neither cat is anywhere near death. What a joy.

Once Dudo was back in his carrier at the vet’s office, he turned his back on us when we talked to him. The vet treated my minor scratches, we paid the €600 (heavy sigh), and we brought the cats home. Dudo was still not speaking to us when we went to bed last night. By this morning, however, he had forgiven us. Mostly.

After the vet, we had lunch at home (Burger King; don’t judge). I then had to immediately call another taxi for an appointment with my nephrologist. It had been three months. My lab results were much improved, although I have to do them again in a month. I’m feeling significantly better in general and he was very pleased. It’s a 48-minute walk (uninteresting for the first 26) from there to home and I didn’t know if I had it in me, so I had the driver drop me off at one of the old city gates 22 minutes from home. I then walked for more than 2 hours.

The light fixture is not hung. The kintsugi repairs are not done. Since I began this post with an “Oy,” I decided to share photos of the Jewish Quarter from part of yesterday’s walk, including the kosher beef at the neighborhood’s Ale Hop.

Pregúntame qué tal me fue ayer. ¡Adelante, pregúntame! “¿Qué tal tu día ayer, Mitch?” ¡Ay! ¡No preguntes!

Me arañó.

  1. Well, I guess now we know which boy is the drama queen….DUDO!!!!! And from the looks of the picture it looks like the taxi is playing chicken with the white dove. Who gave in first?

As always glorious pictures of the town. I’m surprised they even let cars down such narrow streets.

    1. Mistress Maddie:
I’m surprised at times, too. SG has squeezed through some tight passages that made me hold my breath. Oh, yes, Dudo is THE drama queen.

  2. Despite the stress, it sounds like the Vet found nothing immediately life threatening, that is good news. Dudo is looking thin these days. Vets really should provide sedatives for the humans – especially before handing over the bill. Relax and enjoy the beauty.

    1. David:
Even the vet was surprised by the perfect results of Moose’s initial tests. And, yes, I should have had a sedative.

  3. After all that drama, it’s fabulous to explore with you the winding little streets of old Cordoba. I want to stop and have a nibble or at least a drink in every one of those bars and restaurants! Jx

    1. Jon:
Some of the those spots are so inviting. I was tempted to enter the philosophy cafe, but I worried I’d be expected to philosophise.

  4. Good news all around! Excellent!
The car/dove photo is an amazing catch. I can hear the dove thinking, “Whoops!”
    Ms. Moon

    1. Ms. Moon:
I loved the capture of the dove and taxi. I was slow to get the shot of the taxi as it squeezed through the street but then the rock dove flew into frame at the perfect moment.

  5. Wow, Dudo wasn’t having it!! But I’m glad they got good results; you always worry as they get older.
And good on you for your results. It must have been a good day all around!!

    1. Bob:
The day was so exhausting that I couldn’t completely take in all the good news. Nice.

  6. Very glad the kits seem okay, but your Treasury isn’t feeling so well. Oh well. And your own health is improved, Cordoba and walking doing the trick? I’m hoping this trend continues.
Were those narrow streets originally meant for horse travel? Even then narrow if you met another one head on. Boud

    1. Boud:
Yes, the streets were used for horse travel and mostly people doing their business (pulling carts of their own). My stomach did a flip when I saw the bill! SG had asked earlier, “So what do you think this is all going to cost? I’m guessing 500.” I had no response. As the vet was giving us the bill, we saw €285 at the bottom and were both so happy. Then she said, “This is for Mussy.”

  7. My, what an interesting and fun (if that is the word) city you live in.
    A photographer’s dream.
Happy to hear that the boys have a few more years! Worth every penny to know that. What a thorough exam it was.
Keep those good health results coming.

    1. Jim:
We were surprised by Moose’s test results, and so was the vet. I SO find the city to be fun.

  8. Lovely photos, as usual. I love the shy cow at Ale-Hop. For some odd reason, I just loved ¡Qué día he tenido hoy! It sounds just as good as the English original. I gotta ask: is the café the canteen of the school of philosophy, or is the place just named that, or does it perhaps occupy the building of the old school of philosophy of the university? Glad the kitties are OK! 😘

    1. wickedhamster:
After I posted, I thought maybe my philosophy caption would be misleading. It IS the cafe at the School of Philosophy. I was standing next to the entrance of the school when I took the photo.

        1. wickedhamster:
I figured you would have gone in a heartbeat. It looked charming. But Schopenhauer argues that the charming stimulates the Will and thus disrupts pure aesthetic contemplation. I worried some student would want to philosophize and I didn’t have it in me.

  9. The vet’s assessment sounds promising for resolving the barfing issue. Poor Dudo had a rough time of it. Moose takes everything in stride.

Love the photo of the coy Ale-Hop Cow! And wow, what a photo of the white car and white dove encounter in the narrow laneway! I’d entitle it something like “21st century annunciation.”

    1. Debra:
Moose has grown so much more mellow over the years. He was a sweetheart. I was surprised when the dove flew into frame just as I snapped. What lucky timing. Oh, I mean, I did an amazing job training that dove.

  10. Glad to hear both the boys are nowhere near death. My question of the day…how do those pots hanging high on the wall get watered or are they fake flowers? Also, I hope those narrow streets are one way.

    1. ellen abbott:
I think the polka dot pots had fake flowers. For the others, and there are lots of them around, they’re usually watered using a really long extension pole.

  11. Oh, such sweet news 🙂 I love those guys… Moose and Dudo are a joy to follow. And, Mitch, so glad that you are feeling good and test results are good… joy 🙂

  12. Moo to the Ale Hop. I’m happy about your results and hope the shot works to make the cats stop barfing. I know the pain of vet bills very well.

    Love,
    Janie

    1. janiejunebug:
The cats are now also getting a pill (pulverized in food) every day to control vomiting. There’s been no vomit since the morning we went to the vet! Here’s hoping.

  13. You had an exhausting, but productive and POSITIVE day!! That’s just too cute how they have the Ale Hop cow posed.

  14. I’m so glad Moose & Dudo are OK: the vet check results must be a relief! Your colourful and bright photos reflect your happy mood too. That shy Ale-Hop cow would certainly draw me into that store just to satisfy my curiosity, LOL!

    1. Tundra Bunny:
I was tempted by the cow to go in, but I restrained myself. We couldn’t believe the great news for the cats.

  15. My favourite post of yours , chatty , catty( Albert was a vet fighter) and beautiful photos of home

  16. Good to hear that about the two cats, especially Dudo. Whatever his behavior, I sometimes worry about him and his weight loss.

    1. Kirk:
I hope we’ll have the rest of the results today and that Dudo can start to get better treatment. Right now, he’s nothing but skin and bones.

    1. walt the fourth:
Remember when we did all this AND went to work? I don’t know how we did it.

  17. Taking cats to the vet is always a fraught experience. You just don’t know WHAT will happen and WHAT their reactions are going to be.

    1. Raybeard:
Yes, just getting them in the carriers is enough stress to last a week.

  18. Well, that was like sitting through a James Bond movie!
Those kitties could have their own blog.
But let’s be real, a thermometer up there? He was in his feels.
    Glad everything went well.
Those streets are beautiful but you do need a Fiat or a Mini Cooper to drive them comfortably.

    XOXO

    1. Sixpence Nonethewiser:
Well, you know Moose didn’t mind that thermometer as all. Then again, Dudo has always been the top. We really need a Twizzy for these streets.
