AT 9:15 THIS morning I phoned The Kid Brother. We planned to meet for lunch at the original Nathan’s in Coney Island, which is diagonally across the street from the subway station. “Let’s make it 10,” he ordered.
“Chuck,” I said, “I can’t get there that fast from here. I can get there by 10:30.”
“Not 10?” “No, not 10. At 10:30.” “OK. OK,” he muttered, “See you at 10:30.”
Meeting The Kid Brother somewhere can be stressful. Sometimes he changes his mind and doesn’t show up. It isn’t uncommon for him to have “stepped out” when he knows I’m coming to pick him up.
I hustled to the subway and arrived at Nathan’s at 10:20 — where I waited for The Kid Brother. Until 10:48!
“You’re late,” I joked (something he loves telling ME).
“I know!”
“Did something happen?” I asked.
“No.”
Case closed.

A LAS 9:15 de la mañana llamé a El Hermanito. Planeamos reunirnos para almorzar en Nathan’s original en Coney Island, que está en diagonal al otro lado de la calle desde la estación de metro.. “Hagámoslo 10”, ordenó.

Organizar un encuentro con El Hermanito en algún lugar puede ser estresante. A veces él cambia de opinión y no aparece. No es raro que haya “salido” cuando sabe que voy a recogerlo.
Me apresuré al metro y llegué a Nathan’s a las 10:20, donde esperé a The Kid Brother. ¡Hasta las 10:48!
“Llegas tarde”, bromeé (algo que le encanta decirME).
“¡Lo sé!”
“¿Paso algo?” Yo pregunté.
“¡No!”
Caso cerrado.
De vuelta en la silla salvavidas de la estación de metro Coney Island. ¡Me alegro de no tener que esperar a que EL me saque del agua! (Y sí, ya está gastando mi dinero).
