As many of you know, yesterday was my birthday (although I got confused at dinner after seeing Cirque du Soleil and thought it was already Monday, so told people my birthday was the day before). Anyway, never mind. Cirque du Soleil was wonderful. The show is a remake of the original Alegría which ran from 1994 until 2013, and is called Alegría: In a New Light. The themes are more modern and enlightened and the acts are phenomenal.
Our hosts of sorts were two clowns called Gomino and Bermejino, both from Spain, both named Pablo (Pablo Gomis, above left, and Pablo Bermejo, above right), friends since their days in drama school, and they both appeared in the original Alegría show. This time around, almost everything was different. The two Pablos were the core of the show and even had an on-stage romance. San Geraldo got us phenomenal seats just a few feet away from the stage.
At one point, Gomino, walked to the edge and winked at me. I blew him a kiss. A while later, Bermijino stepped off the stage and grabbed my hand to join them. I at first resisted but he insisted and San Geraldo said, “Oh, go ahead.” Bermijino and Gomino proceeeded to have a competition for my love. It was hilarious and wonderful and I enjoyed every minute. Bermejino even tried to win me over with jewelry. What a birthday gift.
Photography is not permitted during the show but someone from the show stopped by at the end and asked for my number. Before we even got home, I received a video of the scene. It’s not the best, but you’ll get the idea. When we left, many people congratulated me on my performance. The little girl seated behind me gave me two high fives. We had taxied there and took the train home. On the way to the train, a couple passed and the man said, “Well done!” When we got off the train, a couple stopped us to say they had seen me and wondered if I wanted copies of the photos they took (they didn’t follow the rules). Stupidly, I thanked them but declined because I knew I had the video. Ah well. Anyway, I’m not comfortable with black market photos.
I did wonder afterward if the two Pablos realized they had dragged a 70-year-old on stage to perform with them. A birthday that will not be forgotten. Thanks, San Geraldo. I needed that!
Gracias San Gerardo. ¡Yo necesitaba eso!
