Greetings from Chinatown / Saludos desde Chinatown

La versión en español está después de la versión en inglés.

Last Saturday, I took the subway to East Broadway on the Lower East Side to meet my cousin Ellen, her husband, Allen, their daughters, Carly and Brooke, and Brooke’s boyfriend, Jack, in Chinatown for a dim sum lunch. Ellen (my cousin Evie’s daughter) had been asking me what I wanted to do that day, but Carly was seriously craving dim sum and that was fine with me. If I could choose my family, I’d choose them in a heartbeat.

I didn’t know that they, too, had arrived early. Ellen texted me, but the text didn’t appear on my phone until a couple of hours later. So I wandered while they waited. Here are some random photos of Chinatown. I still have dim sum lunch photos (and shopping) to share. A perfect day. The temperature had risen to above freezing (just barely).

To top things off, Brooke had been nearby in Brooklyn visiting Jack the day before and she texted me to get together, just the two of us. We have never had that opportunity and I was honored. Of course, I love her even more now than I did before, and I didn’t think that was possible. Sometimes, I feel so lucky. I was gifted a collection of cards and art from Brooke, an illustrator. I’ll share those soon, too, before I frame them.

  1. Boud here. What great relatives you have! Such a good time. Of course it takes a great relative to have one. Thanks for the Chinatown pictures, complete with snakes for the Year of the.

    1. Boud:
I have a large extended family with just a few very special cousins I’m close with, and I’m grateful for that.

  2. I know some people think of graffiti as vandalism, and some might bem, but I love that spray-paint riddle facade.
And those photos of the streets; oy, I love a New York street!
    Your family seems wonderful.

    1. Bob:
I found those painted buildings energized. Ellen and I always had a special bond and it’s gotten even stronger with her entire family.

  3. A place I have not been, looks like a fun neighborhood. There are only a couple of stores left in Chinatown in DC. The basketball arena changed that area so much.

  4. I’ve never really seen Chinatown… always heard of it, because it’s so famous, but I’ve never seen so many photos showing just how Chinatown it is!
(Shhhh… don’t let anyone know this place exists, or the next thing you know, it will be renamed AmericaTown 😉 )

    1. Judy C:
I have more photos to come. Yeah, soon the government will have them remove all signs not in “American.”

  5. I could use some Dim Sum right about now!
Happy you have connected with that ‘special person’ in the family.

  6. When my good friend and sister Mame, still lived in Hells Kitchen, we always did Chinatown the day after being out till 6am and hungover. We always visited the Excellent Dumpling House for a huge table full of earthly delights, and then would head over to Pearl River Mart. Which I sadly think closed or moved to another location.

    1. Mistress Borghese:
Pearl River Mart apparently reopened on Broadway, but it’s about a 15-20 minute from where we were. I loved that old store.

      1. Me too!!!! When I first moved out, I got alot of things for my apartment there and continued to supplement things from them every time I was in NYC. They had everything…cheap prices and their home goods and kitchen ware and such was actually very durable. Some things I still have!

  7. I’m not a city person, but I sure enjoy seeing one through another’s eyes (camera). What a bright, vibrant area!
One of your new Cordoba photos of Moose and Dudo was the banner photo for me today. They’re so cute!

    1. Kelly:
I’m still a city person at heart and have a great time when I’m in NYC, but I enjoy our scaled-down version of city life in Córdoba.

  8. Whenever I visit a big city, I HAVE GOT to go to Chinatown. One, the food is always absolutely delicious and two, I always buy something (tea, chopsticks, candy) that I treasure.
    Love the pics!!

    XOXO

    1. Sixpence Notthewiser:
I haven’t been to a lot of Chinatowns. Went often when we lived in San Francisco. We did some great browsing in NYC but didn’t buy anything.

    1. Urspo:
I’m stunned you had never heard of NYC’s Chinatown. It’s the largest one in the western hemisphere.

    1. janiejunebug:
Chinatown can be a lot of fun. And, yes, wonderful to have this family. I have a large extended family and have very few I love and enjoy.

    2. janiejunebug:
The food options in Chinatown are wonderful. And if you love to shop or just browse, it’s a blast.
