Per tradition, The Kid Brother and I went to the NYC Transit Museum a few minutes from my hotel. The museum is underground in the old Court Street subway station and we never tire of it. KB loves it because he’s a subway Zen master. If you need to get anywhere in the city, just ask him. (Click here for an example.)
The first photo below has become our annual pose in a cut-away bus in the museum. I look exhausted and he needs a shave. I’ve never seen him unshaven. I bought him a new electric shaver and he used it before our next get-together. After the museum we always go to a burger joint, two8two Bar & Burger on Atlantic Avenue, for lunch. That’s followed by dessert at Mia’s Bakery on Smith Street. I usually have a latte. The Kid Brother has iced tea. Along with my coffee, I have Mia’s famous canookie, a sandwich of two chocolate chip cookies stuffed with cannoli cream. Exquisite. That’s it in the photo at top. Along with his tea, Chuck always has carrot cake. That was our day Friday. After Mia’s Bakery, KB took the nearby subway home and I holed up in my hotel until sunrise Saturday, the day I met my cousins in Chinatown. A truly wonderful day and another 75 photos.

Love the two of you on the “bus.”
And who knew $30 for parking would sound like a deal–in Savannah we valeted the car at the hotel for $40 A DAY!!!
And I imagine you’d have to pry away the Kid Brother from his Carrot Cake to get a haircut and a shave!
Bob:
Savannah, too? That’s awful. Same at my hotel. I think Chuck waits all year to have carrot cake at Mia’s!
Mmmm, that carrot cake looks good! Of course, so does the canookie. And I liked reading the subway poem by Billy Collins. He’s a favourite poet of mine.
Debra:
I, too, love that poem. Chuck loves his carrot cake and Mia’s does it well. But, oh, my canookie. I live all year for that.
I wonder what was up with the unshaven look? Was his razor broken or was he just trying something new? Your cookie looks good, but I’d also have gone for the carrot cake, which is always my default.
Steve:
Yes, the shaver apparently wasn’t working correctly. I have no idea why. Easier to buy him another new one. I used to go for carrot cake, but that canookie is heaven.
A great day out, in an amazing city. Between parking prices and now a congestion charge to drive into the core of the City, maybe there will be fewer cars on the street. One of my great grandfathers worked on the tunnels under the rivers in NYC.
David:
The locals I spoke to all said they’d simply pay the congestion charge. The ones who can’t afford the congestion charge already can’t afford to drive into the city, so I don’t think it will have an impact on public transport. We shall see.
KB would make the perfect subway guide!
I like the look of those Canookies!!
Jim:
KB is incredible. I bought him a subway map poster at the museum. He immediately hung it. He loves maps. The canookies alone are worth a trip to Brooklyn.
I love the pictures you take in NYC with your brother. Your annual excursion to see him, to do fun things with him (after the jet lag wears off, of course), to make sure he’s doing well, to add another layer of caring and loving and making new memories, even from many times revisited traditions.
Billy Collins. Well, as someone who is not a practiced poetry reader, I can say that Billy has my heart.
Moon Sigh
Ms. Moonsigh:
I’m not a practiced poetry reader either, but sometimes a poem grabs me.
It’s great to hear of your adventures with Chuck, and to see him, knowing that he’s having a great time with you 🙂 Didn’t you buy him an electric shaver last year?
That price for parking! Holy bejeebers!
Judy C:
Yes, I did buy him a shaver last year! I have no idea what happened but it was easier to buy a new one… and he was in desperate need of a shave. Parking was always ridiculous. It gets worse every year.
Boud here to say Billy Collins is the best. And KB, Zen master of the subway. It’s great to know he’s very competent on transportation. The food is good, as always. And what a great time together. Does he count on doing certain things every time you visit?
Boud:
The weekend group Chuck belong to from the age of 10 gave what they called “travel training.” It opened the world (well, the city) to him and he had a gift for it. And, oh yes, he’s a creature of habit. If we do it once, it’s a tradition.
That canookie looks awfully sweet, maybe too sweet for my tastes beyond one small bite. But the carrot cake…MMMmmmm!!!!! I realize it’s probably every bit as sweet as the canookie but I could eat that whole slice! Carrot cake is a favorite of mine.
I love the relationship you have with KB. You are both so fortunate.
Jennifer
Jennifer:
The carrot cake is even sweeter than the canookie. Mia’s carrot cake, however, is the best around. I do love Chuck and he loves me!
I’m cursing my diabetes just looking at that cake
finlaygray:
I curse my diabetes and eat the canookie.
Love the Billy Collins poem and love the look of that carrot cake, but those parking prices are crazy!
Kelly:
The carrot cake is exceptional. The parking prices are ridiculous.
I’ve paid around $30 for overnight hotel parking, but “$9 @ half an hour, $30 @ 2 hours” … what the heck. Overnight would cost hundreds.
Shirley:
Overnight parking is usually between $40 and $60 although there are sometimes better deals to be found.Crazy.
That canookie does look delicious (as does Chuck’s carrot cake) — too bad it sounds like something that shouldn’t be happening in a restaurant, LOL! Yeah, my mind went immediately to “Canadian nookie”… but since it’s New York, leave the gun, take the canookie!
Tundra Bunny:
I did think of nookie but not Canadian nookie. I picture ice skates and maple leaves (both strategically placed, I hope).
Oh my goodness, I couldn’t tell you when I drove in New York last. I just take the train when I go. Less worrying, unless you answer my car getting damaged in a parking garage.
Mistress Borghese:
I remember driving across town for theatre in the ’70s when a guy backed a car out of a parking garage right into the side of my car. He raced back inside and hid away. I tried getting justice, but the valet denied it and I gave up.
Canookie sounds so wonderfully suggestive, and it looks delicious. I think Chuck looked pretty good unshorn. 2 hours = 30 bucks Yeah, that’s about right, and not only in New York. Looks like the two of you had a good time.
Love,
Janie
janiejunebug:
Canookies are even better than they sound or look. We had a great time together.
An iced tea? Good for him!
Urspo:
His old standby.
Oh, that canookie looks so delicious. I wish I could just grab it from the computer screen and have a bite.
Kirk:
I wish you could, too. You would not be disappointed.
