Temples, synagogues, and a monkey / Templos, sinagogas, y un mono

Okay. One final walk around Chinatown and then we’ll move along. On my return walk to the subway, I passed another grand old building and took a picture. I looked it up and discovered it was originally Pike Street Synagogue (official name, Sons of Israel Kalwarie Synagogue) and was built in 1904. It was sold in 1979 and in the 1990s was sold again and reopened as Sung Tak Buddhist Temple, commercial space, and mediocre apartments on the top floor (a small studio rented for $1,700 3 years ago). It’s currently on the market again.

And now that I believe I’m finished talking about Chinatown (I’m not making any promises) I thought I’d mention what’s going on here in Córdoba. We can’t help reading the news (and blog posts that remind us of what’s going on) and we are both trying to avoid days spent in a depressive cloud. Yesterday, I never even got dressed.

Dudo has been doing very well tolerating his twice-daily pill for hyperactive thyroid. San Geraldo grinds it up into soft food morning and night and he’s not even aware of it (even though it’s described as slightly bitter). I can already see and feel a difference in him and that makes us very happy.

We were out for dinner last weekend with our two friends here in Córdoba. We met at a restaurant called Taberna Góngora just a 10-minute walk from home and it was excellent. They don’t take reservations and open the doors at 8. There was already a line when we arrived at 8 and there was a line out on the street when we left around 10:30. We’ll be back.

We’ve been enjoying dinners at home regularly lately. Last night, SG was planning to cook up a casual meal of ham and eggs. He was also going to vacuum the apartment during the evening. He began by cleaning the litter box and vacuuming around that. That was all I heard. At 9:10 p.m., I stepped over the vacuum cleaner in the dining room and walked into San Geraldo’s office. “How’s it going,” I asked. He said, “Oh, I got distracted.” “Pizza?” I suggested. He nodded and I phoned it in.

I hope to be a bit more active today, but I just reminded myself, I did do quite a bit of work in my office yesterday. I had an old, small dresser that had been in my closet. I was going to haul it downstairs, but I decided I could use it as a side table for my desk. It works perfectly along with the glass side table I already had. Loads of surface and storage space. So I was moving and arranging and organizing for a while. We were notified that our new comfy chair will be delivered Monday. I sure hope we like it after the two-month wait. Once it’s here I’ll start taking pictures of the apartment. We’re still not finished but it’s presentable. And now it’s time to shower, shave, and work on the attitude.

OK.

Él dijo: “Oh, me distraje”.

• Lots of fun items for sale, but no room to move around. I didn’t stay long.
No me quedé mucho tiempo.

• Originally the Pike Street Synagogue, dedicated in 1904. The facade was designated a New York City landmark in 1997. Unfortunately, that was two years after the original stained glass windows were removed (see below).
• 1978. It was sold in September 1979.
• 1978. Se vendió en septiembre de 1979.
• I wanted this, but it wouldn’t fit in my suitcase.

  1. Boud here to say I hope you’re feeling better now. And thank you for Chinatown. I see more of it in your blog than I’ve seen in real life.

  2. I love crowded Asian shops like that, although they do become a little claustrophobic after a while. The former synagogue is a beautiful building indeed. I bet it was spectacular inside in its heyday.

    1. Debra:
The shop was so much fun. But it was like one of those museum tours where there was always someone behind you and you had to keep moving.

  3. I am a believer in reincarnation and the feeling gets even stronger in me when I see these streets of older buildings in NYC. I feel as if I’ve been there before, in another time and it’s quite a comforting feeling.
Good to hear Dudo’s doing better, and not turning up his nose at the meds mixed with food!

    1. Bob:
We’re so relieved with Dudo. Maybe you were the original rabbi at Pike Street Synagogue.

  4. Our old cat Jack had the thyroid issue and the pills did seem to help him a lot. It’s scary when they get so skinny.
That monkey on his back belongs in my house. Perhaps I could make on in pottery. Hahaha.
I wonder why they removed the stained glass from the Pike Street Synagogue.
I completely understand the depressive cloud. Everything seems rather pointless as the world crumbles around us.

    1. Ms. Moon:
That monkey DOES belong in your house! I’m sure they sold the stained glass. Such a shame.

  5. Oh, that mono! I’m enjoying seeing Chinatown… merci!
I look forward to seeing photos of your office and the rest of the apartment, with the new comfy chair, and I’m so glad for Dudo tolerating his medication well 🙂

    1. Judy C:
I’d better do some cleaning before I take any pictures. The chair’s not here yet. We seriously need a housekeeper!

  6. OMG! That monkey! I want it too!

$1,700 for a studio doesn’t sound too outrageous — I paid $1,500 a month for my studio in Yorkville 25 years ago! Plus the windows in the old synagogue look like they’d be amazing, even without the stained glass.

    1. Steve:
I wish I could have bought that monkey. Yes, $1,700 is a steal. As I said, the apartment was mediocre.

  7. Ups and downs. I’m thankful for the ups, and for yours, too. I’ve learned medication helps. Pizza is always a good choice (even vegan versions!).

  8. Form a synagogue to a Buddhist temple. At least when it comes to selling real estate, religions don’t discriminate against other religions.

  9. Dudo’s medication is working and he’s filling out again — YAY! SG also deserves a medal for successfully hiding Dudo’s meds and not getting his hands scratched to ribbons…

    1. Tundra Bunny:
We’re relieved (and surprised) by how easy it’s been for SG with Dudo’s meds. Still, Dudo hasn’t slowed down in his demands for food. This is going to take a long time to unlearn!

  10. I have a thyroid problem and so did Franklin. We took the same meds and felt much better. I’m depressed by the news, too. I love your photos.

    Love,
    Janie
