A new condo / Un nuevo condominio

La versión en español está después de la versión en inglés.

In Fuengirola, we had three cat trees (kitty condos). When we bought a new one for the living area, we moved the previous one to San Geraldo’s office to replace the oldest one which was then moved to the terrace. By the time we left Fuengirola, the two older ones were torn and tattered and an eyesore. SG had plans to buy the supplies and renovate them himself, but never got around to it.

We got rid of the terrace tree before we moved. There’s no room for one on our new terrace. Well, there is, but then it would be the cats’ terrace. At long last, we bought a new one for SG’s office and I assembled it yesterday. What an improvement.

As you can see in the photo above (and in today’s videos), the cats were already in love with it as soon as I began assembly. Moose was like a kitten.

In the evening, Dudo was happily settled one level down from the top when Moose arrived. There was a major squabble that had to be broken up by San Geraldo. Dudo was an absolute shit. Today, so far, peace and brotherly love (and distance) rein.

• King of the hill (before Moose arrived).
• Rey de la colina (antes de que llegara Moose).
• Dudo, at an entirely different level.
• Dudo, a un nivel completamente diferente.
• What the hell are YOU doing here?
• ¿Qué carajo estás haciendo TÚ aquí?
• From the base of the old cat tree.
• De la base del viejo árbol para gatos.
• Moose found it!
• ¡Moose lo encontró!

  1. Funny how they both want the smaller one in those videos. Also, a cat sometimes seem as puzzled about another cat’s behavior as a human is puzzled about a cat’s behavior.

    1. Kirk:
The videos are of them playing in the first level of the new cat tree while I assembled it.

  2. Condo? Mcmansion is more like it. They only need a deck, pool, cabana.. Evidently no matter how many square feet, they will probably both want the same place at once. They have such surprised looks in the videos. This? Mine? Boud.

    1. Boud:
They now have two McMansions and the rest of the apartment is theirs, as well. They’ve grown up with silver spoons in their mouths. We have stainless.

  3. I’m just going to say it- cats are so weird. Probably not as defined by cats themselves but as a human I look at them and think, “What the hell is going on in that brain?” I suppose that is part of the attraction. We never know what they’re going to do next. Of course, there is also the furry and cute aspect.

    1. Ms. Moon:
Yes, cats are weird. However, Dudo and Moose told me humans are weirder. They watch the news and ask “What the hell is going on in THAT brain?”

    1. Steve:
Yes, they do. And they do regularly thank us (before turning their backs on us).

    1. Bob:
That was one of Moose’s favorite spots to nap. I’m glad he found it and enjoyed it still. Yeah, this is the fourth McMansion I’ve assembled for the cats. They always appear to be grateful. Of course Dudo then curled up in a paper bag from a package that had just arrived.

  4. I love these guys! None of the cats that I ever had liked cat condos. One preferred cuddling with my rottweiler and another napped on top of my head. Same difference I suppose.

    1. Rottweilers are my breed of choice and in my fantasy world I’d raise a Rottie and a kitten together.

      1. Kelly:
We had friends in San Diego who rescued a Rottweiler when she was 4 years old. She was the sweetest dog and one of our cats, Dobie, fell in love with her. (Dobie was friends with everybody.)

    2. Deedles:
These two like condos and cuddling and the bedroom chair and the living furniture and the dining room chairs and the terrace and the rug in the foyer and the ray of sun on the kitchen floor. It’s all for them.

  5. What a fancy HUGE new condo!! Surely with all that room they can both enjoy it without getting in each other’s way. The videos are cute. What a life those kitties have!

    1. Tundra Bunny:
I would LOVE to see Dudo on a big hamster wheel. Moose would just lie on the floor nearby and simply watch. Or maybe not. He does surprise us.

  6. D & M ought to be pleased as Punch at their new ‘home’, but we can be sure they won’t show it. I bet by now they’re taking it for granted and looking out for their next surprise gift.

  7. Looks like Three-dimensional Chess with Dudo and Moose as the opposing Kings. I’m sure that would challenge Mr. Spock.

  8. We have one condo for our duo that is now relegated to the breezeway. It affords either of them an acceptable perch to gaze out the front windows. I have an older carpeted “throne” (left over from cats of yore) that #2 cat has claimed as her day-bed. Otherwise, they pretty much sleep anywhere. The only addition I’ve made was the purchase of several 3′ tall scratching posts that I put strategically near the exposed corners of the living room furniture. That cut down on the “shredding” substantially…

Love our duo. Two rescues that came from a shelter when they were 6 mos. old (now going on 6 years old) They were a “bonded” pair, but one would think they were more like mortal enemies of each other with all the hissing and pouncing. They also cannot be more than 20 feet apart at any one time. They are “yard cats”; or “Dork Ats” (Door Cats – whatever side of the door they are on, they want to be on the other side). The duo keep the yard clear of moles, voles and rats, as well as evicting any that happen to wend their way inside the house, along with chasing squirrels and pestering the woodchuck that tries to nest under our deck. They earn their keep.

I have had plenty of dogs over my lifetime, but I really prefer the company of cats.

    1. Rade:
We adopted these two when they were already 10 months old and they’re now 14. Brothers, they lived in a small cage at the rescue center, the two together. They either adore each other or want to kill each other. Indoor only. I suppose it would be especially difficult to teach them how to independently take the elevator down from the 7th floor.
