The convent and church of Our Lady of Grace were built within the city walls in the 17th century on the remains of a 15th-century hermitage. In 1808, French soldiers invaded and plundered the city, stripping the convent of all valuables, and destroying what they didn’t take, unless locals helped themselves. The French left Córdoba hastily to face another battle and were permanently forced out of the city in 1812 and out of all of Spain by 1813.
I remember an exceptional museum in Sevilla (click here), built as a home for poor, retired priests. San Geraldo and I did the audio tour where the narrator complained that the French never returned any of the things they had stolen. We laughingly wondered how much the Spanish returned to Latin America (and how many victims were brought back to life).
I had wanted to explore inside the church and gardens, but the last time I was there, I was having a great walk outdoors and had already given quite a bit of money to buskers and beggars in the neighborhood. As I began to climb the stairs I was immediately hit up for more money and then found two beggars seated on either side of the doors. I didn’t have it in me to say “no.” I usually do, but that day I was feeling the need to save everyone. It had become expensive and out of hand. I felt guilty and simply walked away (although I stewed). Anyway, the stone work amazed me. I plan to go back to explore the church when it’s not 42C/108F outside.
I intended to go out before lunch today, but my stomach had been off again. After 5 pills, I think it may be settled. But it’s already 6 p.m., the heat is at its peak, and I’m not at full strength. Laundry is on the roof. That was enough “outside.” San Geraldo walked to the hardware store this morning and felt ill on the way back. The air quality is only fair (thanks mostly to dust from the Sahara) which is probably what made SG feel so awful.
I just spent an hour on the phone with our awful bank (with a wonderful agent) trying to pay the balance of my credit card. The “bot” did not cooperate. I was required to log into my account on my phone while we spoke. My password did not work. It was the correct password. He had me try multiple times at different speeds. I was then locked out. He got me back in, had me try twice more and then got me a new password. I was able to log into my account with that, but it did not work when he had me do it on the phone with him. He said he could simply make the payment on my behalf. He could not. He was informed that because we were still using the card, the bot would not allow the balance to be paid until all purchases had cleared. Say what? There’s significantly more in the account than anything outstanding.
Several weeks ago, San Geraldo’s card was compromised. The bank mailed him a new card a month ago to arrive in 10 days. He learned today the card was sent to Fuengirola. Tomorrow we go to the new bank we had selected, finally, to open an account. And the beat goes on.
My hip is great today.
Mi contraseña no funcionaba. Era la contraseña correcta. Me hizo intentarlo varias veces a diferentes velocidades. No pudo.
