San Geraldo removed Dudo’s cone Monday because he was going back to the vet that day. Dudo was ecstatic. Unfortunately, he immediately began grooming and spent too much time on his wound. It was too soon. SG tried to get Dudo in the travel cage. It didn’t happen. I took a picture of Dudo’s wound. SG walked the 2 minutes to the vet’s office and was told to put the cone back on for another week. That took a few days and Dudo is now obviously depressed. Moose is once again keeping his distance. And San Geraldo and I are both miserable.

The litter box is still lined with paper towels to avoid Dudo getting litter in his wound, which SG cleans every day while I soothe Dudo, who is amazingly well behaved for that. Moose announces to the world when he’s about to use the litter box. He then yowls and yowls until it’s cleaned. I won’t get into the details of Moose’s poop recently, but it’s not pleasant when it has to be cleaned from the plastic. Dudo pees, quickly departs, and then invariably returns to bury the evidence. If we replace the paper towels too quickly, he reburies nothing and we have to do it again (or they’ll both complain when it’s time for another deposit).

I’m still dragging around after my whatever I had, but my foot is doing great (although I still have to wear the “special” shoe). The weather for Holy Week has been awful. Rain and wind every day. With so many visitors expected in town, lifeguards have been on duty all week. They change the flags from red to yellow and back again and then sit behind the windows in the lifeguard stands. Not a fun way to spend a week.

When we went for dinner with Maria and her parents before I got sick, we were talking about illness (Alfonso felt a cold coming on) and San Geraldo did an imitation of his late father who, when he had the slightest headache, leaned his head against a wall and moaned. When the gang went for dinner without me two nights later, Maria immediately walked over to the same spot and did the imitation. SG joined her. That’s the photo up top today.

Dudo estaba extasiado. No sucedió.

• Fresh paper towels. Too soon.
• Toallas de papel limpias. Demasiado pronto.
• Dudo returns to bury the evidence, not appreciating that I already removed the evidence.
• “Palm” Sunday.
• El Domingo de Ramos.
• Aloe Vera Thursday.
• El Jueves de Aloe Vera.
• Good Friday, after a torrential downpour. The lifeguards are still on duty.
• Viernes Santo, tras un aguacero torrencial. Los socorristas siguen de servicio.

    1. sillygirl: I look forward to going on a whining-free and litter box—free adventure one of these days.

  1. Hang in there you guys………the sun will shine once again on all of you.
    LOVE the Aloe Vera! WOW!
Great last photo of SG and Maria.

  2. Man oh man, poor Dudo; just when he thinks he’s good to go, the cone comes back!
And you and SG are the best Cat Daddies, and know The Boys appreciate it, even when they yowl.

    1. Bob:
Thankfully, Dudo’s cold is almost gone and he’s gotten perky and adorable again — even if limited by the cone. (He keeps crashing into walls.)

  3. Always something! The cats have five star caregivers. I love the leaning against the wall moaning.

    1. Boud:
Apparently the woe-is-me routine was passed down through the generations by the men of SG’s family.

  4. Fortuna’s Wheel absolutely must turn soon for your sweet family. Isn’t it amazing how such times can make us long for those days of normalcy that we did not even appreciate for how sweet they were?
Maria is just a ray of delight, isn’t she?
Look at your orchids! So pretty. And your aloes bloom yellow. Mine are red.

    1. MsMaryMoon:
Maria IS a ray of delight. And she has a great sense of humor… and a strong will. I never did like normal, but I’m missing it right now.

  5. You probably don’t really need (or want) suggestions about the cats — but would shredded newspaper work better in the litter box? That’s what I used to do when my cats couldn’t use litter, and it gave them a sense of “burying” that whole paper towels might not. Just a thought.

I’m glad your foot is better, at least!

    1. Steve:
I don’t know if shredded newspaper would be any more pleasant with these two and how they shovel things around. For me, the best solution would be to have someone else standing by the litter box and cleaning it as required. Moose sometimes poops right on the paper towels and then folds a clean section over the top. Sometimes.

  6. Wonderful photos today. The delight that SG and Maria take in each other is a treat to see. As for the rest of it – sometimes you just have to endure long enough to reach the other side.

    1. Wilma:
Maria makes us feel so loved. She started studying English this year and is already having conversations with us. She seems to understand everything but sometimes can’t find the words. Christina tries to speak English with her all the time. And Maria is so good she’s even begun to correct her mother’s pronunciation. I was never much of an endurance runner!

    1. Mistress Borghese:
Our cats in California would not go in any litter except one brand. They actually held it for three days when we couldn’t use their brand!

  7. i was going to suggest something similar to Steve. Have you tried shredding the paper towels instead of folding them so neatly? Cats are really amazing the way they want to hide it. A dog could care less. Also seems like there should be some type of liter that isn’t damaging to the wound. If there isn’t there should be. Someone needs to invent it.

    1. Claudia:
Too lazy to shred paper. But I don’t know if it would help much with these two. There is newspaper pellet litter that we used in California for our recovering cat. I haven’t seen it here — although I haven’t looked. On the other hand, both our cats in California refused to use it and didn’t “go” for three days.

  8. I woke up this morning to 2 inches of fresh snow again, so your beautiful orchids are a good antidote! The poor jackrabbits around here are so confused, they don’t know whether it’s spring or winter. Half of them are still all white and the other half are mottled brown & white… hopefully, the Easter Bunny can still navigate his way to my house though, LOL!

Buy SG and yourself some tasty chocolate bunnies and forget your troubles — Happy Easter!

    1. Tundra Bunny:
I have a feeling there’ll be good deals on Easter chocolates next week. I can’t believe some of the storms in North America. Then again, it’s still raining here. Our reservoirs are no longer at drought levels!

    1. Debra:
Too bad there’s no video. Apparently they were both moaning in self-pity.
