Here are some more photos from my visit to Málaga and the Center for Contemporary Art last week. Graffiti can make me a bit crazy. The vandalism, the mess, the inconsideration. But I do appreciate talent. So, I love when cities initiate graffiti projects, as has been done in the Soho neighborhood, that encourage artists to share their works in more manageable and less harmful ways. Málaga has its share of public artists as well as vandals. Here’s a bit of both. Sometimes, thankfully, the vandalism produces art. Other times, as you saw in Saturday’s post, it does not. My latest plan is to do a graffiti art walking tour of Málaga City.
I had an exceptional birthday day yesterday. The appointment with the new psychiatrist was a pleasure. I got some help and some great advice. Around the corner was the Carmen Thyssen Museum, which has as a main focus Spanish art of the 19th century. Not my favorite period for Spanish art, but I truly enjoyed the collection. And the special exhibits were inspiring. I had a surprisingly delicious and beautiful lunch at the museum café. More to come on all that.
I arrived home to surprises from my sister-friend Susan in Oregon. Then dinner last night with Old Jessica, our dear friend and my first English “student” in Fuengirola. The Old is to differentiate her from New Jesica, another dear friend and a more recent English student in Fuengirola. I suppose she would prefer if I just called them Jessica With Two Esses and Jesica With One S. But I really like the rise I get out of her when I call her Old Jessica.
Photos and stories to come on Susan’s gifts and dinner with Two Esses. I have so many photos and stories waiting in the wings. Right now, it’s time to get to the gym and work off yesterday’s two desserts.

Lots of talent, lots of hard work there.
David:
The talent is awesome.
Interesting street art! And what a stellar birthday you’ve had!
Debra:
It really has been a great birthday.
Art is such a subjective thing that I always gravitate to what catches my eye.
Happy to hear your birthday went well.
Jim:
I have so much more to explore in Málaga.
Graffiti always open to self-expression because as you mentioned there just might be a creation that just does it for you.
Ron:
Sometimes, the talent of the unrecognized graffiti artists blows me away.
Happy belated birthday. Street art/grafitti is beginning to seem dated to me, so 80s.
Frank:
Thanks. It was a great birthday this year. So grateful.
I like this street art much better than the large paintings in the museum the other day. Glad you had wonderful birthday and continued celebrations during your birthmonth!
Wilma:
I must admit, I do too. It’s been a great birthday and I’m filled with gratitude — and chocolate.
You don’t even need to be in a museum to see the art!
Bob:
Málaga is a great city for commissioned public art. I suppose I should do a post about all the sculptures.
I’m with Wilma on the graffiti, Scoot.
Deedles:
I am, too.
Glad you had a good birthday. I look forward to seeing more photos. I agree with you about the graffiti. Sometimes I view it as vandalism, sometimes not.
mcpersonalspace54:
Sevilla had a graffiti project along the river some time ago. Some amazing art.
Who is the paz y libertad woman? So happy you had a good birthday.
Love,
Janie
janiejunebug:
I haven’t read anything about her being anyone in particular.
Cool murals and graffiti! The black chameleon looks like Banksy’s artwork to me. In any event, a dynamic place to live!
Tundra Bunny:
I love that black chameleon.
You found some great street art there! I like the ROA piece and I’d recognize Shepard Fairey’s work anywhere. (Never knew his first name is Frank!) I like graffiti when it’s like the egg or some of the other artistic pieces you photographed here. I don’t even mind a simple tag if it has some artistic quality (and sometimes they do).
Steve:
I need to familiarize myself with these artists. I agree completely about graffiti.
Malaga looks like an outdoor museum of modern (including Pop) art
Kirk:
It becomes more that way every year. I think it’s now considered second to Barcelona for museums, too.
I too liked the lizard
Urspo:
I love that lizard. So well done.
I love street art and murals, I am fairly certain I disgracefully failed to wish you a Happy Birthday. I am glad it was good and hope your year ahead is filled with good times, laughter, love and, of course, good health.
Sassybear:
Thanks so much. As you can tell, it was a great time.
