Toilets and Tartas / Aseos y tartas

San Geraldo has two good old friends, Cindy and Darius, from his early university days. I suppose I should call them my good old friends, as well, since I’ve known them since the 1980s. Cindy is a loyal reader of my blog and they stay in regular contact. We’ve even seen them a couple of times here in Spain.

Cindy and Darius have two friends, Barb and Jerry, who are currently traveling around Spain and Cindy suggested we get together while they’re in Córdoba. They’re staying in the judería (the Jewish quarter). We met them last night for dinner and it was immediate friendship. So pleasant, interesting, fun, and easy to be with. We can’t wait to see them again Saturday for lunch.

San Geraldo found a highly rated restaurant, Bodegas Mezquita Corregidor, 5 minutes from where they’re staying. We met them on the corner and walked over. And what a find! There are four Bodegas Mezquitas in Córdoba. We’ve been to another in the judería several times. Obviously we liked it, but we liked this one even more. San Geraldo hadn’t remembered the name and simply chose based on reviews and location. Beautiful, warm and welcoming inside. An exceptional Spanish menu with a varied selection. The service was exceptional by Lucille, whose real name is Lucia but she loves the Little Richard song. I wonder if she’s ever heard “[You Picked a Fine Time to Leave Me,] Lucille.”

To top things off, I wore the sweater my mother knitted in 1949 and I perfectly coordinated with the tile work and ceramic sink in the bathroom. I love when that happens (click here). Note: I stole the interior photo from the restaurant website.

Me pregunto si alguna vez habrá escuchada “[You Picked a Fine Time to Leave Me,] Lucille”.

• Battered Caliphate eggplants with a Pedro Ximénez sweet wine reduction and sesame seeds
• My remojón (Orange, cod and almond salad).
• SG’s Bull’s tail risotto with cured “sheep” cheese.
• Risotto de rabo de toro y queso curado de oveja
• Torrija (click here) with coconut soup and cinnamon ice cream. SG ordered his, above, without the coconut soup.
• My Cordoban pastry (puff pastry filled with angel hair, sugar, and cinnamon). Angel hair is jam made from the candied fibers of  the cidra squash. My mouth waters just looking at the photo.
• As for the blue accents, I was wearing blue Calvin Klein briefs.
• Jerry, Barb, Jerry, and yours truly.
• Jerry, Barb, Jerry y yo mismo.

  1. That sweater is great! Long may it live. I’ll be rocking to Lucille the rest of the day and wishing for cinnamon ice cream. Hmmmm . . . I haven’t gotten out my ice cream maker in a long time.

    Love,
    Janie

I can’t wait to go back to the restaurant. Cinnamon ice cream would have been a nice addition to my pastry. Wow, your own ice cream maker. Do you keep Ben and Jerry in the pantry? The sweater still looks like now. Amazing.

    1. Ms. Moon:
That old post was wonderful and Hank’s got a gift with words (genetic maybe?)
And I learned some more by being back 5 years. Loved it.

  2. Boud here. That sweater has achieved iconic status. And I love the note about the hidden blue touches. What good friends you have, and keep.

    1. Boud:
We hope soon to establish friendships here in Córdoba. Not so easy. Great to have regular visitors from other places.

    1. Bob:
The style of the sweater makes it work with a tight fit, too, but it is surprising that it doesn’t look ridiculous when I wear it now.

  3. You matched very nicely to that pretty bathroom…..glad that you didn’t feel the need to show your blue grundies !!
Your dessert looked tasty, but the rest of the food didn’t appeal to me.
    Have a lovely weekend.
    Frances.

    1. Frances:
I rarely feel the need to show my blue “grundies” (a new word for me)! It was a very Spanish meal. Maybe not for everyone. But my dessert was exceptional no matter where you’re from.

  4. Looks delightful, places we need to visit. No modeling of the blue accents?

I worked with the ex-wife of the guy who wrote the lyrics to that song. She kept trying to get an increase in child support based on the popularity of the song.

    1. Kirk:
I wasn’t even imagined yet! My father wore it for years. It was passed on to me in the late 1960s.

  5. Very inviting, and the food looks fabulous. The sweater is amazing, and back on trend now. I love it when I have clothes that have come back in style a 2nd or 3rd time. One of the privileges of advanced age.

    1. wickedhamster:
I’ve been wearing the sweater since high school and have always loved it. It’s a style that looked good loose and now form-fitting.

  6. What a great looking place! I’m glad that you four had this wonderful experience 🙂 (with more to come! although… you’re probably wrapping up lunch right now)

    1. Judy C:
I loved this place. Can’t wait to go back. Lunch was another pleasure with Barb and Jerry.

  7. You and your sweater look great in the bathroom! (that’s a compliment I never imagined paying anyone)

    The pastry looks divine.

    1. Kelly:
I’ll take whatever I can get!
The pastry was so perfect, I’m still thinking about it.

    1. Steve:
I just washed and folded the underwear. I’ll take a picture before I put it in the drawer. 😉

  8. Now there’s a worm I’ll have in my ear for most of the day. Ya picked a fine time to leave me, Lucille. High school days.

    1. Walt the Fourth:
It’s a powerful ear worm. I’ve been singing it in my head for two days.

    1. Debra:
I’m proud of that. I might need to start calling ahead so I can always coordinate with the bathrooms.
