Knockers and a stone, dear / Aldabas y una piedra, querido

I took a taxi ride with San Geraldo to Leroy Merlin (similar to Home Depot in the States or B&Q in the UK). It’s in a semi-rural area about 15 minutes west of the city. San Geraldo thought he would find some of the things he needs for his aquarium project. We had lunch first at McDonalds. Horrible. He then headed to Leroy Merlin while I went walking around the shopping center to see what else was there.

I first stopped at Sakito Home, a low-end (LOW-end) Chinese home goods store that smelled like an explosion in a cheap air freshener factory. I lasted a minute without gagging, and I left. Slightly further on was Jysk, a Danish chain specializing in furniture and housewares. It smelled good and I used to love to visit the shop in Fuengirola. I enjoyed myself and could have filled a few bags. Instead, I bought a comforter set and throw-pillow covers.

Then I hooked up with San Geraldo, who had only found a few things he needed, and we taxied home. In the elevator, SG realized he still had his sunglasses on, and he was holding the large plastic bucket he had purchased with both hands, so asked me to remove his glasses. He said, “Just put them in the bucket.” I said, “But there’s a hole in the bucket,” and we both started to sing.

When we entered the apartment, he complained that he’d be singing the song the rest of the day. I said, “Nah, you won’t remember the lyrics.” I sang, “With what shall I fix it, dear Liza, dear Liza?” And he replied “With a stone, dear Henry, dear Henry, dear Henry.” And that was the end of that.

    1. Judy C:
Yes, I did. I wondered how many people would notice that. I’d hoped for most.

  1. I learned that song when I was in fifth grade, I think. I hated it then, too. Also, those knockers are giving mine an inferiority complex!

    1. Deedles:
My first thought was, you heard “The Night Dolly Parton Was Almost Mine” in 5th grade? Oh, please, I know how old you are! I remember seeing Odetta and Harry Belafonte perform that on TV when I was very little (only 4) and I’ve loved it ever since, but really only their rendition.

    1. Steve:
Yeah, the new bucket with the hole. It’s the strangest thing. And his bucket is plastic, not wood. So fixing it with straw won’t do any good.

  2. Even the door knockers are interesting in Cordoba! Love the lions, the seahorse, and the dolphins (or medieval sea serpents?).

  3. If a bucket didn’t have an ‘ole in it, you couldn’t put owt in! Been watching All Creatures, fell back into broad Yorkshire. Boud.

  4. I’m with Judy C – the first thing I thought when I saw the word “knockers” in the title was “Oh, it’s a tribute to Dolly”… 😍

Oh, SG and his misheard lyrics. Jx

    1. Jon:
Ah, San Geraldo: Welcome, 5th Avenue, welcome… to cabaret, oh cabaret, a cabaret. I’m glad you caught my subtle knockers reference.

    1. Mary Moon:
I’m so confused. First I thought you were referring to Hole in the Bucket! I take it you never saw the musical, Pump Boys and Dinettes. We loved it and I think you would, too. It takes place on Highway 57, somewhere between Frog Level and Smyrna, North Carolina. This was not one of my favorite numbers from the show but it was the only one about Dolly Parton.

      1. Good enough for me! I will hear the song now with new ears. And there is indeed a Frog Level community in NC.

  5. “…explosion in a cheap air freshener factory.”

My eyes water just imagining what that must smell like!

    1. Kirk:
I kind of proud of the simile. It did make my eyes water (and my stomach do a couple of flips). Truly disgusting.

    1. Bob,
Not a great loss. I just wanted to share a Dolly reference that not many would be making.
