It hasn’t been the greatest few days what with my digestion issues (yesterday was fine), my hurting hip (much better again today), and the dizzies (gone), but there were still some incredible bright spots in those dreary days. San Geraldo for one.
Thursday I chatted with Judy C who brightens any day. It doesn’t matter how I’m feeling, Judy is a joy and an exceptional human being. And SG got to meet her this time, which made us all happy.
Friday was another chat with old friends that made the world feel like a better place, even if it’s not. I’ve shared a story about Blair and Marie before (click here). Blair and I worked together at a magazine publishing house in Boston before SG and I moved to California (the first time). Blair was a gifted art director and I was the typography department (the entire department). We immediately became fast friends and meeting Marie soon thereafter was love at first sight. We four were often together and they were difficult to leave behind when we headed west.
San Geraldo and I were only together 6 months when I first starting working with Blair. She and Marie were together a year I think. Strangers always knew we were two pairs of love birds; they just always assumed we were paired differently. One evening, we were walking along the waterfront in Weymouth after dinner upstairs at Blair and Marie’s condo when some passing strangers trilled “Hello young lovers whoever you are.”
We stayed close and in touch for more than 10 years and then, well, things happen. Our regular contact lessened until we finally lost touch for years. We would try to reconnect and somehow just never made it work. Contact was sporadic since the late ’90s. And then Blair wrote a couple of years ago. At long last, we had a video chat yesterday and it was magical. It didn’t hurt that they are both still beautiful and instantly recognizable even after all these years. I was a bit worried that I should warn them in advance about my bald head and gray beard. Of course I didn’t need to be so shallow.
We did have other old friends of the same vintage and, when we saw them on video after about 15 years, one immediately said, “Oh my god. We’ve gotten so old.” Time had changed more than just that. It was not a magical reconnection. Nothing like the reconnection with Blair and Marie. It was as if no time had passed — except for all that has passed! We still have so many stories to share with each other.
Today’s photos are completely unrelated, which is often how I do things. This is what it looks like inside my brain (on a good day). And now I have to go up to the roof to retrieve the laundry I forgot overnight.

Huggs! Daniel Radcliffe looks great and looks like he is enjoying the stage.
He ‘s certainly become amazing in the range of roles he can pull off convincingly, as in this ‘Merrily……’ which I’ve seen live on stage twice (different productions). Must investigate to see if I can find the full version of this particular filmed stage production. Looks quite wonderful.
Raybeard:
SG and I recently watched this filmed stage production from YouTube. I think this is the one: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CqBo-uSQcAQ
You are so lucky to have seen it on stage!
David Godfrey:
We recently watched the stage version which had been recorded. They were all wonderful.
Sweet stories. And it’s always nice to reconnect with old friends.
And I imagine you four were cute couples no matter how you were configured!
Bob:
We were adorable (and so frickin’ young).
Yeah, there’s nothing like good old friends, ones who knew you and loved you “way back when” you were all young together. They remember who you were in those days and how you got to here from there. Nothing beats that shared history and affection! Glad you reconnected with Blair and Marie!
Debra:
It’s rare to be able to pick up where you left off decades ago, as if no time had passed. Blaire and I were alike in so many ways, too.
Most friends fade
Or they don’t make the grade.
New ones are quickly made,
Perfect as long as they’re new.
But us, old friends,
What’s to discuss, old friends?
Here’s to us!
Who’s like us?
Damn few!
I like that feeling – reconnecting with someone you were close to, then drifted away, then when you catch up again it’s as if you’d never been apart.
Jx
Jon:
Exactly and the song truly says it.
Of course, being Sondheim, things are not as simple as the song implies – I assume you’ve seen the show? It’s brilliant – the entire thing is in reverse, from present-day to past, and this is the finale. Poignant. Jx
Jon:
Oh, yes, a much more complicated song (of course) if you follow the story. We never saw it on stage but we did see the stage version on TV. Powerful.
I love the two couples story! Yes,I expect a lot of onlookers would mismatch the people. Lovely to reconnect and find it still works. That’s not always the case, as I’ve found to my surprise.
I’m glad you’re feeling better. You’ve certainly had your moments lately. And the fruit still life is a keeper. Boud
Boud:
I wonder if people would still mismatch us. That was all the way back in 1981 and 1982. Blaire and I hadn’t even reached 30 yet!
Our relationships with old friends are some of the most life-sustaining and life-enriching things there can be.
Mary Moon:
The friendships you have tend to be so rich and deep. Very fortunate.
Sometimes people just grow apart but the ones that stick make up for it.
I rather like that last picture of the orchids.
ellen abbott:
Yes, here’s to the ones that stick.
I had a good time the orchid shadows. I’m sure I’m not done.
Ohhhh, thank you for your sweet, kind words, dear Mitchell! You know the feeling is mutual 🙂
I’m so glad that you had a wonderful chat with Blair and Marie!
Judy C:
Thank YOU for being, Seine Judeet!
I forgot to note my appreciation of the orchid shadows. Lovely
Boud
Boud:
Thanks. It’s going to be another new fixation I think.
Your orchids are amazing, Scoot! I had no idea they could last so long. Do they require special care?
Tundra BUNNY,
One of the great things about orchids is how long they last. I buy the ones with the most buds. The flowers last a good long time. I keep reading about all the special care. All I’ve done so far is soak them in a container of water once a week so that they take up the water from the bottom. I’ll probably need to do more to get them to bloom again and again.
In the past year I have reconnected with many and each time it’s a mix up whether it will feel like no time has passed or the magic is gone.
Urspo,
One never knows. (Do one?)
With so much going on lately, I’m finding it very hard to keep up with blogging. I’m sorry to hear of you feeling of woe lately, and hopefully happier days are ahead. Those orchids alone are enough to garner a smile. Hugs to you dear.
Thanks, Mads. Hugs back.
“Merrily” is one of my favorite musicals. Yeah, when chatting with old friends, “we’ve gotten so old” is not something you want to hear. I’m glad your reunion with Blair and Marie went better.
