I’m still trying to pay a visit to all the Fernandine churches from the 13th century, but even if I make a point of avoiding mass, I still manage to come upon someone praying and I don’t like to disturb their observance with my picture taking. I wonder what they’re all praying for. If I believed, I know what I’d be praying for and I might never have time to come up for air.

San Nicolás (the Parish of San Nicolás of La Villa) is a Fernandine church I’ve been inside three times without timing it right. There were only two or three people praying the last time, but there were also three people giving confession at very exposed confessionals. It felt disrespectful to wander tourist-like. I could actually hear some of what they were saying. So I left. I would love to get some shots of the confessionals which surprise me by how exposed they are.

Although the church was built in the 13th century on the orders of Ferdinand III (the Saint), the main portal was created in the 16th century and major changes were made to the church in the 17th and 18th centuries. Construction of the tower was concluded in 1496.

After the church, I wandered the city once more and ended at a cafe with tables behind the church. When I arrived, I stopped at the door where the waiter was standing, greeted him warmly, and told him what I wanted while pointing to the table where I would sit. Most tables were empty. He asked, “Table 4?”

I had never been there before. I glanced back at the tables and saw no numbers. I pointed it out again and said it was the table behind the two women. He said, “Table 4, yes?” I nodded. I thought maybe there were numbers painted on the edges of the tables, or table cards I couldn’t see.

I checked the four tables along my way. Nope. I figured if I hadn’t selected Table 4, he’d be able to find me, and he did. I probably should have learned all the table numbers while I was there.

The photo above is of a home decor and garden shop not far from where I had coffee. I would love having a number of things in that window. I like big busts, I cannot lie. Inspired by Sir Mix-a-lot and Baby Got Back. I would share the video but it seems so inappropriate.

Inspirado en Sir Mix-a-lot y Baby Got Back.
