To explain the title, Moose the Cat’s real name is Mussy (rhymes with Juicy). That’s the name he was given by the shelter where he lived with his brother, Dudo, until they were 10 months old. We had intended to name them ourselves, but they had microchips and passports with those names, so we left them that way (as if it mattered).
I liked the name Dudo. I tend to call him Dudes and he responds to both names. I thought shortening Mussy to Moose would be cute, but I do often call him Mussy because I think he’ll respond more readily. He doesn’t. He enjoys pointedly ignoring whatever name is used, unless there’s a treat, or if he’s ready for a cuddle. San Geraldo mostly calls them by the wrong names or some variation of Moodo and Doosy.
Dudo is doing well and is back to the vet Monday to see if his thyroid medication needs adjusting. He’s putting on weight and he’s not as desperately hungry as before, so it’s clearly working. He doesn’t always scarf down his treats now, but we have to break them of the habit of expecting something every two hours. Good luck to us!
Today’s photos are mostly of Moose. He’s adopted the new comfy chair. Dudo tends to sleep on one of the sofas. The living room furniture is covered in towels and throws to protect the fabric from claws and skid marks. We’re so elegant.
Suelo llamarlo Dudes y responde a ambos nombres.

Cats are like me, they will respond to almost any name, as long as it is in a kind tone of voice, or has a treat attached to it.
David:
Travel Cat!
We have those same couches and chairs!!! Well, I mean, we juse towels, too, to protect them from the cats!!
None of our cats are called by their “original” names. Consuelo was called Molly when we adopted her and her name was instantly changed. But for some reason Consuelo has devolved into Squiddle, or Squiddlesquee, or Squee or Squee Squid … and she responds to them all, though she runs a little faster if you call her Pretty Baby.
Bob:
Consuelo is a much better name than Molly. And Squiddle is the natural nickname for Consuelo. Kind of like Pepe for José.
Well, that’s how it is with animals. We settle for less than perfect in terms of decor, but we get a lot of affection in return. 🙂
Steve:
I never thought I’d be the type of person to have decor like this.
Just what I needed this morning after the stress of yesterday – a post full of kitty pics! Cats have passports?
Kelly:
Yes, they have passports (with a record of vaccines for travel). They don’t include a photo or paw prints, but they have to be microchipped.
I’ve always wondered how you came up with their names. Now I’ll have to wonder how the shelter came up with their names.
Kirk:
I’ve always wondered where the names came from. Dudo means “I doubt.” Mussy doesn’t mean anything as far as I know.
Boud here. That’s how it is with animals. You choose lovely furniture then cover it up with all kinds of throws to protect it from the residents.
I love sg’s variations on their names. I suppose they don’t worry about it, as long as food and treats arrive on time.
Boud:
All our throws used to match which made it just a little less trashy. Maybe it’s time to buy another complete set. Dudo does clearly know his name and he sometimes looks confused when SG gets it wrong.
Ohhhhh, how I love to see these guys!
Judy C:
So do I.
This made me happy, Scoot. By the way, I love it when others call you that. Let’s start a movement .I remember when I could sit like that first picture. *Sigh*.
We had to put Bella out of her suffering at the end of January. We both cried harder over that dog than we ever had for people. I still break down when I remember her challenging me to zoomies. We were both equally decrepit and she always won. Oh dear, I wasn’t going to be a downer today. Oops. Anyway, the fur brats always bring a smile. Oh, I also put towels on my furniture. I don’t have a problem with Cujo, towels are just more comfortable than diapers. Cujo doesn’t wear diapers yet, but he’ll probably be joining me in a few years. Sorry for the ramble.
Deedles:
I love it when others call me Scoot, too. Susan refused to because she said that was your special name for me. So she called me Toots. So sorry to read about Bella. That’s a big loss. I’m glad you have so much love in your house. Consider yourself hugged by me.
Why am I not surprised that your meticulously-chosen decor is now well-and-truly rearranged to suit the whims of the boys..? Jx
Jon:
It does do a number on my anal-retentive tendencies, but we know who rules the roost.
Oh, Mussy Moose Moose, I love your little punim! Dudo’s looking a whole lot better too — the new meds and extra treats are obviously working…. Photos of your boys never fail to put a smile on my face, Thanks, Scoot!
Tundra Bunny:
Thanks for loving them. Back to the vet with Dudo tomorrow. Give us strength… especially SG.
How did I miss this post? You HAD written about the cats. I’m sorry.
Ms. Moon
Ms. Moonsigh:
Better late than never. Glad you saw them.
I missed this post too! WHAT is this world coming to?
Debra:
I was thinking of writing you to let you know missed it. I knew you wanted to see the boys.
You know cats have three different names, from T.S. Eliot?
Urspo:
SG has a hard enough time remembering one.
Cats with passports? I’m jealous. I used to have a passport, but I never got to use it. I’m also jealous because I can’t pose the way Moose is in the first photo. I’ve lost all my flexibility and become very boring.
Love,
Janie
janiejunebug:
I can’t do that position anymore either. But given what Moose was doing before I snapped, maybe that’s OK.
