Graceland and glutes / Graceland y glúteos

I was finally able to get close enough with my mobile to get some shots of the magnolias that are blooming all over town. The first was one morning and the next two were late that night right around the corner where a row of trees shade a bus stop.

The sign above intrigued me. The shadows cast made it look to me like a beautifully artful design as opposed to a plain white background. The new dental office will be in the building with the beautiful Egyptian bronze bas relief (click here). I hope they’ll preserve and not sell it. Although, if they do want to sell, it would look great in our house.

I didn’t get out early enough today and the temperature is now up to 33˚C/92˚F heading for around 40C/104F. So, I may just tough it out after lunch and enjoy the sunshine.

I am back to exercising and stretching daily and am feeling great. I had commented that I didn’t have a good space for workouts. My office with all its furniture leaves little free space. The foyer is big enough, but it’s got no windows and minimal natural light; I find it dreary for a workout. San Geraldo suggested moving the dining room table against the wall, since it’s only used, rarely, when we have company. That gave me a large space with plenty of natural light. I pop in my AirPods and jam away. Paul Simon (Graceland album) is my current inspiration. I’m loving it. I don’t have free weights but I may invest in something simple, maybe some dumbbells. My body weight workouts have been great but are already not entirely challenging enough. I love the happy soreness from my workouts. My glutes woke up.

He vuelto a hacer ejercicio y estiramientos a diario y me siento genial. Me encanta.

• Andryala integrifolia. Common name: Common adryala or sneeze grass. Unlike any other species in the Asteraceae family (which consists of over 32,000 species), it contains latex. (Sorry. I found that interesting.)
• Andryala integrifolia. Me pareció interesante.)
• Bougainvillea. I had learned to always trim vertical stems from bougainvillea. This will get lopped off, but it looks so cool right now.
• Buganvilla.
• My (former) gym’s tower up front. I have no idea what purpose it serves, if any. The tower of San Cayetano, center, (Santuario de Nuestra Señora Madre del Carmen Coronada San Cayetano). Catchy.
Pegadizo.

We pass the bas relief most days. Beautiful. And, yeah, I had a hard time when I searched out and found that old blog post.

  1. The reflection in that sign is amazing. How utterly perspicacious of you to catch that. By strange coincidence, if I had a daughter I was going to name her Nuestra Señora Madre del Carmen Coronada San Cayetano; it sounded way cooler than just plain “Mary”. Happily, Nature in its wisdom made sure that wouldn’t happen…

    1. wickedhamster:
I let SG walk ahead while I stopped for pictures. The shadow art was mesmerizing. I wonder what your daughter’s nickname would have been. Or maybe you’d be the type of parent strongly against nicknames.

  2. Wow wow wow, the quality of your magnolia blossoms photos… Mitchell, they are so beautiful to look at.
    Thank you 🙂

I also want to say that Jerry’s thoughtfulness and attention, and the love that it shows, are so sweet and heartwarming.. it might seem like a small thing, but his suggestion for you to move the table, to make the space you need for something important to you… it just all connects to his paying attention to you, and thinking of what would make your life happier… love is such a beautiful thing 🙂 (He could have just been a person who said, “Hmm” and left it at that, when you told him that you couldn’t figure out a good space to do your stretching and exercising… it’s no small thing in our lives, having someone who cares and listens and helps you through life. 🙂 You know that I miss my “someone”. )

Also, remember when you mentioned something like air singing through your lips? and I said that I didn’t know what that was? Now I think I do… as I walk out in public, like at our Botanical Garden, I have wonderful music playing in my ears, and I can’t sing out loud, because I’m in public, so I’ve noticed that I’m air singing, I guess! Singing along with the song, with my lips moving and no sound coming out 🙂 I get it!

    1. Judy C:
I agree with you about Jerry’s thoughtfulness. Some might call it codependence but he always jumps in to help find a solution. I don’t think you’ve quite got the “singing” I meant. It’s not singing, humming, or even lip-syncing. It’s just breathing in and out to the lyrical beat of a song. And it makes it easy to hyperventilate, so not a good thing for me to do.

  3. Love the photos, Scoot! I have a magnolia tree in my back yard. I take it for granted, yet it blooms magnificently every year. I believe it’s just trying to get attention from the redwoods back there. The roses and gardenias are ignoring them. They are secure in their places in the yard. I don’t know what threw me into this flight of fancy, but I’m going with the flow. It’s going to be 101 f today, marked down from 103f yesterday. My glutes can stay in their comas. It’s too freakin’ hot!

    1. Deedles:
We have never had a magnolia tree. I love them. I’d be in your backyard every day (and night) taking pictures and just standing and admiring.

    1. ellen abbott:
I used to be so consistent with my workouts. I’m hoping this is me restarting.

    1. larrymuffin:
As you can tell, I’m totally obsessed with all the flowers around town.

  4. I can practically smell those Magnolia grandiflora – beautiful! Jx

    PS “Workouts”? I don’t understand the concept… 😜

    1. Jon:
I love to work out. SG thinks it’s nuts. We have a friend who told us he remembered having a muscle. Once. He thinks it was around 1993.

  5. Your photos of the magnolia blossoms are perfection personified.
    Amazing.
I’m glad to hear you’re working out and enjoying it and the results. “Graceland” is one of my favorite albums ever. I’ve never seen Paul Simon but I did get to see Ladysmith Black Mambazo when they did a tour a long time ago and I swear- it was one of the best concerts I’d ever seen and I’ve seen some good concerts.

    1. Ms. Moon:
I had just about given up on getting close enough to magnolia blossoms. SG even scoured the tree for a better one for me at the bus stop. I adore Ladysmith Black Mambazo. I wish I could have seen them live.

  6. For a split second, I thought your first photo was of Dior or Chanel packaging… then I read Clinica Dental, LOL!

Your magnolia photos are stunning, Scoot! I love magnolia scented things, though I’ve often wondered what the real blooms smell like. Those little yellow asters are cute too — they remind me of the many dandelion bouquets I used to pick when I was little. My pet rabbit LOVED the milky sap in the leaves and stems, but now you have me wondering if there was latex in them… I hope not!

    1. Tundra Bunny:
The shadows would be worth reproducing for product packaging and fabrics… and gift wrap… and. No worries for your late pet rabbit. This aster is Mediterranean and wouldn’t grow where you are.

      1. Yes, they’re very painful, but they do prescribe some pills that make the pain almost worth it.

  7. I’d forgotten wonderful Ladysmith Black Mambazo. Never heard them in concert, just recordings. Now I’m going to look them up again.
Definitely get a set of free weights, or resistance bands, or both. They’re great for strength and joints. You’ll feel the improvement very fast. Boud

  8. The glutes are awake!!!
    I’ll alert the media!!

It’s going to be 103 here with a “feels like” of 110! We are indoors in the AC doing some cleaning after having new floors installed this week.
