My father called my mother the queen of the “I Shoulda” club. If there was a regret to be had, she had it. She “shoulda” bought a different dining room set in 1964. She never liked the one she bought. She replaced it some time after we moved to Spain in 2011. She regretted that one, too. She shoulda bought different bedroom furniture for my bedroom in 1965. San Geraldo and I got rid of it after she died in 2016.

So, I try my best to not regret anything. As Steven Sondheim wrote:

“I chose and my world was shaken. So what. The choice my have been mistaken, the choosing was not. You have to move on.” 

Here are some of the clothes I coulda bought in Bergen. No regrets though. I offered to buy the Calvin Klein thongs pictured above for San Geraldo. They had his size. But, he had no interest. (And I’m so glad.) I myself owned a thong a very long time ago. I wore it. Once. Speaking of which, I’m still dragging my ass, but I continue on the upswing.

And, finally, have you ever heard of Moomins? Moomins are characters in a series of books and a comic strip by Tove Jansson, a Finnish artist. Moomins are huge in the shops in Bergen. Dolls, toys, lamps, books. But, please, someone explain to me the characters on the coffee mug near the bottom of this post. They’re apparently called Hattifatteners and they become charged up with electricity and start glowing and rocking back and forth. I “shoulda” bought a lamp.

Mi padre llamó a mi madre la reina del club “I Shoulda”. Si había algo que lamentar, lo tenía. Ella “debería” comprar un juego de comedor diferente en 1964. Nunca le gustó el que compró. Lo reemplazó en algún momento después de que nos mudamos a España en 2011. También se arrepintió de eso. Debería haber comprado otros muebles para mi dormitorio en 1965. San Geraldo y yo nos deshicimos de ellos después de que ella muriera en 2016.

Entonces, hago todo lo posible para no arrepentirme de nada. Como escribió Steven Sondheim:

“Elegí y mi mundo se estremeció. Y qué. La elección puede haber sido un error, la elección no lo fue. Tienes que seguir adelante." 

Estas son algunas de las prendas que podría haber comprado en Bergen. Sin embargo, no me arrepiento. Ofrecí comprar las tangas de Calvin Klein que se muestran arriba para San Geraldo.
