When I entered the Picasso Museum, I checked in at the desk. A guard then checked my ticket and directed me to the next guard at the entry to the central courtyard who checked my ticket and told me to head down the hall to the left and then turn left into the first gallery. I’ve been there a number of times and repeated the directions back to the docent because that left and left always led to the start of the permanent exhibition and I had only paid for the special exhibit of Picasso sculptures. She confirmed what I repeated. I entered and everything looked the same as always. And no sculptures. I browsed and then headed for the next room. It was all just as I had left it last time. And only one sculpture. I wouldn’t have minded except that I didn’t have a lot of time before I was to meet San Geraldo for lunch (a 15-minute walk from the museum). The special exhibit would be just right. I walked through the large gallery and told another security guard what I had been told, and that it didn’t look right to me. She apologized and sent me into the courtyard and up the stairs across the way. The special exhibit was exactly where I expected it to be.

You can see below some of what I saw. I didn’t photograph most of the sculptures that were displayed behind glass. It’s not a large exhibit but, if you like Picasso’s work, well worth the visit. The majority of the pieces were called “Head of a Woman.” I didn’t download the audio tour to my phone because I didn’t have time. I might go back for that. In our times, Picasso himself is understandably judged under a much harsher light. Still, his work inspired me in my early years of art while his selfishness, narcissism, and misogyny did not.

Luego, un guardia revisó mi boleto y me dirigió al siguiente guardia en la entrada al patio central, quien revisó mi boleto y me dijo que bajara por el pasillo hacia la izquierda y luego girara a la izquierda hacia la primera galería. No es una exposición grande pero, si te gusta la obra de Picasso, vale la pena visitarla. La mayoría de las piezas se llamaban “Cabeza de mujer”. No descargué el recorrido en audio a mi teléfono porque no tenía tiempo. Podría volver por eso. En nuestros tiempos, el propio Picasso es comprensiblemente juzgado bajo una luz mucho más dura.   1. Exactly what every 17 year old girl needs–a 45-year-old man. I know I didn’t need such a man to take advantage of me when I was 17 or 25, or even a bit older. You are definitely not a Picasso because you are not a misogynist.

      I still love his art, but it’s so difficult to not consider his behavior in more modern light. What a genius. What a jerk.

  2. I have always appreciated his work. Separating the art from the artist’s personal life can be difficult for some. You expressed it very well, Mitchell. Brings to mind Michael Jackson………

      And the problem with Michael Jackson is that he lived in contemporary times. But nothing has ever been confirmed. What a mess. As for Picasso, the truth is readily available. Artists can make it so difficult. I used to love Eric Clapton. Now I can’t listen to hi songs without getting disgusted.

  3. That picture you’re questioning where you didn’t see the woman’s head? You don’t want to know what I thought it was, but you can imagine! I never got into Picasso’s sculptures more as paintings.

        I have no doubt he was an artistic genius. Too bad his awful behavior has damaged appreciation of his art. But he was the first artist to have an impact on me when I was very young and I can’t get enough of it. Glad to live in his hometown.

            Van Gogh was my other. I went to the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam for the first time when I was 21 and I thought I’d died and gone to heaven.

      I bumped into neighbors from León when I was leaving the building to catch the train. They both grimace at the thought of spending time in the Picasso Museum. He’s not for everyone.

  4. Interesting that everything is abstract except for Picasso’s left hand. Unless that’s abstract, too, and actual hand was cubist!

      I love the idea of Picasso’s actual hand being cubist and that hand being an abstraction. Very clever!

  5. I’m glad he put the word “woman” in the names of the sculptures. With the exception of the pregnant woman, I wouldn’t have known they were women.

  6. Looks like a lovely museum. Yes it is the head of a woman with her long hair. I do not know what you saw.
