The year of the cat / El año del gato

La versión en español está después de la versión en inglés.

According to Dudo and Moose, every year is the year of the cat. Or maybe it’s just the year of Dudo or Moose. (They don’t like to share the spotlight.) The coming year is the year of the dragon in Chinese zodiac. Cat, dragon, same thing.

We’re headed to Elena and Tynan’s for New Year’s Eve dinner. Elena is a great cook and host, and the company is the best. We’re passing on the three decanters of infused vodka from Christmas Eve. And I don’t have to wash all the dishes!

I didn’t wash the dishes two nights ago either. We decided to have dinner at Mesón Salvador. The joint was jumping and the service was excellent. I don’t think anyone on staff stopped moving the entire time we were there, and they seemed to be enjoying themselves. I had Ensalada del Mesón with goat cheese, raisins, walnuts, bacon, spinach, and mixed greens. Heaven.

Palm trees are being removed in sections along the Paseo to allow for the infrastucture (sewage) project. Monk parakeets live and nest in the first trees that were removed. That section is near completion and the trees have been transplanted, but the parakeets relocated. A date palm in front of our building has been taken over by a community nest. The cats have been binge-watching from the terrace.

  1. Happy New Year to you and SG. The cats ought to be happy with their new entertainment, Birds Birds Birds.

    1. Debra:
They love the show. But if one of those noisy, big parakeets showed up on the terrace, our cats would be hiding under the bed.

  2. I can see Moose trying to calculate how to get a bridge from the terrace to the tree. If cats could – they would. Maybe hot air balloons, or a little helicopter. A drone, you could buy a heavy lift drone and fly him over for a “visit.”

    1. David:
You’re right about Moose… and the cats in general. Although fat chance of getting either of then near any of those contraptions.

  3. A good end to 2023 with cat punim and The Boys binge-watching the birdies!
Happy New Year, Mitchell, to you and SG and Dudo and Moose!

  4. “Binge watching.” Hahahaha! I love it. Cat TV at its finest. Even though my cats are indoor/outdoor cats who come and go as they please, they do love to lie about on the back porch and watch the goings-on in the yard. When they can stay awake.
That salad looks so good. You give me ideas for my own menus. Thank you.

    1. Ms. Moon:
The salad is so incredibly good. Dudo and Moose have so much to see and watch from up here. And yet they still expect us to entertain them.

    1. Steve:
The monk parakeets are adorable and, yes, very squawky. The noise hasn’t been noticeable in the house for us. WIth the glass curtain closed, we can’t hear a thing.

  5. The parakeets fascinate me to see since they don’t fly about here naturally.

And Moose’s expression will most likely reflect m y mood tomorrow by this time.

A Happy New Year to you both!!!!!🍾🎆🎇🎊✨🍸🎉

    1. Mistress Borghese:
Unfortunately, the monk parakeets are freeloaders here, too. Native to Argentina, they’re classified here as invasive. Still, when not displacing native species, they’re pretty cute. Hope you’ve had a great time or, maybe, since it’s only 5:30 a.m. there, you’re still having a good time.

  6. I bet Dudo and Moose don’t want to do anything except eat and watch BirdTV. Oh, the joy of being a cat. Happy New Year!

    Love,
    Janie

    1. janiejunebug:
Dudo and Moose also expect us to be always available. Yes, the joy of being a cat. Wishing you a happy 2024.

  7. A new day, a new ear worm! I always liked Al Stewart. That salad looks fantastic! All the ingredients are available here; I should try to reproduce it!

    1. Walt the Fourth:
So have I! Can’t get the song out of my head. I think you would love the salad. It was filled with walnuts, raisins, and bits of bacon.
