It’s 10:27 and I just returned from the hospital where I had my bi-monthly, more or less, lab work done. I had planned to be there at 8. I got off to a slow start and arrived there at 9:30. So, I just finally took my first pill of the day and have to wait an hour before I can eat breakfast.
To distract us (me), here are sculptures from the Museum of Fine Arts. Some are busts, but others are just heads, especially the last one of Saint John the Baptist. I wanted to call this post “Heads or Tails,” but I had no photos of tails, except for the cats. So, I decided to share a photo of the feet under one of the smaller pasos of Semana Santa.
The painters are supposed to be back this afternoon to finish the leak repairs on the roof. I’ve done a lot of waiting around for this repair and will be happy when it’s done.
I plan to go to an art supply shop this afternoon to get some good paper for a drawing I’ve decided to begin. I’d better check my other supplies before I go. Stay tuned.
The sun is shining, it’s 22˚C/72˚F and expected to reach the high 20sC/mid-80sF. The flowers in the city are showing their gratitude..

“Heads and shoulders, knees and toes!”
How the hell do the bearers see where they are going? Imagine if just one of them tripped and they dropped the Jeebus – that would take some resurrection! Jx
Jon:
They practice A LOT. And the minute something goes wrong, they stop. Also, there are people walking alongside and giving them cues. It’s pretty amazing.
Tits and Ass!!!
It’s a gas, just a dash of silicone
Shake your new maracas and you’re fine
Tits and ass can change your life
They sure changed mine
Thank you, Miss Audrey Landers! Jx
Mistress Borghese:
Gee, thanks, Mads! Now I’ll be singing that in my head for the next two days.
I hate to think what that things weighs.
David:
The largest ones can weigh over a ton.
Love all the heads. I was an artist’s model for a few years and one class did clay heads. It was interesting that when each was done they looked more like the artist than me!
sillygirl:
I miss figure drawing class. Would have loved it with clay.
Now THAT is lot of busts!!
Must be more quiet around town now that Easter has passed.
I trying to remember the next Catholic Holy Day……..been a while…….maybe August 15th, the Assumption of the Virgin Mary. Bless you.
Jim:
Yes, it’s calmed down quite a bit. May is around the corner with Córdoba’s famous Festival of Patios from the 5th to the 18th. I will be sure to share a ton of photos. It’s supposed to be breathtaking. Everyone is already talking about it.
Oh, that photo of the feet! I bet it’s hot and smelly under those blackout drapes too. Glad you’re doing some art again!
Debra:
I would think it would have to be. But when one of the burly, sweaty costaleros passed a bit too close to me after coming out from underneath, he actually smelled good (and I do NOT like stinky and sweaty). Some miracle deodorant?
Being part of the crew that carries those things around sounds miserable to me. I imagine that’s a young man’s job. I would hope so anyway.
Yes! Draw! I want to see your art! Some of those heads/busts are really pretty amazing.
Moon Sigh
Ms. Moonsign:
Going to museums can be an inspiration for me, but it can also be a hindrance (i.e., Who do you think you are? The costaleros are all a hell of a lot younger than me (but, lately, everyone seems to be). It’s an honor to participate, apparently, and many people get turned down because they have so many volunteers. Our waiter-friend in Fuengirola does it almost every year.
I know. I feel the same about some authors. Why should I bother? They have done it all and done it better but the thing is, you do it because you love it. Theoretically. Like being a costalero, I guess.
Oh, yes.
The bearers. There’d be no Semana Santa without them but that would never be a problem, there’s always volunteers, right? It’s a penitence, though…
Love the busts. I’d love to have one in my house…
XOXO
Sixpence Notthewiser:
We knew someone in Fuengirola who volunteered every year and they were always turning people away. In our first year together we saw a stunning marble bust in an antique shop near our house in Boston. We came so close to buying it. At the time (1981), it was $350, and for once in our lives we decided to be practical. We have always regretted that.
I’m happy to hear you want to make some art again, Scoot! No pressure, but you know we all want to see it when you’re finished… and Moose is always ready for his close up, LOL!
Tundra Bunny:
I didn’t make it to the art supply shop today, but I did get things out to see what I need. More than I thought!
Thanks for making me smile and chuckle, Mitchell 🙂
I’m looking forward to seeing the drawing you’re going to do!
Judy C:
I’m looking forward to it, too!
It never ceases to amaze me and how beautiful and intricate these paseos are. And that there’s 32 men carrying that?
Mistress Borghese:
There was one in Seville that was so large and heavy it required 60 men to carry it. That one weighed a bit over a ton.
I’m sure it’s not, but the bust in the lower left corner (two across John the Baptist) looks like Marlon Brando!
Kirk:
You know, you’re right! His name is Juan Vallera and he was a writer, diplomat, and politician.
John the Baptist would have been easy to pick out of that bunch. 😄
I always get confused. Is bi-monthly twice a month or every two months?
Kelly:
There’s a reason to be confused. Bi-monthly always means twice a month. Semi-monthly can mean either every two months or twice a month. Clear as mud! I meant every 2 months. Sorry!
Bout sez the top left bust looks like alec Guinness.
I’m glad you’re getting into making art, always a great sign.
Boud:
I love how you’re playing with your name, Bout! I need you here to inspire and encourage me.
good for you about getting papers for drawing !
Urspo:
Now I just need to begin.
