Restoration, sugar, chalk, candy apples / Restoración, azúcar, tiza, manzanas acarameladas

After finally getting a close-up view of the Triumph of San Rafael near the mezquita (click here), I learned why the site had been re-opened to the public. A final look was offered before 23 tons of scaffolding, 27 meters (89 feet) tall surrounded it. The scaffolding is in itself a marvel, built to circle the tower and never touch it. There were a couple of comments on my recent post about the state of disrepair of 375-year-old San Rafael and his 18th-century monument.

I went up the stairs to the roof of the Roman gate to get a better view. While I was in the area, I thought it would be fun to also get a view of the mezquita/cathedral and the surrounding area from the parapet on the roof of the information and reception center, housed in part of the Bishop’s Palace across the street. I was stopped from entering because I hadn’t bought a ticket for the cathedral. It’s the second time I’ve been stopped from entering something not in the mezquita/cathedral because I hadn’t purchased my €18 ticket.

There are more than 10 churches in the city (known as the Fernandine churches) that were built in the 12th-century on the orders of San Geraldo’s 22-greats grandfather Ferdinand III. This past year, they began to require a ticket for the cathedral to enter any of those churches. I was a bit indignant (in my head) about that. I’ve paid to visit the mezquita (and cathedral) at least four times now. But maybe one of these days, I’ll pay for another ticket and make a point of visiting all the churches on the list (14 are listed while I think only 12 are actually Fernandine) and the bishop’s palace. There’s also a 10th-century elephant fountain in the courtyard of the bishop’s palace I would like to see.

I’ve been drinking those protein shakes (click here) I picked up on sale at El Corte Inglés last week. The first, YoPro, was a brand I’d never tried before. The flavor was mango. If I had been offered a blind taste test, I would have told you it tasted like some kind of fruit, and chalk. But it settled well, so I’d have it again. The second was by Nutrisport, a brand I’m familiar with. The only flavor they had was vanilla and it was weak. It also settled well, so I’d buy it again. I enjoy protein bars and energy bars that others describe as tasting like imitation chocolate and artificial flavors wrapped around cardboard. So, don’t trust my reviews.

  1. Mango protein drink with a cute muscle boy on the bottle… sure Jan. : )

But then again, we are at that age where it’s a recommended necessity.

    The drink, that is.

It looks like a nice time out!

    1. Rade:
I started supplementing with protein drinks when I was in my 20s to try to build up. No recommendation from my doc now (he doesn’t think they’re necessary), but I find they make a difference.

  2. That is rather spectacular scaffolding. Do they offer an annual membership for the churches? Those bottles with the unremovable tops.

    1. David Godfrey:
No annual memberships, but Judy C noticed different pricing online than I knew about. It might be free for me! I forget you don’t have bottle tops like that. They have truly saved so much litter.

  3. I wonder how different the Triumph of San Rafael will look once the scaffolding comes down.
I have never liked candied apples but I know I would thoroughly enjoy candied José!

    1. Bob:
I wonder how long the cleaning and repairs will take. It should be amazing. I’ve never liked candied apples either, but yeah candied José is a different story.

  4. That scaffolding is a project in and of itself.
These pictures are great but I can’t help but truly admire the guy who’s using that small niche as a place to prop his butt for a sort of seat. Strong quads required. He must get a lot of protein, I am thinking.

    1. Mary Moon:
Oh, I’m so happy you noticed how that guy was sitting. I was impressed. He sat there for a long time. He must have had a bubble butt. A bony butt would never last.

    1. ellen abbott:
Historical costumes for something going on around there. I should have asked. They were just hanging out on a break.

  5. José and a protein drink. Now, there’s the stuff of dreams..! 😜

That whole ticketing business sounds like a bit of a money-spinner to me. Jx

    1. Jon:
I agree about the ticket packages. To me, a bit of a rip-off and an inconvenience. I learned about it when I tried to enter a church 3 minutes from the cathedral and was told I’d have to first to go to the cathedral and buy a ticket. (Although I assume I could do it online.)

  6. Mitch, in the photo of the Nutrisport Sabor vainilla drink, what is the red-framed artwork on the wall, that we can see just a touch of? And, if I may ask :), what do you keep in that beautiful urn behind the drink?

About paying to get into the Catedral… maybe I’m looking at the wrong building… but, isn’t there free admittance for those who are residents of the Córdoba diocese? Would that be you? (and, if not, at least a reduced fee for those over 65): Entradas y horarios, Catedral de Córdoba

    1. Judy C:
Thanks for the info about the cathedral. I will check that out. The last I looked there were no special deals for residents (I assume resident of the diocese applies to me) and the price for seniors was €18. THAT would be wonderful. The glass “urn” is an old piece of glass SG got in Seattle. I think it was a gift. As for the painting on the wall, it’s by Chuck: https://movingwithmitchell.com/2012/01/20/better-days-and-going-dis-way/

  7. The guys in what look like modern gear for stone workers or reenactment gear or some kind? Amazing to be exploring all those SG related historic sites. Shouldn’t there be a relative’s discount for the buildings? Boud

    1. Boud:
Those guys were in costume for something around there. I don’t know what. They were on a break and hanging out near the Roman gate.

  8. Since the body needs lots of protein to heal wounds and I had that molar extracted 2 weeks ago, I’ve been pounding back 2 bottles per day of high protein Boost for diabetics. It has 16 g of protein and the chocolate flavour is pretty good. Ordinarily I don’t bother with supplementary drinks like that, just because they cost an arm and a leg, in my opinion, but right now it’s for a good cause. My sister tells me I’m cheap but I assure you that I am simply thrifty, that’s all.

    1. Debra:
I haven’t seen Boost here. But, yeah, they are SO expensive. I need to buy a big container of whey protein and start making my own again (although they don’t end up being much cheaper).

  9. We have recently just got back into the consumptionn of protein smoothies. We make them ourselves and do they EVER do the trick of quenching that protein craving.
We find it a task to find a protein bar that is not too sweet.
That scaffolding is a piece of art in itself.

    1. Jim:
Yes, the protein drinks make a huge difference for me, too. I plan to buy some whey protein and go back to making them myself.

  10. My wife found some Fairlife chocolate shakes that are rich in protein and they taste… Pretty good and not awful.

It is a shame that protein can’t be easily and effectively be formed into a pill. Most protein supplements are so bad in the taste department
