Just Desserts

We are oh-so-close to our move to the beach. Less than two weeks to go. Meanwhile, in our current apartment, idiot building manager “F” is showing an interest in the repair issues. Sudden professional and moral responsibility? Don’t bet on it. It’s simply panic. A soon-to-be empty, uninhabitable, and not inexpensive apartment on his hands — in a very tough market. Although the situation still gives me angst at moments, it has really become comical. Of course, we are not going to allow repair people access as we get ready to move. There are no more leaks. We waited weeks for nothing. Now, F can wait until we leave. It’s very satisfying to serve him his just desserts. And that’s all I’ll say on the subject today.


To get the bad taste of selfishness and incompetence out of my mouth, I’m thinking of some of the delicious and beautiful desserts we’ve had recently. The first two desserts were served at our favorite Mexican restaurant. The sauces were artistically presented and delicious.


While out shopping one day, we couldn’t resist some pastries we saw in the window of a bakery near El Corte Inglés. Then, after an as-always incredible dinner at Catalina, came a lemon tarta dessert. It reminded us of Jerry’s mother’s lemon bread. Anything that reminds us of Alice is heavenly.


More Sweetness On Its Way

Tonight, we head back to Catalina — our favorite place — for our “see-you-again-soon” dinner with Adela, Paula, and Vanessa. It’s very satisfying to note that our “just desserts” are so much sweeter than “F’s”!

    There will be much that you will miss when you move, particularly the friends you have made and, of course, some of these rather delicious puddings.

    Do the cats sense a move is in the air, we wonder?

  2. Oh, what lovely desserts! Bet they tasted as good as they looked. So NOW you have F's attention, huh? Going on two months waiting, while your once beautiful apartment grows moldy and hilly. Bet you are really looking forward to your new home. Best wishes on a smooth move.

  3. Nothing better to get that 'bad taste' out of one's mouth than something decadently sweet!! And these would certainly do the trick for me, Mitch! That pastry looks like rolled pound cake…..yum!!
    Two weeks…..you both must be excited!

  4. I'm glad F is getting his just desserts…and I can understand your angst as well. Moving is such an upheaval but I guess you have it down to a fine art by now.

    But…Oh my! those pictures! So tantalising…I don't think I've eaten a dessert (other than plain fruit) for about three years. But I still enjoy looking! I particularly like the look of that rolled pastry thingy…I can just imagine what it feels like when you bite into it. Phew!

      The move itself doesn't give me angst (like you said, we've got it down to a fine art). The issues with "F" give me angst. But they'll soon be over. The rolled pastry is fairly crispy but melts in your mouth. I'll find a recipe just so you can get a better sense of it.

  5. The puddings all look great, but the one which makes me want to eat it is the Lemon Bread, it is making my mouth water and my tummy rumble.

    I hate tying up loose ends and having to pack – but oh, how I love new beginnings and exploring a new place (just as well, we've done it often enough). I'm sure great fun and wonderful adventures await you. Love to the boys.

      The lemon tarta was excellent. We've got so many moves under our belts that we actually look forward to the new place. This is the easiest move yet as we got rid of so much "stuff" before coming to Spain. And we're not packing ourselves, which makes it even easier. Poor Dudo and Moose don't know what's coming!

  6. Thank you, thank you very much indeed. My saddlemaker's apprentice-measurer tells me I've gone up two sizes since just reading this puddin' fest, and may have to go both side-saddle and Percheron before long. Thank you very much indeed.

      Mexican and Spanish cuisine are entirely different. Even things with the same names (like tortillas) share absolutely no similarities. It's not easy to find a traditional Mexican restaurant in this area.

  7. A treat for the eyes my favourite is the apricot art with the carrot cake. I am sure there are many fabulous things about Seville which you will miss but so much excitement and anticipation about where you are moving to so enjoy the good memories and the bad ones 'F' included throw in the mental bin.

      Apparently the apricot art was good, the carrot cake was only so-so. It IS difficult to leave Sevilla, but I love change and look forward to the very different life we're about to begin. So happy we'll still be in Spain!

  8. These desserts look wonderful, and I can't eat anything remotely like them….(But I can make a wonderful roll cake with vanilla whey powder and ground almonds!) May your move go very well and with no unpleasantness from the terrible "F". (But I'm sure you can be very formidable when you need to!)

      Ooooh, that roll cake sounds delicious! Yep, I can be formidable (and I think I just was again yesterday), but I don't enjoy it and have hours of guilt and angst every time. So I'm looking forward to putting "F" behind us.
