The bricks, the stripper, the Bengal / Los ladrillos, el stripper, el bengalí

The house at Calle Maese Luis 4 was built in the 1970s. I thought it was a former church when I saw it from the front. The architecture is an interesting combination of traditional and contemporary and the courtyard, for obvious reasons, is nicknamed the Brick Courtyard. Once again, the paving is hand-laid stones in an extravagant pattern impossible to see for all the flowers on display for the Patios of May. The owner is José Cruz, a nativity scene artist who has one of his works on a wall protected from the weather. The patio was cheerful and, as you can see, didn’t take much time to explore.

RENFE stands for Red Nacional de los Ferrocarriles Españoles (Spanish National Railway Network). If you’re confused, “red” means network (or grid, web, net, netting). It was the state-owned company that operated the railway network beginning in 1941, a monopoly until 2005 when it was divided into two entities, Adif (which manages the Spanish railway infrastructure) and Renfe-Operadora, the company that took over the publicly owned railways. It’s not important that you know this, but it brings me to today’s video.

About a year ago, Nick and Alyson, in Colchester, England, took in a Bengal kitten and named him Renfe. Bengals are known for their intelligence and high energy. When we chat, Renfe is all over the room getting into trouble non-stop. When Nick and Alyson’s son Edward was still at home, Renfe would let himself into Edward’s room, find his wallet, and empty it. He liked the paper money the best. When they’re at work, Renfe and his sister cat, Mindy, not a Bengal and much better behaved, are relegated to the large kitchen where they can’t do too much damage.

Nick has security cameras everywhere in the house. Some, like one in the kitchen, have privacy covers that slide over the lens. I have no idea what they could be doing in the kitchen that would require privacy. Oh, wait!

Some years ago, Alyson and Edward had just arrived in Sri Lanka with Alyson’s parents. She decided to check in with Nick. Rather than call, she simply connected to their security system and found him in the kitchen. He was doing laundry and had just stripped off all his clothes to throw everything in the machine. He heard voices cheerily chirp, “Hi, Nick!” And then there were gasps.

Renfe must have heard that story. He’s figured out how to slide the privacy cover closed — and open and closed and open and closed. And every time Renfe slides it open or closed, Nick receives an audible notification on his mobile.

La casa en Calle Maese Luis 4 fue construida en la década de 1970. Pensé que era una antigua iglesia cuando la vi de frente. La arquitectura es una interesante combinación de lo tradicional y lo contemporáneo, y el patio, por razones obvias, se llama el Patio de Ladrillo. Una vez más, el pavimento es de piedras colocadas a mano en un patrón extravagante, imposible de apreciar por todas las flores expuestas para los Patios de Mayo. El propietario es José Cruz, un artista de belenes que tiene una de sus obras en una pared protegida de la intemperie. El patio era alegre y, como pueden ver, no me llevó mucho tiempo explorarla.

RENFE son las siglas de Red Nacional de los Ferrocarriles Españoles. Si no lo entienden, “red” significa red (o cuadrícula, red, entramado). Fue la empresa estatal la que operó la red ferroviaria desde 1941, un monopolio hasta 2005, cuando se dividió en dos entidades: Adif (que gestiona la infraestructura ferroviaria española) y Renfe-Operadora, la empresa que se hizo cargo de los ferrocarriles de propiedad pública. No es importante que lo sepan, pero me lleva al vídeo de hoy.

Hace aproximadamente un año, Nick y Alyson, en Colchester, Inglaterra, adoptaron un gatito bengalí al que llamaron Renfe. Los bengalíes son conocidos por su inteligencia y energía. Cuando hablamos, Renfe corretea por todo el salon metiéndose en líos sin parar. Cuando Edward, el hijo de Nick y Alyson, aún vivía en casa, Renfe se colaba en su habitación, encontraba su cartera y la vaciaba. Lo que más le gustaba era el dinero en efectivo. Cuando están en el trabajo, Renfe y su hermana Mindy, que no es bengalí y se porta mucho mejor, se quedan en la cocina grande, donde no pueden causar demasiados destrozos.

Nick tiene cámaras de seguridad por toda la casa. Algunas, como una de la cocina, tienen cubiertas que se deslizan sobre la lente. No tengo ni idea de qué podrían estar haciendo en la cocina que requiera privacidad. ¡Ah, espera!

Hace algunos años, Alyson y Edward acababan de llegar a Sri Lanka con los padres de Alyson. Ella decidió visitar a Nick. En lugar de llamarlo, simplemente se conectó al sistema de seguridad y lo encontró en la cocina. Estaba lavando la ropa y acababa de quitársela para meterla en la lavadora. Escuchó voces que decían alegremente: «¡Hola, Nick!» Y entonces se oyeron exclamaciones de sorpresa.

Renfe debió haber oído esa historia. Ha descubierto cómo deslizar la tapa de privacidad para cerrarla, abrirla y cerrarla y abrirla y cerrarla. Y cada vez que Renfe lo abre o lo cierra, Nick recibe una notificación sonora en su teléfono móvil.
