LAST WEEK WE SPOKE WITH our friends Nick and Alyson, and their son Edward, who are usually here from England several times a year. Sadly, we haven’t seen them since February but all are well and we had a great online visit.
We got on the subject of San Geraldo’s cooking and baking, and even store-bought deserts. Specifically Häagen-Dazs ice cream. I love all the chocolate flavours, but if I eat them after dinner instead of after lunch, I tend to have unpleasant dreams and unsettled sleep. I had taken to having Dulce de Leche. However, Alyson reminded me of Salted Caramel, so San Geraldo bought me a container, while he enjoyed his Belgian Chocolate. It was as good as I remembered.
I have a thing for textures and love an added crunch when you normally wouldn’t expect it, which is why if I see pine nuts listed on a restaurant menu, that’s usually the dish I’ll order. Häagen-Dazs Salted Caramel has little crunchy bits that add to the pleasure, but I still miss my chocolate. So, SG mentioned that the market also had Chocolate Salted Caramel. I decided to risk a bad night’s sleep for a few moments of chocolate delight. It was worth it. And I didn’t even lose any sleep.
On the healthier side (in my mind), I added a slathering of peanut butter to my slice of chocolate banana bread the other morning. Who’s the saint? And don’t let the cherubic faces below fool you. It is neither Dudo nor Moose.

Me he acostumbrado a tener Dulce de Leche.

I don’t get the chocolate. I am not so much a fan, though Carlos is enough of one for the both of us.
And those boys ARE angels!
Bob:
I only like chocolate because it’s good for my mental health… and it’s a fruit. Even if the boys aren’t always angelic, they ARE sweet. They’re both out on the terrace sleeping in the sun.
Yum. Salted caramel. One of the world’s great flavors.
My DH’s favorite is Talenti brand gelato called a Salted Caramel Truffle Layers. Description: sea salt caramel gelato surrounded by layers of chocolate cookie crumbs, vanilla gelato, dulce de leche, and chocolate coated caramel truffles. It would probably be mine, too, but I can’t handle the calories. Or perhaps you might also like their Peanut Butter Vanilla Fudge. Layers include: peanut butter gelato, peanut butter cups, fudge sauce, vanilla gelato, peanut butter cookies.
Mary:
I’ve never heard of Talenti. But oh my mouth is watering. Wish we could find it here. Of course, we’ve got gourmet artisan ice cream shops nearby. I should just explore some more. I love peanut butter but have never been a fan of peanut butter ice cream or shakes. The salted caramel truffle layers, though, sound amazing.
Sounds and looks SO good! It would be too tempting if we had it in the house. Hubby can’t digest it/dairy very well at all. Not worth the risk. But……nice it didn’t affect your sleep though.
The cats look so docile here. I am imagining them going at it however. Which one is usually the aggressor?
Jim:
They are BOTH the aggressors. And they act so pathetic when one gets the upper paw over the other and we give a shout to rescue them. Moose would tell you Dudo is moody. Dudo would tell you Moose is a pain in the ass.
I LOVE salted caramel! Salted caramel ANYTHING. Even ice cream, which isn’t my favorite dessert by a long shot. 🙂
Jennifer:
I don’t think I’ve ever had salted caramel — without the ice cream. I’m sure I would love it.
ummmmmmmmmmm, ice cream…
moose & dudo ARE good boys!
I like super crunchy peanut butter; you DO know how to schmear!
anne marie:
Wasn’t that an artistic schmear? And I, too, love super crunchy peanut butter. I hated it and textures in foods (and was a very picky eater) when I was a kid. Complete turnaround as an adult.
Ice cream is one of the worst thing to eat before bed…..gives everyone dreams it seems…but I do love me some ice cream. Not a huge Caramel fan though.
Mistress Maddie:
It’s the chocolate that does it to me at night. I LOVE caramel. In SG’s world, it’s called CAR-muhl.
Bananas do it to me. Freudian? 😀
Deedles:
Do bananas give you bad dreams or just keep you awake?
Looks delightful. Who has the stronger impulse control, you with ice cream or the cats?
David:
No contest. I win — if you’re talking about the cats beating up on each other. They have no interest in ice cream.
Despite my love for all things chocolate, I don’t like chocolate ice cream. Haagen-Dazs does make a wonderful vanilla though. They used to have Cherry Vanilla, which I loved, but I haven’t seen it in years.
Carole:
I used to love their cherry vanilla. But there’s always Ben & Jerry’s Cherry Garcia.
Ok I think you should have a pickle with the banana bread and peanut butter. My younger brother would.
Laurent:
Oh, that sounds awful. However, salami and peanut butter is surprisingly good.
Salted caramel ice cream is the best! I would love some right now, although I would have to be nestled under a blanket to eat it. We are having cool, rainy weather – it is 67F and raining steadily. I made a lentil casserole today just to get the kitchen warm. Too bad chocolate disagrees with you at night because it is a great finish to the day.
Wilma:
Ah… thank you! Someone else who describes 67F as “cool.” It’s a frigid 58F here right now. No rain, however, which I would enjoy. Sadly, because I can’t finish my day with chocolate, I’m “forced” to start it with chocolate and continue through the afternoon.
You know, it has never occurred to me to put peanut butter on a slice of banana bread. I must try this new culinary delicacy the next time I make banana bread!!!
Debra:
I remember peanut butter and banana sandwiches being surprisingly good, so I figured why not. It turns out it’s excellent… and then with the addition of chocolate chips and chunks in the banana bread… I need more.
Caramel’s OK, but I love chocolate and Ice cream, so it sounds delectable. Not sure I get the salted part, though. When I hear caramel, I think caramel candy, and that, I don’t think, is salted.
Kirk:
It’s not overly salted and it’s surprisingly good in my opinion. I’ve had chocolate with sea salt, however, and hated it.
Never mind the Haagen-Dazs, I want some Dudo-Moose!
Raybeard:
They ARE delicious.
That is my favourite ice cream! Since I discovered it several years ago I haven’t bought any others…There are 2 tubs in the freezer !!
Frances:
SO good. We have none in the freezer. I’m jealous.
“I have a thing for textures and love an added crunch when you normally wouldn’t expect it.” Ah! Just like your men! 😆
wickedhamster:
It’s a succinct description of SG.
😁😆😂
Those crazy cats are up to no good that’s certain.
Count the knives
Urspo:
No opposable thumbs. We’re safe.
I LOVE peanut butter on banana bread. Yum! And I like Haagen-Dasz too, but I find that when we buy it here, it’s always so rock-hard that it’s virtually impossible to serve. Same with Ben & Jerry’s. Even if I briefly nuke it, it’s a nightmare and I often wind up inflicting grave damage on the container while scooping it out!
Steve:
So strange about the ice cream. Do you have other good options that don’t end up like that?
It’s interesting — I thought you might know what I was talking about. So maybe it really IS a problem just with our local ice cream suppliers! I suspect it melts a little bit in shipping and then gets refrozen in the store, but that’s just a guess. There are other brands that don’t have a tendency to get so hard, but they’re not nearly as good.
Between the ice cream and the kitty pix, I’m now going have to up my insulin dosage! Thanks a lot, Scoot!
Deedles:
Um… You’re welcome?
