Lit, balanced, under control / Iluminado, equilibrado, controlado

La versión en español está después de la versión en inglés.

Let’s go back to Málaga, but only in pictures. Any day spent with Alyson and Nick is worth revisiting. Besides, I took a lot of pictures, and of some things new to me even after all these years.

Although we only visited the gift shop of the OXO Museum, Nick and Alyson had already visited the museum itself. It’s “an interactive museum dedicated to the history and culture of video games, showcasing the past, present, and future of digital entertainment.” The museum opened in early 2023, but I never knew about it. It’s named for the game Naughts and Crosses which was created in 1952.

The gift shop was fun. Like Alyson, I don’t… Oh, wait. That sounds like the gift shop was fun like Alyson. Alyson is more fun than the gift shop. But, like Alyson, I don’t have much interest, having never been a gamer. Nick, on the other hand, would be happy to live there. He bought a few things. Excitedlly, he showed me a coffee mug. I had no idea what the gaming image even was. He whispered, “Alyson is going to say, ‘Do we need another coffee mug´?” He held up the mug for Alyson to see, “Do we need another coffee mug?” she asked. Apparently, they did.

I SAW THE nephrologist yesterday evening and was stunned to receive great news. He said my most recent lab work was good and he considers my kidney disease under control. Not in remission, but at least under control. He suspended one of my medications which means I’m now down from a high of 16 pills a day to only 10 pills (not counting the ones I take “as needed”). We went out and celebrated last night at Goiko Grill, because they make us feel like family. We were going to call Shannon and Stacy but remembered that they had Spanish class.

We are currently out for coffee and second breakfast while Merchi works her magic.

NOTE:
I probably should have led with the health update.

• After crossing back from the port. Port Authorities Building in background (and in photo at top).
• Tras cruzar de regreso desde el puerto. Edificio de las Autoridades Portuarias al fondo (y en la foto superior).
• María Zambrano Station. I stopped to snap this before running to the right to meet Nick and Alyson at the commuter train hall. Apparently, they were standing to my left watching the doors for my arrival. Oops!
• Estación María Zambrano. Me detuve a tomar esta foto antes de correr a la derecha para encontrarme con Nick y Alyson en el vestíbulo del tren de cercanías. Al parecer, estaban a mi izquierda esperando mi llegada. ¡Uy!
• Calle Larios before it got lit.
• Calle Larios antes de ser iluminada.
• The balance.
• El equilibrio.

  1. Good news on your health! This story reminds me of the greatest mug I ever got! From You!! Only the C broke off so now it’s just….See You Tuesday… Oh well.

    1. Kathleen:
So, you now have a mug commemorating a European mole OR the University of North Texas.

  2. My first smile of the morning, great news, wonderful friends, and a memorable place. I don’t know why, but I like the pig on the balance beam.

    1. David:
I love those figures! My kind of art. I used sculpt small versions (well, with human heads). Would love to again.

  3. That photo with the “high-wire” artists, or whatever you call them is sure unique! I am so happy that you got a good report from the nephrologist!

  4. Happy to hear your kidney news! A few years ago when I was visiting Quebec City, I saw a museum exhibit about the history of video games. My reaction was like yours. Just not part of my world.

    1. Debra She Who Seeks:
I played PacMan when it first appeared in bars (and then not much). That’s the extent of my experience. I had no idea what I was even looking at.

  5. In our case, I am Nick and Carlos is Alyson; I have heard the “Do we really need another coffee mug” more times than I can recall.

Great health news!! Bravo, sir. I imagine you really felt like celebrating after that news!

    1. Bob:
We now only have 6 special coffee mugs, plus the matched set of 12 that we bought with our tableware. In the past, we both felt we always needed more. We left a collection behind in the States.

  6. Yes, the health news was the leading story! This is great, and I’m happy for you.
About video games, hm, I’m in the why? camp on them. Except for the little one in my online advent calendar, but that’s the nursery slopes of gaming. Boud

    1. Boud:
My brother had ever iteration and knew them well. He hasn’t kept up. I played on here or there, but I was a bit older than the curve to get hooked.

  7. Are those yellow lights outlining the Port Authorities Building neon? And I love the Balance. Very clever little piece. Also, good news healthwise. Always good when they decrease the meds.

    1. ellen abbott:
The lights definitely aren’t neon, although I don’t know how they’re assembled. Maybe through tubing.

      1. Mistress Borghese:
This is the first time we would toast with the same non-alcoholic beverages!

    1. Mistress Borghese:
Mine, too. There was a street in Brooklyn that was famous for its over-the-top decorations. I would always drive over to see it with friends. But, NYC at Christmas. Rockefeller Center. Saks Fifth Avenue. Heaven!

  8. Happy to hear the about the kidney disease calming down. Less pills to take is certainly good news.

On the funny side, my British upbringing led me to think that when you spoke of the OXO Museum, I thought you were referring to either a display of OXO kitchen wear items or OXO cooking cubes–samples of either kind do reside in my kitchen. Never thought of video games, but then again, I don’t play any. Just shows you how our different reference points lead us to various assumptions. 🙂 Mary

    1. Mary:
I had to read what OXO stood for. I thought the same as you. It’s named after kitchen utensils?!?

  9. Hooray on the health news! It’s a great way to (almost) end the year. My son and DIL would love that museum and gift shop.

  10. I am SO happy to hear the health news. Keep it up! I absolutely love the balancing art. What whimsical fun that is.
    Ms. Moon

    1. Ms. Moon:
Just having this news makes me feel so much healthier! I love the art and visit it every time I’m in Málaga.

    1. Olivia:
I love that art. Would love to create things like that. I used to do small versions in clay.

  11. Yay!
    Glad you got good news!
And I see the whole world has gotten the message of xmas…

    XOXO

  12. Great health news! Woo hoo!

I would not have pegged OXO as a video game museum. I always associate the name OXO with beef bouillon cubes, but now that you mention it, maybe that name comes from Noughts and Crosses as well. (The original paper-and-pencil game, not the computer version!)
