Size doesn’t matter / El tamaño no importa

La versión en español está después de la versión en inglés.

My blog has been on WordPress for a number of years as a result of some difficult times with Google Blogspot that needed resolution and resulted in months of no response from Google (I got what I paid for). Many people, no matter their loyalties, still have their blog reading notifications via Google Blogspot. Service is not always consistent, but lately it’s been extremely frustrating. Some posts don’t appear on my list until one or more days after posting. Then there’s the problem of commenting. And this is a current problem with both Blogger and WordPress. I have at times gone from Google Chrome to Safari to successfully publish a comment on some blogs. Today, I could only publish comments from Safari. Cookie settings, I think. Safari asks and enables me to override my settings when I comment and Chrome does not. One day, after being unsuccessful commenting on Chrome on a particular blog, I switched to Safari and it still took three tries before my comment posted. Other times, I think I’ve successfully shared my comment only to find the next day that it never appeared. In other words, I’m trying! I’m sure you are, too.

Maureen and Connor (our Glaswegian chosen family) will be here for a visit in a few days. They sent us a very special gift as a tribute to Dudo and Moose. It was delivered the other day and we were delighted when we opened the box. I immediately sent them a photo and Maureen was not delighted. She thought she was purchasing two vase-sized milk glass pitchers (without spouts) that would be perfect as vases. They are more the size of coffee cups. The photo above is what Maureen saw on the web. I’m guessing those are tea roses. We’re sorry Maureen is disappointed but we’re not. They’re charming.

Connor thought it was pretty funny. He reminded us that some years ago, Maureen fell in love with a pair of chairs online and ordered them for her living room. They turned out to be refrigerator magnets. I don’t know if they were unusually cheap chairs or surprisingly expensive refrigerator magnets.

Yesterday, I bought a sleeveless workout shirt at Zara. I tried it on at home and it was so tight I could barely get it on. It was so small that I checked the size to see if I had purchased a small instead of a large. I had not. No wonder it was on sale. So it’s back to Zara today. I know this is not the same as buying a vase and getting a coffee mug, or ordering an area rug for the living room and receiving one for a dollhouse. Have you ever had that kind of online experience?

  1. I love the Moose and Dudo mugs … sweet gift.

A few years ago I was watching an episode of Will & Grace and Karen–my spirit animal–was drinking coffee out of a cups that had small tables legs at the bottom so the cup stood off the counter. I mentioned to Carlos that I liked the mug with table legs and on my next birthday a box was at the breakfast table.
Carlos warned me that it was “different.” and I opened the box and there was a coffee cup with table legs AND a saucer; just like Karens.
Except this one was about an inch-and-a-half tall and was too small even for an espresso.
It holds a special place on a shelf in the kitchen and I smile every time I see it.

  2. I’m back from London! I read your blog, but didn’t post… too annoying from my phone.
I now always use Safari to read your blog, because that seems to be the only way to be able to comment with the option to use my Google account name. I have another friend who has a WordPress blog, and I can’t seem to comment on hers, no matter what browser I use.

So much heat everywhere! But, for us, we were incredibly fortunate, because our week in London was only in the 70s F… I think they’ve gone up again. Here in St Louis, it’s miserably humid and hot, but I am an AC lover, so I keep it cool in here 🙂

    1. Judy C:
You had perfect timing for London. It would be awful to try to cope with the heat there in general, but when sightseeing it would be awful.

  3. Commenting has become a PIA these days regardless of the platform. It is why I don’t bother to log in to comment. WordPress tells me that my password isn’t good even though I haven’t changed it and then dumps any comment, so I don’t bother with it anymore. Annoying, but more so for bloggers who put in the effort to post and then find they aren’t getting comments because people get frustrated with the process. Now I’m usually anonymous, but I do try to put my name at the end of the comment. Best I can do.

Love the (tiny) vases. I find that it helps to double check the measurements of anything I order online. If the online site doesn’t have actual specs somewhere in the description of an item, I will pass on it.
    Mary

    1. Mary:
And sometimes Anonymous doesn’t even work for me. So annoying. I learned to always double-check the measurements, too. And, like you, if I don’t find any, I don’t buy.

  4. What a thoughtful gift and I think the size is just right.

I ordered a pair of leggings on line once, ordered a medium. They came, tag said medium but they were so large they almost fell off. The vendor would not accept a return because I ordered a M and they sent a M.

    1. And I meant to say I have also noticed that Blogger notifications are very slow. I read several that post every day and if in the morning it still shows yesterday’s post I just click on the blog title on my sidebar.

      1. ellen abbott:
I’ve noticed that, too. I’ll be commenting on what is think is the most recent and then notice a link for “newer post.”

    2. ellen abbott:
Not knowing what Maureen had expected, we both were completely charmed by the cups.

Well, that’s a vendor you’ll never use again.

  5. Have you tried Firefox? That’s what I use and I very rarely have problems commenting, compared with what some other bloggers report. And uBlock Origin is a plus — not sure whether it works on other browsers.

    1. Infidel753:
I haven’t used Firefox in years. I just reinstalled it and will give it a try.

      1. I use Firefox with uBlock Origin ad-blocker, and both work fine. You do need to switch off the “cross site tracking” function (in FF that’s a shield far left of the url in the address field at the top of the page) so that the comments widget on either Blogger or WordPress will work, but the good thing is it seems you only need to do that once for each site you follow. In WP, allowing the cross-site tracking means that the little buttons under the comment box that take you to log-in options show up rather than that annoying “sign in with email”. Jx

        1. Jon:
Yeah, I might have to allow cross tracking again! I just reinstalled Firefox, too. Thanks,

  6. The little mugs are adorable! They made me kind of tear up. Yep, I can be kind of a sap at times. I once ordered a purse from Amazon. What I received was Ironman pajamas for a baby. I sent it back and reordered the purse. Once again I got very cute Ironman pajamas for a baby. I got a refund and gave up on the purse.

    1. Deedles:
SG and I were both saps for these, too.

An Ironman pajamas purse. How cool. However, you do know that in Spanish the word for Ironman Pajamas is “Purse.”

      1. Ha! Pull the other one, Scoot! Oh by the way, I loved the video. That’s what I miss most awith shopping online, no one busting out in dance and Broadway show tunes.

  7. I keep a list of the blogs I visit pinned in my “notes”. I can click on any I want to read from my phone or my laptop.

    1. Kelly:
I do have a list of the blogs I read, but that means I have to open every blog whether there’s a new post or not. And there are a lot of blogs. You’re more dedicated than I am!

      1. But the link for the video is the same as the previous link. I don’t want to miss something good!

        1. I buggered up the embed code for the link to my post about Pride 2007, dammit! Yes, we were all so much younger and thinner then…

The video I am referring to is the one you posted of that brilliant “flashmob” in the shopping centre. My attempt to make a joke, comparing it with our own local shopping experience, fell flat evidently. Jx

          1. Jon:
Sorry about that! I wish I could be witness to a flashmob!

          2. We were part of one once – sort of. At Pride a few years ago, when we were able to get on the march, and when access to the Trafalgar Square “after-party” concert was free and easier, there was a mass world record attempt for biggest flashmob, with hundreds of people in the Square all singing and dancing along in time to Bonnie Tyler’s Holding Out for a Hero. I have no idea whether the record was broken, but it was loads of fun! Jx

  8. The whole commenting thing is quite frustrating. I had to create a blogspot blog just so that I could comment on those blogs. And sometimes it doesn’t work.

What an incredibly thoughtful gift. I think the vases are adorable.

    1. Michael:
I don’t understand why commenting is so problematic — and inconsistent. We love the gift!

      1. As a Blogger/Blogspot user, I restrict my security level for comments to people who have Google/GMail/YouTube/Blogger log-ins (they’re all the same these days) to avoid spam. It doesn’t always work of course, but… Jx

  9. Moose & Dudo’s memorial mugs are adorable — just like them!

Apparently, Temu is notorious for sending miniature copies or crappy versions of the things customers order. YouTube is littered with videos from p.o.’d customers.

I’ve only had trouble commenting on a couple blogs — luckily, none of my favourites, LOL! I use Safari and Google, but my MacBook is 9 years old now and should be replaced. Maybe old operating systems and software pay off in unknown ways?

    1. Tundra Bunny:
I’m leery of ordering from Temu given the amount of legitimate problems reported. You’re so right about NOT updating. Every time there’s an update, there are new problems.

  10. The fact that you can identify and work around an issue with comments makes you a genius in my book. It took me an hour or more to purchase tickets on line for the Gay Men’s Chorus a couple of weeks ago. And I started with computers when they used punch cards! Hope you and Geraldo are keeping cool. Always nice photography on your blog. I don’t check in as often and I don’t post on mine as often. Old and tired.

    1. Frank D:
Doing everything online can be incredibly convenient and infuriatingly difficult.

  11. Every so often Blogger refuses to use my name or picture when commenting on my own blog! I have to turn the computer on and off a couple of times to get back to normal.

    1. Kirk:
That sounds familiar! (And I keep hitting reply to this comment and it keeps replying to a different comment!)

  12. The closest I can think of an online shopping experiences to that was ordering a Coca-Cola t-shirt from JCPenney and it coming in kind of pink rather than the classic red

    1. Adam:
Ordering colors online can be so unpredictable. But I’d expect a red Coca Cola T-shirt, not a pink one.

  13. I had to simply remove myself from my WordPress account that I made many years ago for some reason in order to be able to comment properly and with my name. No matter what else I did, I could not. I don’t seem to have much problem with blogger at all. Maybe I’m just so used to it. I use an app called Feedly to check and see which blogs I read that have updated. And that too works for me.
What a swell video! Why am I never anywhere when something like that happens?
You simply cannot trust sizes even at well-known stores. Especially women’s sizes which are simply ridiculously unregulated. A small in one brand can be a large in another and vice versa.

  14. I’m getting weird numbers lately — almost no views on the post itself, then hundreds of views in the stats. And very few comments, but perhaps people aren’t able to get them in.
My favorite weird online buy was pajamas, size small. The pants are lovely, been wearing them for years. But the t-shirt top was so big it wouldn’t stay on my body! Neckline wider than my shoulders! I free cycled it to some large person. Boud

    1. Boud,
How odd about the pajamas. SG once ordered sneakers to be delivered to my mothers when we were visiting. They sent two left feet!
