Allow me to begin by saying, I love San Geraldo. He’s smart, funny, handsome, fascinating, and interesting. He can also be an idiot. Don’t worry, I told him directly this morning. I was in my bathroom beautifying after my shower while San Geraldo took his shower in the other bathroom. I heard a thud and a frighteningly moaned “Mitchell!”
I ran naked from one end of the long apartment to the other and found him facing the floor with his feet still in the bathtub, one arm holding the toilet, the other arm holding the sink and his head tucked down between the side of the cabinet and the floor. He moaned, “I need your help.” Well, obviously.
I threw our bath towels on the floor to soak up the water. The first thing I did was check his head and help him straighten out his neck. Clearly nothing was broken, although the position of his neck had scared me and it was difficult to figure out how to get him up. As he started to maneuver into a safer position, I said, “You were in the shower picking up the bath mat, weren’t you?” “Yes, but…” I continued, “I’m going to save calling you an idiot until we know for certain you’re alright.”
Some months ago, he was talking about how difficult it is to remove the rubber bath mat and rinse it off while he’s still standing in the tub because the tub is slippery. I was dumbfounded. I told him, “I remove it once I’m out of the tub.” I explained that (although admittedly I don’t always rinse off the mat) “I simply reach for the hand-held shower and spray it off.” “Oh, I hadn’t thought of that,” he said. I tried to reason with him, “Do you appreciate how dangerous it is to do it your way?”I assumed (again, a mistake) that he did it my way after that. But, NO!!!
This time, his foot slipped as he was stepping out of the tub. We managed to get him on his feet and he was already laughing (but clearly shaken). I told him I was seriously tempted to smack him. Idiot! “What are you 12?!? Idiot.”
I almost forgot. While I was trying to extract him from the shower curtain and rod, he said, “The water’s still on; turn it off.” That didn’t seem all that important to me and I didn’t see it running, but I turned it off. I then saw that he was holding the spray nozzle in his hand and the bathroom floor was flooding and the bunched-up shower curtain was filled with water. More towels.
We were preparing to go to the garden center. San Geraldo surprised me by taking a Paracetamol and getting dressed to go. So far, he’s only a little sore where he must have hit his chest as he went down. I would already be covered with cuts and bruises. He’s a tough idiot.
The garden center was great. We have little direct sunlight in the apartment, so options for plants are limited. We still managed to load up a taxi with our first round of plants. You’ll see those soon.
Here’s today’s weather advice: “Full sun and extreme heat. Gorgeous sky, unforgiving temperature. Limit your time outside if you can.” I’ll be out for a short walk. Nothing crazy. Topping out around 38˚C/100.4˚F. This is what’s considered the average high here in July, so I will not complain.
Me quedé estupefacta.
Tres hombres en un tonel…” es Rub-a-dub-dub, three men in a tub. (Rub[frota]-a-dub-dub, tres hombres en un baño.)

That’s scary. I’m glad he didn’t break anything and hope he’s not too sore tomorrow.
Kelly:
Thanks so much. He’s been taking a regular dose of Paracetamol and is doing fine. Just a slightly swollen thumb and a sore spot on his left pec. Amazing.
Well, thank goodness San G survived this mishap with nothing broken, just a “little soreness”. As for how this mishap unfolded, you might want to borrow the imaginary frying pan Bob uses on Carlos.
Shirley:
Yes, he’s doing fine. I’m stunned. Yeah, he definitely go the imaginary frying pan.
Glad this mishap had a happy ending. Hopefully SG will do things YOUR way from now on and stay safe!
Debra:
It’s odd to think of MY way as being the safe way!
This is the kind of freaky accident where you thank the universe that you were there and able to rescue SG. Aka Silly Guy. A few minutes could have been serious stuck like that. And we thought you were the accident prone partner! I’m glad he’s okay, but maybe you could backhand his head a time or two.
Boud
Boud:
The next time he tries to lecture me on one of my oops moments, I’ll remind him of this. I’ve never been that careless… Well. Never mind.
First of all, I am ashamed to admit that asked myself “Who’s Mitchell and why is SG moaning his name?” . You will always be Scoot to me now. I’m also glad that only a little soreness was involved in this hilarious escapade. I mean really, two big nekkid men and a tub? Yes my mind went there so sue me.
I’m at the age (slightly younger that you two) where a thud coming from another room is never a good sound. Of course it’s usually me doing the thudding. Anyway, I’m happy you guys are both semi-okay physically and emotionally. Carry on!
Deedles:
I LOVE the nickname Scoot and wish it had started earlier and stuck. Thanks for using it. Imagine SG moaning Scoot! Scoot! Too bad there was no video of this. I told him I was sorry I didn’t grab my camera first thing.
This: “Allow me to begin by saying, I love San Geraldo. He’s smart, funny, handsome, fascinating, and interesting. He can also be an idiot. Don’t worry, I told him directly this morning”: sounds exactly like me beginning a Carlos story!!
Glad SG only bruised his ego and was seriously hurt.
Bob:
I immediately thought of you and how much better you would have expressed it. SG is amazingly well today. He’s tough.
Grab bars!!! You could use grab bars…
Jssw:
There actually is one, but it was behind him when he flew forward. Maybe we need more. And maybe he needs to get out of the tub before removing the mat!
As Bob said, thank heavens he only only bruised his ego. I’ve heard of some daft mishaps, but trying to lift a suckered bathmat while standing on it must be the daftest!
Some lovely shots of the mezquita there. But, of course, it’s the “great plant reveal” I’m waiting for! I do hope at least one of them’s an Aspidistra… Jx
Jon:
Oh, don’t be silly. Before he lifted the bath mat to rinse it, he stepped off it. He was standing in the slippery tub and then tried to step out of the slippery tub. As my friend Wilma said, “Kind of defeats the purpose of the bath mat, doesn’t it?”
Oh my gosh Mitchell! I am so glad that SG is okay. Just reading your post gave me a fright.
Michael:
He gave us both quite a scare. (Idiot.)
Thanks heavens he is alright. It take just one fast and stupid move to do some serious damage….the last thing you guys need.
Loved the cathedral pictures!
Mistress Maddie:
Yes, these accidents can be deadly. Jeez!
That last picture–what a debacle! I’m glad San Geraldo is all right.
Kirk:
I wish I could have gotten photos of him in the position I found him. He was tangled in the shower curtain and the rod was poking from under his right arm from the tub into the bathroom.
Oh my! I am glad he’s alright! Falls are not good, especially as we age – we don’t bounce like we used to.
Rade:
I’m amazed at how durable he is. I would have probably broken something.
You know on home-fix-up-shows how they swing a sledge hammer at things during demo? I wanted to do that when I had the tub ripped out of my bathroom and replaced with a shower. That tub tried to kill me, and I wanted to kill it back. My bathroom remodel was done during COVID, and I was on a conference call on demo day, by the time I got off of the call, the tub was in the back of a truck on its way to hell or wherever they go.
David:
I can imagine how you felt. It must have been especially concerning after recovery from back surgery. This tub is even more treacherous than what we’ve had before.
YIKES! Happy SG is OK.
Now to change my bath mat rinse habit! I do what SG does and I can now see the danger of doing it that way / should have listened to Ron!! I will rinse that mat once outside the shower/tub.
Tell SG that I agree with your method, and Ron’s.
Oh, Jim! I can’t believe you do it that way, too. Listen to Ron (and me). Aren’t we always right anyway?
LOL! I guess you are right…..some of the time.
I am, of course, delighted that SG came out OK, but the position you found him in was straight out of sitcom. Pity, but quite understandable, you don’t have a pic. Now that the tumble I took outside the Milan train station is well in the past, I actually regret David didn’t take a picture of it. I think I might have a case of catastroscopia…
wickedhamster:
I would never be forgiven had I stopped to take pictures. And that sucks. Catastroscopia sounds like a thing!
PS” Ain’t married life grand… 😁
wickedhamster:
The grandest!
No mishap falls for me or Marc in the shower/bath so far. I pull up the non-slip mat once I’ve stepped out of the tub (I mean, really, how else to do it) and shake it off but it never occurred to me to rinse it though I do scrub it now and then.
I listened to the bells. I thought they would play a tune or something but it’s just clanging.
ellen abbott:
Yeah, it never dawned on me to remove the bath mat while still in the tub.
Oh, SG! Thank goodness he’s OK. I must admit it would never occur to me to try to pick up a non-stick tub mat while IN the tub. He certainly has a different way of doing things. 🙂
Steve,
Yes, SG’s brain clearly makes different connections. Often for the better.
